While we were all distracted by the shocking news of Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart’s breakup, the charming English Prince was on the move. On February 14th, 2018, Pattinson tweeted that he was dropping his upcoming movie, ‘Good Time,’ which had been filming in Budapest, Hungary. A few days later, the actor shared another tweet with his followers letting them know that he had officially made the decision to drop the film.
It seemed strange that an actor who had been so vocal about the benefits of collaborating with other directors, given the choice to work with one particular person. But as it turns out, this wasn’t the case. Since dropping out of ‘Good Time,’ Pattinson has gone on to work with some of the biggest names in Hollywood, including Tim Burton, who he will be appearing with in ‘Scoop.’
Why Is ‘Good Time’ Being Dropped?
The official reason for dropping ‘Good Time’ wasn’t revealed, but the movie probably won’t ever see the light of day. The filmmakers behind the movie, directed by James Franco, had this to say about why they chose to scrap their project:
“It’s always difficult to see material you’ve invested so much time and effort in being rejected, but in this case, I feel relieved because I believe the film will have a much better chance of being recognized for the talent that it is.”
They’re not wrong. Franco’s debut movie, ‘The Disaster Artist,’ was rejected by more than 20 film festivals around the world before being picked up by A24 for distribution in the United States. The low-budget sci-fi romance landed on several best lists for 2018, including our own Top 10s for Best Sci-Fi/Horror Movies and for Best Independent Films.
The Director’s Cut
No, we aren’t going down that road again. Instead, let’s focus on what will undoubtedly be the final version of ‘Good Time,’ which was initially meant to be presented in an unrated version. The good news is that if you haven’t seen it yet, you now have the chance. The bad news is that it might not be for the reason you think. On June 20th, 2018, a ‘director’s cut’ of ‘Good Time’ will be released. The reason for the cut? Apparently, James Franco felt the need to cut out a lot of the fluff that didn’t amount to much in the first place. While he admits that the original cut of the film was a little over an hour longer than what will be released, Franco notes that it was just “additional character development that wasn’t interesting.”
The longer the film is, the more likely it is to contain material that doesn’t add up to much. This brings us back to what Franco said about ‘The Disaster Artist.’ The longer the film is, the more there is to take out. He’s not wrong.
Pattinson’s Career In Movies
Even before his acting career took off, Robert Pattinson was known for being extremely private and shunning the spotlight. He rarely gives interviews, and when he does, it’s usually a one-off appearance or at the very least, a very terse one. For those of you who were hoping to get more insight into the breakup of his relationship with Kristen Stewart, the 23-year-old’s representative has confirmed that there will not be a reconciliation. Additionally, it seems as if the Twilight actor is focusing more on his art than anything else at the moment. He has already begun work on his next project, a novel adaptation titled ‘Twilight.’
And while we were distracted by all the celebrity drama, Robert Pattinson quietly began work on his next movie, ‘Scoop,’ with Tim Burton. The two collaborated on ‘Frankenstein’ and ‘Planet of the Apes,’ so it should come as no great surprise that they would team up again. But for those of you who were hoping that this would be the reunion of Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, think again. Burton and Pattinson aren’t interested in reviving their old sparkly romance, as they are focused on the present rather than the past.
Robert Pattinson In Concert
While we’re on the topic of music, let’s not forget about one of the most talented songwriters of our time. On May 19th, 2018, James Franco will host a live performance by the English rock band, The Strokes, at his annual “Year of the Dog” party in New York City. It will be the first time that the two have ever performed together on the same stage, and we know that James Franco loves his dogs. What could possibly go wrong?
That’s what you are thinking right now. The answer? Everything. More details about this year’s “Year of the Dog” party:
The annual ‘Year of the Dog’ party, which is named after James Franco’s pet dog, Bailey, is set to take place in New York City on May 19th. Hosted by the actor, the party will feature a performance by the English rock band, The Strokes, whose frontman, Julian, was one of the first artists James Franco worked with back in 2013. In addition to The Strokes, who will be playing at the Gramercy Theatre, guests at the ‘Year of the Dog’ party will be able to catch a performance by the comedian Jim Gaffigan, who will be presenting his standup show at the Theatre at the Ace Hotel. Other guests include the French singer-songwriter, Elle Marchese, the English comedian, Richard Simmons, and the American model, Emily Ratajkowski.
Will ‘Good Time’ Ever Be Released?
While many of us were saddened by the news of ‘Good Time’s’ impending cancellation, the film’s creators aren’t giving up hope. James Franco noted that he has “no idea what will happen with ‘Good Time,’ but I will always be grateful to its remarkable ensemble, who I worked with for more than two years.”
The movie’s co-stars, including Nat Wolff, Pete Dayton, and Selena Gomez, have also expressed hope that ‘Good Time’ will one day be released. Selena Gomez even went as far as to say that she would love to see it. While it would be amazing to see ‘Good Time’ released, it probably doesn’t have much chance of being picked up for distribution now that its director has dropped it. But let’s not forget – this all could change. In the future, perhaps Netflix or another major streaming service could decide that they want to give the movie a try. And if that happens, who knows?
The Future Of Robert Pattinson
If you want the truth, it’s probably best to just come right out and say it. Robert Pattinson will never be seen in an Oscar-nominated role again. That is exactly what his representative, Karen Addison, had to say about the possibility of Robert Pattinson getting an Oscar nomination for ‘Marriage Story.’ The actress also had some harsh words for the Academy.
“It’s a true shame that an award of this nature has been denied to such an amazing actor who has been so unbelievably gracious with his time.”
“He was nominated for an Academy Award for best supporting actor for ‘Cosmopolis,’ which is widely considered to be one of the greatest performances of all time. That is a fact. He has been in so many great films that it is difficult to keep track of them all. But here we are, 20 years later, and ‘Marriage Story’ is the only film that he has ever been nominated for and won an acting award for. It really is an incredible feat.”
It seems like things either went well or they didn’t for Pattinson, but it’s been a while since he has been this excited about a movie. As Addison said, it is an incredible feat that has only been achieved by the English actor in his career. And considering that this is the only Oscar nomination he has received to date, it is clear that ‘Marriage Story’ must have gone quite well to merit this recognition. We can’t wait to see what he does next.
