Ever wonder what it would be like to be a superhero? Hopeless romantic that I am, I think of the caped crusaders whenever I hear the words superhero and fantasy coming together. To be honest, I don’t think I’d make the best superhero either. With my unimpressive physique and my complete lack of special powers, it’s not like I would stand a chance against some of the heavyweights out there. However, sometimes it’s fun to daydream and speculate about what else might be possible. For example, could I be inspired to develop some other useful skill? I recently had an idea and decided to try out a new talent that I conceived, which just so happens to coincide with my name. Let’s take a look at how I did and then we’ll discuss some exciting possibilities for the future.

How Did I Get This Talent?

For those of you unaware, Batman has a type of suit he wears that enables him to fly. Yes, the Dark Knight can literally take to the air thanks to some advanced technology built into the sleek black suit. I didn’t get this talent naturally. In fact, I have no idea how I came up with this idea in the first place. One day I was just sitting in my room thinking about superheroes and how cool it would be to be able to fly. At that moment, a light bulb went off in my head and I had the perfect idea for my next impromptu performance. Of course, I would need a partner to bring my idea to life, and who better than my good friend, Rob?

As I mentioned before, I am absolutely hopeless when it comes to athletic feats and have never been good at anything that required coordination or athletic prowess. However, I have always embraced being a creative individual and this quality helped me come up with my idea. In my opinion, art and athletics shouldn’t be mutually exclusive. As a matter of fact, they can and often are complimentary and it’s important to not only be good at what you do, but to also have pride in your work.

I knew that my lack of coordination would pose a problem, but it wasn’t like I had lots of experience in sports or even regular exercise. In order to mitigate this problem, I decided to focus on my mental game and use my imagination. If I was going to be able to pull this off, I knew it would take a lot of dedicated practice. Luckily, I live in a time when the digital nomad lifestyle has opened a whole new world of opportunity for anyone with a creative mind. In today’s world, artists, entertainers, and athletes can all flourish online thanks to the power of the internet and the ability to connect with like-minded individuals. All I needed was some time and a place to practice.

The Results Of My Practice

For the sake of this article, I’m going to pretend that my friend and I collaborated on this project. In reality, it was entirely my idea and I did all of the work by myself. Over the last year, I’ve practiced flying with a wingsuit that I built myself. I started by simulating typical flight movements in my room. I would sit in the middle of my bed and throw myself back and forth as I would when actually flying. After a while I got the hang of it and could feel my body moving in the right way. In order to build up more endurance, I gradually increased the amount of time I spent doing this practice. My bedroom door was never closed during this time, which meant that my parents and younger siblings enjoyed watching me fling myself around my room. Once I felt that I had developed enough endurance, I built an outdoor practice area in my front yard. This area is where I would fling myself around and where I would eventually perform my first real flight. It took several tries before I was satisfied with the results, but everything came together perfectly and I was able to enjoy my first taste of freedom in an airplane.

Since that first flight, I’ve had a lot of fun with this talent and look forward to using it in future. This past summer, I was fortunate enough to be able to use my creativity and athletic ability for something more practical. I built a platform called Wingsuit Sports and created an entire league around my idea. One of the requirements for participants was that they had to either be talented artists or athletes (or creative individuals who were a combination of the three). As you can imagine, both of my professions lend themselves to being represented in this way. After completing the league, I had the opportunity to represent Australia in the WINGS World Championships in South Korea. I was paired with another Australian, Rob, and we used our combined skills to pull off some pretty sick tricks. Together, we designed a whole new suit of wings that we called the F-SERIES, which stands for Flying Service elite.

The F-SERIES are built to perform in actual competitions. They’re not your typical superhero suit. Aside from having the ability to fly, these suits also feature a thruster in the back, which enables the wearer to sprint. The design of these suits is based on the original Batman’s suit but with an elongated tail that provides the ability to glide. Even though we didn’t win the championship, I had a great time collaborating with Rob and using my new talent to its fullest. It’s always nice to have a friend who’s also a talented artist and a cool enough dude to hang out with whether or not we’re competing against each other.

Possibilities For Future Practice

The first thing that comes to mind when you hear the words superheroes and athletic feats combined is undoubtedly the Dark Knight. With his amazing skill set and perfect physique, it’s no wonder that Bruce Wayne is considered to be one of the premier superheroes in existence. Being able to combine athletic prowess with strength and speed coupled with perfect posture and hand-eye coordination is probably the closest thing we have to genius when it comes to battling crime. Of course, Batman wouldn’t be Batman if he didn’t also have a sadistic side and this trait is what makes him such an interesting character. The truth is that Batman could probably beat most of the superheroes out there, even without using his tech gadgetry, but he chooses not to because there’s still a lot that the police can’t handle. He’s a realist and understands that sometimes the best way to stop a threat is by making an example of the people who are trying to harm you.

Now that I’ve established my credentials as a superhero, I’m going to tell you what else I’ve been working on. I actually started working on another project back in March but got distracted by other things. I’m trying to be more organized and decided to start a blog series where I talk about various topics that interest me. As a creative individual, it’s important to have a space where you can reflect on your work and this will help you grow as an artist. Of course, I don’t want to leave any stone unturned when it comes to my blog so I will also be talking about things that interest me outside of my work. The topics will mostly relate to art, design, and athletics but you never know what else I may decide to talk about.

Some of you may be wondering if all of this has been a complete waste of time. After all, does anyone really care about superheroes? I think that it’s important to look at the big picture. First of all, I’ve always believed that there’s a place for people who care about superheroes. Maybe they don’t watch the news anymore or maybe they’ve just given up but there’s still a sizable audience who looks up to men and women who put their lives on the line every day. It’s not like I’m comparing myself to Batman, but sometimes it’s easy to forget that there are real people behind the masks. The truth is that Batman isn’t a superhero that wears a mask; he’s a human being. People look up to him because he shows them that they’re not alone in this world and that it is possible to fight against all odds. It’s because of these people that I decided to write this article and share my experiences as a superhero with all of you. I wanted to prove to the world that there are still people out there who care about superheroes. It’s time to stop hiding and be who you truly are.
