The latest cinematic hero to grace the big screen is Robert Pattinson (REVIEW). Pattinson had long been a fan favourite for his role in the Twilight franchise (formerly known as the ‘Twilight Saga’ or ‘Vampire Saga’), but now that he has achieved a degree of mainstream success, he is stepping out of his comfort zone to take on a host of diverse projects.
The actor’s extensive filmography includes music videos, commercials, and even a children’s TV series. He is also set to star in the highly anticipated second season of the Netflix series, The Crown (formerly titled ‘The Mystery Murders’ in Europe).
New Face of Romance
Pattinson’s latest film, The Damsel in Distress, marks his second theatrical appearance in the lead role following last year’s box-office hit, Baby Driver. The film was shot back-to-back with Baby Driver with cameras rolling all day, every day, and although it received mixed reviews from critics, audiences have clearly taken a liking to Pattinson’s chiseled features and elegant screen presence. The 32-year-old Englishman’s charm and sex appeal, in particular, have lit a romantic flame inside many a female heart. So much so, that the actor’s name has become a household word among women around the world. In 2018, GAP’s study into the most popular names of the year found that “Robert” was the most popular boys’ name and “Lily” was the most popular girls’ name globally.
Action-adventure Thriller
Pattinson’s performance as a former race car driver named Rick Deckard in Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049 (DIRECTORS’ TALK) was met with widespread critical acclaim and became one of the highest-grossing films of the year. The series of films inspired by the legendary 1982 game, Blade Runner, continue with Blade Runner 2070 (out now) and Blade Runner Mystery (2020), both of which feature Pattinson. The actor will also reprise his role in the upcoming Blade Runner Black Out 2022, a spin-off prequel to Villeneuve’s epic. Villeneuve stated that he wants to continue making films about the blade runner and Rick Deckard, and plans to write and direct a standalone sequel to Blade Runner 2049 in about ten years. When asked about a possible third installment, he said “I would love to do more about the blade runner. I have ideas for that. So, hopefully, we will make some good movies together.”
Dark Horse
Pattinson did not start out as a heart-throb. Following his brief stint in acting, he dived head-first into DJing, producing, and songwriting, and became a regular member of the British electronic music scene. He released his debut solo album in 2007 and collaborated with artists such as Richard Norris (musician), Emeli Niosi, and A.K. (musician). He also featured on the platinum-certified album, “Return of the Mack” by Dizzee Rascal and M.I.A., as well as providing vocals for their song, “Paper Planes.”
A Royal Engagement
Pattinson took a rare break from music to film in 2014, when he was recruited to be the lead actor in the historical comedy-drama, The Lost City. Directed by James Watkins and starring opposite Rachael McAdams and John Boyega, the film follows an idealistic Englishman who travels to India to work for the prince. Despite the film not being released in theaters until later that year, it went on to become one of the biggest global hits of 2014. It was followed by more cinematic adventures, including the 2015 spy thriller, The Accountant, which grossed over $100 million worldwide, and the period piece, The King, based on the life of legendary guitarist, Rory Gallagher. It is currently being reported that Watkins is working on a film adaptation of Stephen King’s 1922 novella, ‘The Outsider’.
Steady Job
Pattinson is committed to remaining fresh in his film roles, and remains an active member of the British film industry. The actor is a proud supporter of Amnesty International and is a vocal advocate for the humane treatment of animals, having co-founded the Dawn Project, a global charity dedicated to supporting wildlife and protecting nature’s creatures. He has also participated in numerous fundraising events and supported multiple charities, including animal welfare groups and the Democratic Unionist Party in Northern Ireland. Pattinson is a devout Roman Catholic and has said that he wants to bring the message of love and tolerance to Hollywood.
