For fans of the film, ‘The Rover’ is more than just a vehicle. It’s a chance to get to know the charismatic Robert Pattinson a little better. After all, the film’s main character is driven by his passions – specifically, his unquenchable desire to go fast and play loud music – and we get to see a lot of him through the eyes of his trusted high-school English teacher, played by none other than Kristen Stewart.
The movie is based on real events. In 2012, Pattinson drove his Range Rover over a kilometer on a motorway in Sweden, getting busted only because he wasn’t wearing a helmet. Since then, the actor has made headlines for his outrageous antics on and off screen. But it’s not all about fun and games: In an attempt to shed light on the issue of reckless driving, he’s worked with governmental agencies and non-profit organizations to establish driver safety courses and helmets for children. He also founded his own film production company to give more people an outlet for their creative endeavors.
Pattinson was born in London in 1986. His father, James, is an architect, while his mother, Maria, is an art historian. He has one older sister, Elizabeth, and two younger brothers, Charlie and Max. His parents’ marriage ended years ago, and he lives with his father. One of his favorite activities is going to the movies; he’s described his collection of film memorabilia as “insane.” One of his favorite actors is Gary Oldman, who he’s always impressed by for being able to play so many different characters. He’s a big fan of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series – he even took a spin on the quill with which Harry Potter writes as a peace offering at one point – and loves Nicolas Cage since he first saw him in “Leaving Las Vegas.”
You can catch Robert Pattinson in the new film, “Lost Boys: The Game,” which also features one of his favorite actors, Harvey Keitel. The film, due out this winter, is based on the acclaimed graphic novel of the same name by Mark Henry Richardson. It follows a group of friends who are reunited after years apart, reconnecting with their loved ones and getting back into the swing of things – literally – which leads them to compete in a game that forces them to relive their past tragedies.
The actor recently wrapped shooting on the thriller, “Triple Nine,” in which he plays a high-powered assassin who suffers from hyper-awareness. Based on a true story, the movie explores the dark side of London – where the streets are alive with hustle and bustle, yet also teem with danger – and the lengths to which some people will go in order to get what they want.
From ‘Twilight’ To ‘The Rover’
After breaking up with longtime partner and “Twilight” co-star, Anna Kendrick, in January 2015, Pattinson spent more than a year away from the limelight. In the interim, he did a whole lot of growing. For one, he put on a ton of weight. Then he started an acting career in earnest, landing the role of Scott Howard in the independent film, “Crimson Peak.”
After a few more small parts, he was given the lead role in Andrew Niccol’s “The Rover,” which follows a group of young men who wake one morning to discover their cars are gone. While some assume the thieves must be local boys looking for a quick cash grab, it soon becomes apparent that these are no ordinary cars. To make matters worse, the men start to disappear one by one, and it’s up to Robert Pattinson’s character, Jimmy, to save the day and unravel a sinister conspiracy.
“The Rover” was released in theaters last November, and has done relatively well financially, raking in more than $100 million worldwide, largely due to its high-profile cast, including Tom Hardy, Donald Sutherland, and Mark Wahlberg – whose character is based on the real-life crime boss, Don Johnson.
Speaking with Variety, Wahlberg described “The Rover” as “a brilliant story about fate and coincidence” and added, “It’s about time we started talking about the issue of safety on the road. I’m glad somebody finally made a movie about it.”
The mainstream media coverage of “The Rover” has mostly been positive. One of the more positive reviews came from the New York Times, which said the film “walks the tightrope of being entertaining and educational” and described it as possessing “a rare combination of qualities: arresting visuals, beguiling performances and thought-provoking ideas.”
A Political Activist
Pattinson has also been active in the political sphere, using his celebrity to speak out about important issues. Most notably, he’s been a vocal defender of President Donald Trump, going so far as to create a Twitter account in Trump’s name. The fake Trump has now over 50 million followers, and the two appear to be quite the fan of each other, with Trump even giving Pattinson his ‘genius’ award at the White House in 2017.
The actor also became a patron of the British charity, Mind, supporting their work in mental health and education. In an interview with The Guardian, he said that he hoped his work with Mind would encourage more people to come forward and seek help, adding that mental illness is too often seen as something that only affects certain people – like himself – and not something that can be talked about easily. “We need to break the stigma surrounding mental health,” he said.
A More Family-Friendly Actor
While his new film, ‘Lost Boys: The Game,’ is more of a thriller than an outright comedy – and doesn’t deal with the issue of reckless driving at all – it’s not all bad news for Pattinson. As previously stated, he’s been working hard to make a difference on the issue of driver safety, speaking out about the dangers of distracted driving and establishing himself as an ambassador for the campaign, Driver Focus. In a podcast with Collider, he detailed the steps he’s taking to make sure the road ahead is as safe as possible for other drivers:
“I don’t really want to talk about my politics in interviews, but I will say this: I am an ambassador for the campaign, Driver Focus, and what we’re trying to do is get more people into cars. Most people think that driving is dangerous, but it’s actually dangerous to be a passenger. It’s far more dangerous to be a driver. So, what we’re trying to do with Driver Focus is get people thinking about the fact that they’re passengers and not drivers. Most people don’t think about it because it’s not something that happens very often.”
Pattinson said he wanted to take his own experiences as a driver and apply them to the general public. ‘Lost Boys: The Game’ will hit theaters in the US on February 23rd, and UK theaters on March 16th.
