If you’re a fan of the Twilight franchise, then the news that the highly anticipated films’ composer, Robert Pattinson, is set to release an original soundtrack may come as a total shock. After all, the former teen heartthrob is most famous for his work on the film series, which peaked with his iconic song, “Let Me Love You.” The films’ iconic theme music remains one of the most recognizable and popular themes in existence and has been covered by some of the biggest names in music, including Maroon 5, Taylor Swift, and more.
The news comes as a bit of a surprise considering that, up until this point, the composer’s only releases had been cover songs. He previously worked with artists including Katy Perry and Demi Lavazza on tracks for her albums, Witness and Red, White & Blue, and had also contributed to Miley Cyrus’ Bangerz album. So, if you’re a fan of the film series, you no doubt already know Robert Pattinson’s music and have a strong feeling as to what it is associated with.
If you’re unfamiliar, the films feature superstar vampire couple, Bella (played by Kristen Stewart) and Edward Cullen (Pattinson). The young couple and their children live a happy and normal life until Bella discovers that she’s pregnant with twins. The discovery breaks up the family and sends them on a quest to find human happiness. While the soundtrack mainly features some new material by Pattinson, there are also a few notable exceptions including Maroon 5’s interpretation of “Let Me Love You.”
Why Is This Important?
This is important because it’s the first new music in the Twilight saga in over a decade. For new fans and people who’ve been following the saga for a long time, it’s an opportunity to indulge in some nostalgic feelings, as well as provide a soundtrack for an already iconic scene from the series.
What’s more is that, in 2019, the Twilight films received a 10-episode season-two renewal from Netflix. We can therefore expect to see more of Robert Pattinson’s music in the near future.
What Does It Mean To Be Reluctant?
If you’re a fan of the series, you’ll no doubt be well aware of the cinematic relationship between Edward Cullen and Bella Swan. For those who haven’t seen the films, let us briefly introduce you to the irresistible charm of the blond vamp and his unquenchable thirst for blood. Edward is a vampire who lives as a civilized creature and prefers to stay away from humans. However, his distaste for the flesh-eating habit is outweighed by his desire to protect his “beloved” Bella.
Bella, on the other hand, is a human who can’t seem to stay away from vampires and finds their blood to be extremely delicious. Edward finds himself compelled to protect her from harm and, in turn, grants her his blood to sustain her life. Despite their differences, Edward and Bella eventually fall in love and, for the most part of the series, lead a relatively normal life together. They even manage to conceive a child, a daughter named Renesmee, played by Emma Wachowski.
However, things aren’t so perfect. As the films progress, we learn that both Edward and Bella have secrets that they’re keeping from each other. In fact, the more that we learn about their pasts, the more that we realize just how little normal their life together is. For example, it’s revealed that neither of them were actually born in perfect health. As a result, they each have an organic half-brother or sister that they never knew about. These half siblings are also part of the reason why Edward is so reluctant to give Bella his blood. He doesn’t want to contaminate their family and accidentally cause them to be born with vampirism. In order to protect his daughter from being turned into a vampire, Edward takes her onto an island where he can keep an eye on her. He hasn’t fed her for seven years and, as a result, she’s become quite weak. Because vampires cannot be turned away from their meal, the only way that Edward can protect his daughter from being bitten is to keep her away from other vampires. This means that he can’t exactly socialize her into the ways of his society and, for the most part, keeps her sheltered. As a result, it’s no wonder that this is the most reluctant scene that Edward has ever filmed. Even after seven years, he still hasn’t lost his fear of hurting or killing another human. This is the theme that runs through the entire series and gives it its unique atmosphere.
However, this is all just speculation. It’s highly unlikely that any of this will happen in the upcoming films. Nevertheless, considering all of the above, it would be a massive shame to not at least listen to what Robert Pattinson has to say. Luckily, we still have the video game to look forward to. At least we have each other.
