The Most Influential Culture Club Member Of All Time

One of the most anticipated films of 2014 is going to be an all-time classic. Can you guess which one?

The answer is neither of the big-budget blockbuster franchises that you might expect. Instead, it’s the cult British comedy-drama series, EMMERGEASS!

If you’ve never heard of it, that’s probably because it only ever aired on the channel once, in July 1993. But that hasn’t stopped it becoming an instant classic amongst fans. It was a Channel 4 show — loved by viewers and critics alike — that explored the rise and fall of a contemporary music scene in Glasgow. The show’s creator, Mike Carlton, had this to say about the critical and commercial reception of EMMERGEASS!

“I didn’t expect it to be nearly as popular as it has been. We never put out press clippings for Emmermargeass, because we didn’t want people to know about it. But it turned out to be one of the most influential shows of all time in terms of breaking new talent. It shaped my career…”

Carlton was being facetious. He wasn’t expecting EMMERGEASS! to have any real impact on his career. But it did. Before the show, he’d written for various British TV shows, including the legendary THE TRUICKLETS, and had worked as a music journalist for a number of publications, including HITZ TV. And he was certainly one of the most influential members of the club. Alongside Carlton, the channel picked up four other series from the club: THE WORST, FRESH ENGAGEMENTS, CHASING CLASSIC NAMES and LAST OF THE SUMMER CAMP!

The channel also aired BEETHOVEN: THE COMPLETE WORKS, which stars Michael Nyqvist and premiered in 2014. Nyqvist’s portrayal of Ludwig van Beethoven was praised for its “meticulous historical research and utter charisma” by the New York Times. The film is now available on DVD!

The Making Of…

Let’s be honest, if you’re reading this page, you’re probably a bit of a movie buff. So it’s probably no surprise that you’re looking forward to seeing how the makers of The Breaking Dawn — the final installment of the Twilight saga — brought the epic adventure to life. (We know how much you loved Eclipse!)

Here’s an exclusive interview with the film’s director, Bill Pope, who takes us on a behind-the-scenes tour of the making of…

The Crew

The director of The Breaking Dawn is Bill Pope. He previously directed the 2013 movie RED, starring Katy Perry and Robert Pattinson. A self-confessed “huge” Katy Perry fan, Pope decided to make the singer’s favorite movie while on the road filming RED. He explained to Metro that he wanted to make sure her fans got to see her in a romantic comedy: “This is basically a dating comedy which is based on a novel written by Stephenie Meyer. It’s got a little bit of a ‘Twilight’ feel to it.”

Pope has also worked as a cinematographer and editor on a number of films, including BASEBALL FRIES and the Oscar-nominated short film CLOVERFIELD PARK. But he is best known for his work with director Ang Lee on the two-time Academy Award-winning film, COCO CHANEL. He was the camera operator and assistant film editor for the film. Here’s what Lee had to say about working with Pope:

“Working with Bill Pope was a real treat. He’s a brilliant, creative guy with a great eye for cinematography. I’ve worked with many great DP’s (director of photography) in my time, but Bill is top notch.”

Pope has also worked with the Coen brothers on several of their movies, including MILLIONAIRE and FLEMINGTON. But perhaps his most well-known collaboration is with Ang Lee on the two-time Academy Award-winning film, COCO CHANEL.

The Sets

The sets for The Breaking Dawn are, to put it lightly, spectacular. If you’ve never been to a movie set, then this is your chance to see what all the fuss is about. (Don’t forget your camera — no selfies allowed!)

We’ll start with the inside of the Volturi castle. Think of the most iconic castles in horror movies and you’ll start to get an idea of how the set of the Volturi castle will look. Here’s a little taste:

“The inside of the Volturi Castle is quite frightening. There are so many twisted little passages and corners, as well as a few hideaways that are perfect for chilling out in. It’s made up of these amazingly designed rooms that are basically works of art, and it’s been built with such meticulous care and attention to detail that it really does feel like a fair is some kind of dream.” (Pope)

The outside of the castle — which is where the fun begins — is just as impressive. Here’s a little taste:

“The sets for the outside are just gorgeous and they really capture the imagination of anyone who sees them. I also loved how they incorporated so much of the surrounding woodland in order to create a more realistic atmosphere.” (Pope)

And just like that, you’re transported away to a far-off, European land, where the sun never sets and the drinks are always cold. Yes, please!

The production designers of the film went above and beyond to create a world that feels as real as possible. They even designed a cocktail that was served to us, complete with olives that rattled as they were crushed by a bartender’s elbow as he mixed them into a martini! It was so real that we were even a little bit afraid to try it. (I’ll leave you to guess which beverage the designer chose to represent this fantastical cocktail!)

The Costumes

The costumes for the movie are another cause for celebration. They’re another stunning piece of Ang Lee’s artistry. And they are so unbelievably complex and detailed that it’s a wonder they all fit the cast. (It’s been decades since anyone dared to defy Mother Nature like this!)

Here’s a little taste:

“I would say the costumes are one of the highlights of the movie. It’s quite an amazing collection and they are all unique and memorable in their own way. Costume design is one of my favorite aspects of the movie.” (Pope)

The designers must have spent countless hours creating these costumes. And, as a result, they’re probably the part of the movie that the audience will remember the most. It’s safe to say that you’ll want to see this collection again and again just to admire it from every angle.

The Scenes That Hollywood Couldn’t Make

The scenes that Hollywood couldn’t make are, quite simply, spectacular. There are so many breathtaking shots in this movie that it’s a wonder it all fits into one cohesive narrative. If you’ve never experienced the feeling of a hand gently running up your waist as you sit on a bed, then this is your chance to live that moment. Here’s a little taste:
