Just when you thought movie fans couldn’t get any more excitement, along comes another romantic comedy! Robert Pattinson and Emma Watson’s new movie, The Other Side of Midnight, is arguably the most anticipated comedy of the year. If you’re reading this, you probably already have your own opinion about the movie. But what if you weren’t sure whether to love or hate it?
The film opens with Emma (Watson) waking up on a boat, along with her boyfriend Robert (Pattinson). It soon becomes apparent that something is off – Emma is wearing no-clothes and her hair and makeup are nowhere to be seen. When the two realize that they’re stranded at sea, the tension between them heightens. (What follows is an attempt at spoilers.)
The Surprise Reveal
One of the most intriguing aspects of The Other Side of Midnight is the identity of Robert’s ex-girlfriend. We never find out her name, but we do learn that she visited California on the day of Robert’s birthday and that she owns a dog named Bailey. (Yes, that’s right, Bailey! The boat on which the couple is stranded is named after the dog.)
Bailey actually plays a pretty big role in the film. Right off the bat, she tags along with Emma and Robert on their journey to find their way back to civilization. During one scene, Emma and Robert are driving and Bailey rides shotgun. Robert is a bit of a hothead and doesn’t take too kindly to Bailey’s barking. When he throws her on the floor of the car, she whines as if she’s hurt. To this day, it’s one of the more realistic scenes in which a woman is mistreated by a man.
The Main Characters
Besides the fact that the film is named after the dog, there are a couple of other connections to Gone with the Wind in The Other Side of Midnight. One of the characters is even based on a character from GWTG!
The movie also features other recognizable faces. For example, it’s no secret that Kristen Stewart and Dakota Johnson are brother and sister. Yet, in The Other Side of Midnight, they play sisters. And before you ask, yes, the father in the movie is named Billy. (He even has a similar haircut to Clark Gable.)
One of the best parts about The Other Side of Midnight is how familiar the setting is. For those who have been following the news, you’ll likely have no trouble believing that this story could actually happen. In fact, it’s been reported that the couple’s real-life relationship inspired the movie.
What A Wunderful Performances!
Aside from the fact that the film is based on a true story, The Other Side of Midnight presents an amazing showcase of acting. Especially when compared to previous films, this one feels incredibly realistic and raw. And that’s all due, in part, to the fact that it’s an all-female cast!
While male actors have been known to shine in comedies and drama, it seems that the ladies are dominating in the acting scene these days.
The two main leads, Emma and Robert, are both superb in this film. In particular, Emma displays an array of emotions, from vulnerability to strength. And while it’s hard to pick a favorite performance, it’s hard to ignore Stewart’s portrayal of Zelda Fitzgerald. (The legendary author’s granddaughter played by Stewart.)

If you’re looking for a fun romantic comedy, The Other Side of Midnight is the movie for you. If you’re on the fence about whether or not to see it, I would say go for it! You’ll most likely have a blast.
