No charges were filed after her claims were deemed “unfounded” by prosecutors. The LAPD classified the incident as a misdemeanor battery, and the two later reached a settlement in which the actor neither admitted nor denied the allegation. However, it didn’t stop there. The following month, a female acquaintance accused Pattinson of sexual assault. The actor swiftly moved to deny the accusation. “I am deeply sorry to hear that she has made this allegation. It is untrue and I bitterly resent having to say that I never met her and consider her claim to be nothing more than a vile rumour,” he said in a statement.
Although the LAPD didn’t find sufficient evidence to disprove the assault claim, it did find enough to label the woman a “vaguely credible” source. Even then, the department closed the investigation without any charges being filed. It was later revealed that the LAPD had no interest in pursuing the case because the alleged victim had violated a restraining order against a previous assault. It was also revealed that the woman had recently obtained a default judgment against her attacker. This isn’t the first time that the LAPD has refused to take a sexual assault allegation against a male celebrity seriously. In 2007, they reportedly closed an investigation into Justin Timberlake after he was accused of sexually assaulting a woman at a London bar. The case was later reopened, but nothing came of it. In 2004, actor Robert Downey Jr. was convicted of misdemeanor battery for sexually assaulting a hotel employee. The verdict was appealed, and the conviction was eventually overturned.
Wedding Plans
While some may find it hard to believe, the year 2017 was also the year that Robert Pattinson found wedded bliss. The actor, who grew up in Newton Abbot, Devon, England, proposed to long-time girlfriend and screenwriter Lauryn Widdell during a sunset ceremony at a Los Angeles hotel. The happy couple made their red carpet debut during the 2017 Met Gala in New York City, where they were greeted by thousands of well-wishers.
They spent the rest of the year traveling the world together as newlyweds.
