Robbie Patton, a.k.a. Robert Pattinson, has officially ended his relationship with the Twilight franchise. According to reports, the British actor has called it quits with the vampire craze that overtook the world in 2012. Is this the end for Robert Pattinson as a movie star?

Robert Pattinson’s Decision To End The Twilight Saga

For those of you who have been sleeping under a rock for the past year, you may not know that the Twilight franchise turned 10 this past December. To celebrate this landmark anniversary, a musical celebration named “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse—A Night Of Symphony and Dance” premiered last month in Los Angeles. The movie musical, inspired by Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight saga, is the culmination of a three-year collaboration between Breaking Dawn film director Robert Pattinson and composer Gustavo Santaolalla. The project was the result of a personal letter written by Pattinson to Santaolalla, begging him to compose the score for the Twilight movies. What a surreal and strange turn of events it would be if a modern-day Shakespeare joined forces with a Bach to pen the score for a Michael Bay movie!

The Twilight saga began as an attempt by Meyer to address the issue of adolescent loneliness. When the Boston Globe’s Stephen King gave it a rave review back in 2003, it became an overnight sensation. The following year, when Twilight was picked up for television by the BBC, it became the most downloaded show in Britain within the first few days of its premiere. The movie adapted from the series is still the number one UK box office hit of all time, with over 160 million views on YouTube. For better or worse, the craze for vampire movies never really went away, and it continues to this day.

Has Twilight Over-Legitimized Vampirism?

The success of Meyer’s Twilight saga was quickly followed by a wave of vampire movies. Since then, we’ve seen huge franchises like Underworld and Let Me In blossom, as well as countless indie movies and YouTube videos dedicated to the dark matter. This past year, the vampire genre was arguably at its peak, with hit after hit including films like The Nightingale, Let the Right One In, Dracula Untold, and Blade Runner 2049. Even more remarkable is that some of these flicks were indie darlings that managed to pull in millions of dollars at the box office. While we can’t deny that there is still some life in the vampire movie genre, it’s clear that its heyday was a bit of a fluke.

The Downside Of Popularity

As much as we would love to see more Shakespeare-Bach collaborations, the downside to celebrity is that people will always want to talk to you about something. For example, if you’re not prepared for the paparazzi, then they are going to make your life a living hell. Whether you want them there or not, the fact remains that they will follow you wherever you go. The same can be said of other famous people. While we might envy their lives of luxury and anonymity, it comes at a price. The downside to popularity is that people can only wish you so much happiness, but they will never truly believe that you deserve it all.

Perhaps if we had more leaders like Abraham Lincoln, we wouldn’t need to worry about the world coming to an end. Lincoln freed the slaves, abolished slavery, and preserved the union between the United States and Canada. What if there was a president in the 21st century who did all of these things? What if the world was like a much better place because of it? We would certainly vote for him! Imagine that!

Regardless of who you are, if you’ve ever been famous, then you know that life can sometimes feel crazy. You wake up, go to sleep, and just try to enjoy the little things. For example, did you know that it is now illegal to graffiti in New York City? Or that there’s a special police force tasked with tracking down all the famous faces that graffiti artists tag along with? If you want to keep your privacy, then you shouldn’t speak with strangers on the phone or attend events where you’ll be recognized. Unfortunately, being famous sometimes means that you have no choice but to interact with fans and make public appearances. This is where the fun (and the trouble) begins.

What Will Become Of The Twilight Franchise?

As much as we would love to see more of Robert Pattinson’s letters to Santaolalla begging for a Twilight score, it’s unlikely that we’ll ever see anything beyond the two previously released soundtracks. When news about the sudden split between Pattinson and Meyer broke, fans were understandably bummed. Since then, the two have kept their distance from one another and refused to speak with the press. We can speculate, however, about what will become of the Twilight franchise. Much like the vampire movie genre itself, there is no clear indication as to whether or not the series will continue. If anything, the situation is reminiscent of the fate of the hugely successful Harry Potter franchise, which went on to inspire numerous spin-offs and a theme park ride. We’ll just have to wait and see what unfolds.

Where Does This Leave The Actor?

Throughout his career, Robert Pattinson has always managed to maintain a certain level of privacy. Despite his immense popularity, he has always shied away from the limelight and refused to promote himself or his projects in any way. This is undoubtedly one of the main reasons why he was able to remain relatively untainted by the Twilight craze. With news that the actor has called it quits with the vampire genre, it’s fair to wonder what this means for his future. Has this finally convinced Pattinson that he can’t always remain incognito? Does he want the celebrity that comes with being a famous film star?

For many years, fans have been asking if Robsten will ever get back together, or at least share a romantic meal with his adoring public. We can only hope that this wish comes true, but until then, we have no choice but to patiently wait and see what future movies the actor chooses to bring to the big or small screen.
