These days, Hollywood’s royalty are doing their part to help the world become more digital. With so much of our world changing due to the pandemic, it’s not only the celebs who’ve had to adapt, it’s the entire film and TV industry.
Most recently, we’ve seen some truly wonderful performances from actors who normally play supporting roles. Think about it – without the TV show The King, we may not know who BFFs Elle and Desi are, or that Queen Anne is even royalty. Thanks to the movie’s innovative ending, we were able to realize how much these women meant to us, long after the last episode aired.
While we’re still finding our way back to work, it’s time for Hollywood’s biggest power couple – Robert Pattinson and Kate Winslet – to give us another glimpse into how they work together. As fans of both stars know, their on-screen chemistry is nothing short of extraordinary, and it appears their off-screen relationship is just as passionate. If you’re unfamiliar, the gorgeous British actor, rapper, and fashion designer, originally from Nottingham, now lives in Los Angeles. His notable film credits include the Twilight franchise, Water for Elephants, and The Great Gatsby. He currently stars in the Netflix series The King, which follows the dual life of a charming yet manipulative bachelor, Robert Pattinson. It’s been a while since we’ve seen him in a movie, but rest assured, he’s still very much interested in acting. He also has several music projects in the works.
What Is The Difference Between The King And The Great Gatsby?
While The King is an ambitious project from Netflix, set in 16th century England, the titular character of The Great Gatsby is a modern-day man who lives in modern-day America. However, the movie does touch on some of the historical events that took place during this time period, making it a bit more realistic. For instance, we see a glimpse of the Black Plague, which killed a large portion of Europe during this time. It was also during this time that the Protestant Reformation started, which led to a spiritual revival and many changes within the Church. One of the biggest changes was the growth of individualism and the break down of the medieval system of feudalism. It is no surprise, then, that The Great Gatsby reflects this time in history, as America was in the midst of a technological revolution, and many people were looking for ways to change the world for the better. Perhaps one of the most significant transformations during this time period was the advent of technology, which led to a cultural shift and, ultimately, the modern-day world we live in today.
The King’s Ambition
This year has been incredible so far for The King, with two full-length, feature-length films and a number of stand-alone vignettes that bring the entire story to life. With each new season, we get to learn more about the ambitious and ruthless Robert Pattinson, whose drive for status and power knows no bounds. From the very beginning, we’re treated to an elaborate and well-developed backstory, which provides the viewer with a greater understanding of the character. This is one of the things that makes The King so special, as it allows the viewer to invest in these characters and genuinely feel for them, even when they’re behaving in a questionable manner. Much like The Twilight Saga movies, the standalone episodes in season one provide a greater understanding of who these people are and the world they inhabit. It might not be what you’d call “realistic,” but then again, this is Hollywood we’re talking about, and everything is realistic, except for the incredible amounts of money these people throw around.
The King: Versions And Spin-offs
It seems that every few years, Hollywood reevaluates how they do things, discarding old forms and experimenting with new ones. Case in point: The King. Netflix doesn’t usually branch out much beyond the standard assortment of Netflix movies, but the success of The King, coupled with other awards shows like the MTV Movie Awards, have inspired them to take a chance on something different. As a result, we’ve seen several different takes on The King, ranging from a comic book to a mobile game. Here’s a list of some of the various forms of The King that you may or may not have heard of.
- The Graphic Novel – Based on the hit Netflix show, this is the standard, written form of The King. It was originally released in 2012 and follows the dual life of King Henry VIII, who ruled England during the early 16th century. It was written by Mike Mitchell and illustrated by Greg Capullo. Available on iVerse and ComiXology. (Screenshot)
- The Mini-Series – Similar to the comic book version, this is a shorter, limited run series that incorporates both the written word and visual media to tell a story. It’s based on the same character, but from a different time period, and was written by Peter Morgan and directed by Michael Offer for the BBC. Five episodes were released between 2014 and 2018.
- The Broadway Musical – Based on the Oscar-winning screenwriter’s incredible debut novel, The Great Gatsby, which was published 75 years ago, this summer will see the release of the very first Broadway musical based on a Todd Haynes film. Directed by Michael Mayer and featuring a score by Justin Paul, the musical will premiere at the Lyric Theatre in June.
- The Film – Finally, we have the standard version of The King, which is what you’ll probably have seen, whether on Netflix or another streaming platform. It was directed by Todd Haynes and premiered in theaters in October 2019. The film is set for a worldwide release on December 11th.
Who Is The Real King?
Let’s be honest, The King is no ordinary show. From the very beginning, we’re introduced to an ambitious man who craves power, popularity, and financial security. That man is Robert Pattinson. Not only is he the star of one of the most popular shows on Netflix, but he’s also the proud owner of a large estate, which he uses to host lavish parties. When he’s not busy seeking adulation, he’s busy caring for his dogs or exploring the Northern Lights with his glamorous partner, Kate Winslet. She’s an internationally renowned actress who’s acted in several of the most iconic films of all time, including Gandhi and Titanic. She holds the record for most awards won by an actress (9 awards). Together, they’re one of the most iconic celebrity couples in Hollywood history. Despite their wealth, fame, and good looks, this celebrity couple is surprisingly down to earth and grounded. For example, after earning millions on-screen as American dream girls, Winslet and Pattinson recently bought a $3.85 million dollar mansion in Los Angeles, which they promptly renovated.
When Is The Great Gatsby Coming To Theaters?
While we await the December 11th theatrical release of The King, let’s take a trip back in time to the summer of 2019, where we find ourselves in the midst of the blockbuster season. That’s right – it’s now possible to see some of Hollywood’s biggest releases in theaters, as well as on demand. It wasn’t that long ago that we were all lamenting the lack of cinematic experiences in the era of Netflix and Hulu. Well, thank goodness those streaming services exist. However, despite the popularity of these platforms, there’s still something unique about seeing a movie on the big screen. It’s not only about feeling the presence of other moviegoers around you, but about being able to truly enjoy the film, without having to worry about your phone battery dying, or the pixels on the screen becoming unreadable. For that reason, we’ve compiled a list of some of the biggest films coming to theaters this summer and their release dates. Be sure to bookmark this page, as we’ll be updating it with the latest information on the 2020 release schedule. Enjoy!
