ROBERT PATTINSON will play a leading role in the highly-anticipated The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, which is currently in production. This is the first entry in The Hobbit trilogy, following the highly-acclaimed and award-winning The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again. The Desolation of Smaug has been described as “the most ambitious project [Peter Jackson] has undertaken to date, both in terms of scale and the sheer number of characters,” and will be the culmination of three years of hard work for Jackson and his team.

Described as a “fierce individualist” by Vanity Fair, Pattinson will play the role of the fearsome warrior, Turulf, King of the Mountain Giants. One of the first characters we encounter in the film is Turulf, who is sitting on a throne of skulls, surrounded by his dead wives, and boasting about how he has massacred countless warriors in battle. Turulf is a major character in the film, and has a significant role to play in the conflict which engulfs the story.

In the interest of fans of the novel, we have reproduced the character description for Turulf below. We have also included some information about the making of the film.

MOVING TOWARDS A HUGE SCALE

MOVING TOWARDS A HUGE SCALE

It is fair to say that The Desolation of Smaug will be unlike any of Peter Jackson’s previous films. Not only does it boast an all-time high number of characters, but it also covers a sprawling story, spanning several chapters. This is made possible through the use of Peter Jackson’s latest technological marvel: IMAX® 3D.

The special effects, sets, and costumes in The Desolation of Smaug will be among the most extravagant ever seen in a movie theatre. Although the scale of the production is unprecedented, as soon as you step onto the set you will feel as though you have been teleported to another world.

The design team, led by Peter Jackson, have said that getting these large sets to look real is a major undertaking. The sets for the Hobbiton town, in fact, are so large that they could be used as a real-life video game.

While the production value is incredible, the story itself is what truly makes The Desolation of Smaug stand out. As well as featuring some classic Beebo the Bear, we are introduced to a host of new characters who play crucial roles in the story. It is fair to say that Jackson and his team are not afraid to tackle some of the most difficult moral questions which have ever been posed in a movie. This is what really sets the production apart from previous films – and it is central to the conflict which engulfs the entire story.

The screenplay for The Desolation of Smaug has been written by Franck Aguero and Philippa Boyens. The movie will be directed by Peter Jackson, and distributed by Warner Brothers Studios.
