Actress and fashion icon Kristen Stewart was recently named one of the most influential people of 2016. The “Jealous” actress, along with other famous names such as Beyoncé, shared the same sentiment regarding the role these individuals and brands played in changing the face of fashion over the past year. Stewart’s comments came as no surprise considering she has played a significant role in defining the evolving style of Hollywood’s elite for the past couple of decades. Since the start of her acting career in the ‘90s, Stewart has become the go-to person for stylish females looking to emulate a famous Hollywood star.

From Clotheshorse to Style Icon

Stewart initially worked as a personal stylist before transitioning to acting, and she made it a point to establish her own fashion house, KStewart Stewart, in 2015. The venture is the culmination of everything Stewart has learned over the course of her professional career, and she is determined to make each fashion house creation a unique piece of art that she can be proud to sport.

The fashion house will release its first collection of hats later this year, and we are excited to learn more about the unique projects Stewart has in the works. For now, let’s take a look back at her amazing fashion journey, shall we?

A Diamond in the RARF

Kristen Stewart was born and raised in Marrakech, Morocco, which served as an important part of her growing up. She moved to London for acting school and immediately took charge of defining her own style, which she terms “modern nomad chic.”

The English actress wore a striking combination of diamond studs and a gold watch as a form of self-expression during her 2014 Golden Globes appearance. The look was completely unexpected for someone usually associated with a beautiful and flawless white dress, and it firmly placed Stewart on the style map.

That same year, Stewart made headlines for her role in the horror film “Jem and the Hussy,” which earned her a Razzie Award for Worst Actress. She also starred in the movie adaptation of the memoir “Girl On the Loose,” which was released that year as well. It marked the start of an extended period of personal struggle that resulted in Stewart taking a break from the public eye.

The Comeback Kid

Stewart returned to the big screen in 2017 with a performance in the dark romance “Certain Women,” which was a critical and commercial hit. Although she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress, Stewart’s performance was largely overshadowed by that of her co-star, Woody Allen.

Stewart next appeared in the family drama “A Dog’s Purpose,” based on the bestselling novel of the same name. Her character, April, is a free-spirited artist who encourages a stray dog to follow her to Los Angeles, where she hopes to start a new life. The dog, Bentley, acts as a bit of a companion to Stewart’s character throughout the movie – and arguably, the entire series. Despite the film’s poor critical reception, it became a commercial success, grossing over $400 million worldwide.

Style ICON

It was recently revealed that Stewart will be making a special guest appearance at the Met Gala this year in New York City. The actress will be attending the gala as a style icon, and she will be wearing a custom-made hat designed by French luxury goods brand, Saint Laurent. The designers took their inspiration for the creation from French actress Brigitte Bardot, whose “coquette” style has been described as “the marriage of Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe.”

Bardot’s unique mixture of high fashion and low provocation made her a style icon almost from the moment her acting career began. Her style was so distinctive that it became the inspiration for a fashion house devoted to her — Saint Laurent.

The designer Yves Saint Laurent once said of Bardot, “I admire her way of life and her strength of character. She is a true original.” Similarly, Saint Laurent has described Stewart as a “style icon” for her unique combination of glamour and outspokenness, and the designer has chosen to celebrate this by creating a custom hat for her. The timing of the tribute is apt: Bardot passed away in July 2016, and Stewart was spotted wearing the hat at the Met Gala in October.

Branding and Influencers

The fashion industry has undergone a profound change in recent years, with traditional retailers struggling to keep up with the latest trends while also serving large, established customer bases. As a result, a number of high-profile fashion figures have stepped down from their platforms to develop a more personal connection with consumers, creating a space for up-and-coming designers to shine.

The influencer and style influencer world is a completely different animal — and one that is evolving alongside the rapid rise of content creators and creators who have risen through the ranks purely on social media platforms.

Influencers are people who have developed a large audience of followers on platforms like Instagram and YouTube, typically by posting frequent and engaging content related to fashion or style. Influencers work with brands to promote their products and often receive commissions based on the amount of business they bring in – sometimes in excess of 10% of the sale.

Stewart’s fashion house, KStewart Stewart, is part of a new breed of influencer-owned brands. Influencers can provide a platform for brands to reach a market that more traditional retailers may struggle to reach. Additionally, the fashion industry is more than ever before aligned with social media platforms, with consumers researching fashion trends on their phones and sharing their finds on social media platforms. Influencers are clearly playing a role not just as brand ambassadors but as digital style advisors and trendsetters.

A Diamond in the RARF II

“Fashion is always evolving. It is designed to look different every two weeks, so why should we be bound by what is fashionable today? The only constant is change, and that is what makes fashion so fascinating,” Stewart said in an interview with Elle UK.

The evolution of fashion is certainly a topic that we could delve into for hours. From practical jokes related to the fashion industry – like this article – to completely new ways of looking at the world of style and fashion, there is certainly plenty to talk about.
