It’s fair to say that since the beginning of 2012, Robert Pattinson has not had the best of times.
The actor, who was crowned Sexiest Man Alive in 2011, found himself at the center of several controversies in the first half of 2012. Most notably, he was photographed kissing a then-girlfriend, FKA Twigs, in front of several onlookers. This led to speculations that he may have cheated on his fiancee, Alice Braga, with the 28-year-old rapper and producer. In addition to this, Pattinson was photographed leaving a London nightclub with another woman, and although there were no signs of physical altercation, it was noticed that he was limping on a leg. It was later revealed that the actor had injured his ankle while dancing, although he claimed that this was due to an accident caused by a broken beer glass. Finally, Pattinson was named as one of the celebrities whose images may be used without their consent for an upcoming anti-piracy campaign.
If this sounds like a lot of drama to you, that’s because it is. But it all stems from the same place: Twitter. The microblogging website exploded with rumors and stories about the actor, and although the gossip may have been annoying at times, it was also entertaining. It’s always nice to read about celebrity scandals and gossip, especially those involving A-listers. It’s not like we wouldn’t rather read about our own little dramas and scandals in comparison to those of the rich and famous. It’s just that they usually end up being so boring that you quickly turn to another headline to bring you some entertainment. In the case of Robert Pattinson, it’s always interesting to read about what’s been going on in his life because almost every story is something new. It’s hard not to keep track of all the drama that the actor is constantly embroiled in, and it makes for some interesting reading. So let’s explore the most recent developments in this ongoing story.
The White Eyes Controversy
It’s been almost a year since we’ve heard any news related to Robert Pattinson, and what a year it’s been. Aside from the odd leaked photo or two, we haven’t heard much about the actor, and that’s probably for the best. When will he ever learn?
The British actor was in the news when he was spotted grabbing some breakfast with FKA Twigs in London last February. At the time, the pair were in the middle of a publicity tour for Twigs’ sophomore album, I Guess You Sorta Like… The album is named after the street artist Olafur Eliasson’s 2008-09 series of art installation pieces called White-Eyed Monsters. The artist’s sculptures, which became popularized on the internet, feature a monster with goat-like features, yellow eyes, and a big bushy tail. It’s no coincidence that these strange creatures were chosen as the mascot and title of Twigs’ album, as the album’s artwork is almost identical to one of the monster sculptures by Olafur Eliasson. In fact, the two are so similar that it’s hard to imagine they aren’t deliberately linked by the artist.
It wouldn’t be the first time Pattinson was linked to a musician. The Twilight Saga star was briefly engaged to singer Elodie Alfauin back in 2009, and it was during this time that he became romantically involved with Twigs. Alfauin is the singer/songwriter of the band Tiger Lily, and she’s credited with helping to compose some of the album’s songs. While it’s not exactly breaking news that Robert Pattinson is a music fan, it is a bit surprising that he’d be friends with a musician considering his notoriously private nature. That being said, Tiger Lily’s songs have a very soft, dreamy sound that fits perfectly with the R&B-influenced music that Pattinson usually performs. It wouldn’t be a stretch to say that Twigs’ music is very close to that of her friend and collaborator, Emily Warren’s, who produced most of the album.
Let’s back up a bit. It started with a tweet from @OlafurEliasson on February 7th 2012, when he linked to a YouTube video of an interview with the British tabloid, The Sun. In the interview, FKA Twigs talks about her album, saying:
“I wanted to do something different for my second album,” Twigs told The Sun. “It was the first time that I really immersed myself in music completely. So much so that I felt like I needed a break from reality. That’s why I put a pinwheel on my album cover – to remind myself to take a step back every now and then.”
The comment, along with the pinned tweet, drew the attention of many on Twitter. Some started commenting on the pinned tweet, asking about the status of Twigs’ album. In response, @OlafurEliasson tweeted on February 8th 2012:
“No idea, but it’s being mastered and will be out soon!”
Despite this, rumors began to spread that the album had been scrapped. A few days later, on February 11th 2012, an unconfirmed report suggested that Twigs had indeed shelved her second album, and that instead she would focus on her upcoming debut EP, The Dreamer. The same day, Alfauin tweeted that the rumors were false, though she did not specify which album she was talking about.
On February 13th 2012, @OlafurEliasson tweeted again, this time mentioning a letter he had sent to Twigs, which he included as a tweet. In the letter, the artist offered to help produce the singer’s second album, The Dreamer. He also claimed that he had made an investment in Twigs’ record label, and asked for some time to see if the label’s debut release would be worthwhile.
“I would like to officially dispell [sic] the rumors that I’m not going to release my album,” Twigs tweeted soon after. “I’ve decided to push it back to next year, but it will be out this year! Thank you for your love & support.”
This is where it gets interesting. With the album’s release date approaching, speculation began to arise about what was going on behind the scenes with Twigs and her team. Did the singer change her mind and decide to go ahead with the album after all? Was there some sort of issue with the record label? Why the delay?
The answer to all of these questions, at least for now, appears to be no. According to a new report from The Daily Mail, the British singer/songwriter’s second album will in fact be released next year.
The Drunken Brawl
While many were focused on the ongoing controversy surrounding Twigs’ album, a separate story was making the rounds on social media regarding the actor. On January 30th 2012, a video began to circulate on blogs and forums, showing what appeared to be a drunken brawl between Pattinson and a man who was filming the actor outside a London nightclub. It’s not exactly clear what led up to the fight, but according to the onlookers, it started over a spilled drink. The video, which was captured by a witness and posted to YouTube, begins with the two men, who appear to be in their early twenties, laughing and joking together as they wait for a ride. Minutes later, the pair are seen brawling in the street outside the nightclub. At one point during the fight, the two men are seen holding each other by the shirt as they try to wrestle to the ground. After a short period of time, bystanders (who are mostly just laughing at the scene) intervene and separate the men. No injuries are reported in the aftermath of the brawl.
The YouTube video, which has since been viewed over one million times, sparked rumors that the actor had been in a fight, which he denied. He then issued a statement to The Sun, saying that he had been jumped outside the nightclub by men who were trying to steal his girlfriend’s purse. (This is apparently a common occurrence outside fancy London nightclubs. An eyewitness told The Sun that this is usually perpetrated by the so-called “youths” who hang around there, as well as those who come from nearby pubs and walk up to young women they think are attractive.)
In the days following this alleged purse-snatching incident, Pattinson was photographed leaving a London nightclub with another woman. Although there were no signs of physical altercation, it was noticed that he was limping on a leg. It was later revealed that the actor had injured his ankle while dancing, although he claimed that this was due to an accident caused by a broken beer glass. Finally, Pattinson was named as one of the celebrities whose images may be used without their consent for an upcoming anti-piracy campaign.
