I don’t know about you guys, but when I think about Batman, the first thing that comes to mind isn’t the actor who plays him in the movies. Sure, the Dark Knight might make a great figure skating coach or a really good pirate, but who is he when he isn’t wearing the mask? I always think of the comic books I read as a kid, specifically those by DC. I love the dark atmosphere, the noir-ish setting, and of course, the amazing stories.
If you’re a big DC fan, then you’ll definitely want to check out these Halloween costumes. Not only will they make you look like a total badass, but they’ll also let you relive some of DC’s greatest stories and make you feel like a part of the action. Without further ado, let’s take a look at each costume and what makes it so special.
The Joker
Let’s start off with the most famous Halloween costume of all time: the Joker! If I had to pick a favorite Batman costume, it would have to be this one. Why? Well, it’s the evolution of the Joker costume. When they first introduced the character in the mid-20th century, he wore a simple skull mask and a brown overcoat. Naturally, over the years, the costume has evolved to fit the times. It started out simple but over the years, it got more and more elaborate. The inspiration for this particular costume comes from the 1930s newspaper comic strips by Jack Cohen. It wasn’t exactly a coincidence that the Joker was first seen sporting this outfit in the newspaper comics since they were printed around the time that the Great Depression was hitting. Naturally, it wasn’t the most flattering outfit for a grown man, but it definitely made him look more intimidating.
Harley Quinn
Harley Quinn is one of the most prominent villains from the Batman universe, if not THE most prominent. As I mentioned before, when it comes to the Joker, inspiration is always a good thing. The same goes for Harley Quinn. The Harley Quinn costume is based on the infamous harley quinn, the crazy wife of the Joker. Naturally, when they first met, the Joker thought that Harley’s obsession with him was funny, but it also made her a serious threat. Luckily for him, Harley didn’t stand a chance against the combined forces of Batman and the Joker. Since then, he’s kept a low profile and hasn’t shown up in any comic books, with the exception of a couple of one-shots that focused on bad guys teaming up to take down Batman. However, as more and more people are getting into Halloween costumes, it’s about time that Harley made a comeback.
Ironman
Another popular Halloween costume around these parts is Ironman. It stands for “Ironman Fatman,” an alter ego created by Matt Furie. (You can read more about him here.) As his name would suggest, this is the costume of Tony Stark, the billionaire CEO and founder of Stark Industries. Just like the Harley Quinn costume, this one is based on a character from the comics, in this case, Ironman. In the comics, he’s usually shown in armored suits that blend in with the environment, much like the Ironman suit you might be wearing now. The main difference is, in the comics, he’s a much more active guy. He doesn’t just stand around waiting for the bad guys to make their move. He’s constantly fighting or battling something. In the case of the Harley Quinn costume, it’s Batman and the Joker. In the case of the Ironman costume, it’s usually aliens or mutants. Even when he’s not battling monsters and aliens, he’s usually working on some new invention or project that’ll help save the world. Naturally, that also means that his house must be packed with scientists and engineers in order to make all these things.
Booster Gold
Last but not least, we have Booster Gold. Like Ironman, this is another superhero from the 20th century who never went out of style. Booster Gold is usually depicted as a short, overweight guy with a big head and a small body. He’s always seen wearing a cape and hood, like the kind you might see on a superhero. The costume itself is actually pretty simple. It’s just a yellow T-shirt with an S on it and a pair of jeans with stars on them. However, it’s the character’s distinctive facial hair that makes up for the lack of a costume. Naturally, he got his name from “booster” speed, the hero’s super-speed which allows him to travel through time. If you’ve ever seen the Back to the Future movies, then you know exactly who this character is. (You can also see the “booster” speed symbol on his chest.)
