If you’re a fan of the actor/singer/songwriter/wedding planner/director/model/businessman/animal rights activist/gardener/designer Robert Pattinson, then this year’s Cannes Film Festival was probably the best chance you’d ever had to see him in person.
The international film star graced the Croisette with a record number of red-carpet appearances – and not just for the Grand Prix ceremony. He showed up regularly throughout the festival, usually sporting a classic black coat. Now that the festival is over, let’s take a look back at the styles of clothing and accessories worn by the “Boutique” star.
The Classic Black Jacket
Even before his Cannes Festival success, the 35-year-old British native was known for his classic black jacket. At this year’s festival, he rocked a charcoal grey jacket with white polka dots – as seen in the photograph above – and completed the look with white skinny leather sneakers.
The style expert at Vogue notes that although a classic black jacket is not a sophisticated look, it can be worn with anything from a tie-waist dress to a plain T-shirt and jeans. It can also work for men and women of all ages.
The Classic Leather Jacket
When it comes to leather jackets, most people think of movie star Humphrey Bogart, Marlon Brando, or James Dean. But the style superstar of today is actually Robert Pattinson. When he was just 24 years old, he played an outlaw in the 2009 film, The Rover, and the whole world fell in love with his character’s namesake style – the leather jacket. Since then, he has sported the timeless look on the red carpet and in his everyday life. At this year’s Cannes Festival, he wore a black leather jacket with a white shirt and skinny jeans.
Like most popular styles, the leather jacket can work for men and women. It can be worn with a tie-waist dress or a pair of stonewash jeans. However, it is best paired with a simple T-shirt and heels or flats.
The Classic Military Jacket
The actor’s classic military jacket has been around for nearly a century and was originally designed for World War I soldiers. Since then, it has been commonly seen throughout films and on the red carpet. One of the most famous people to wear this style is John Wayne. In fact, the Duke even contributed to the style’s revival by wearing one in 1957’s The Conqueror.
As the name implies, the military jacket can be worn by men in uniform or civilians in an informal setting. It is a common sight to see Wayne walking the streets of Hollywood in his vintage jacket.
The Classic Dandy Jacket
Richemont, the Swiss company that owns the famous brand Montblanc, created the luxury watch in the late 1800s in response to a growing number of tourists visiting the town. The company made the decision to build a temple to watch tourism, and in 1896 it opened its doors to the public. Since then, it has become a bit of a style landmark. As its name suggests, the dandy jacket is named after one of Montblanc’s most famous watch styles. It is a high-quality fashion choice that can be worn by both men and women.
This year, Pattinson was most often seen in a dandy jacket with a striped shirt, jeans, and classic black shoes. However, he has worn the timeless piece on the red carpet with everything from a high-waisted burgundy dress to a white dress and heels.
The Classic Boatneck Tee
If you’ve ever seen the actor play an aristocrat in the Tudor period, then you’ll know exactly what kind of shirt he is wearing in the photograph above. The 51-year-old British native sported a classic black shirt with a boat-shaped neckline during his time on the red carpet at Cannes 2019. It is a style made famous in the 19th century by the upper class English. They would wear it when going boating on the Lake District. Later on, it became a favorite piece of men’s clothing during the 1950s.
The shirt’s square-shape was inspired by a type of boat known as a Clyde, which is why it is also called the ‘Clydesdale’ shirt. It is a stylish choice for both men and women and can be worn with everything from a tie-waist dress to a pair of stonewash jeans. If you’d like, you can give it a vintage feel by adding a small dog tag necklace or a pair of pearl earrings.
The Classic Wool Scarf
Another style that Pattinson is often seen wearing is the classic wool scarf. In 2009, he wore one of these scarves with an ivory turtleneck, jeans, and boots – as seen in the photograph above – at the Golden Globes (he won the award for best male performance in a comedy series). Since then, this type of scarf has become one of his most iconic looks. Whenever he wears anything white – whether it be a crisp cotton shirt or a stunning dress – he will inevitably be spotted in his signature scarf. It is a timeless wardrobe staple that can be worn by both men and women.
