We’ve been eagerly awaiting the release of the highly anticipated new movie, On The Road, which serves as a fantastic reunion of sorts for Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart. The movie marks the beginning of a new romance for both stars — they started dating in 2009 and were engaged less than a year later. The film also marks the beginning of their career-defining co-starring roles. And, finally, it will showcase their undeniable chemistry on-screen.
But now that the movie is almost here, we can look back at some of the best interviews the two celebrities have given over the years. In this week’s installment, we explore five fabulous (and incredibly revealing) interviews from the past five years.
5 Interviews Worth Revisiting
It’s no secret that Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart are two of Hollywood’s most beloved and in-demand stars. The British actor has become a household name since starring as the rebellious vampire Edward Cullen in the Twilight franchise, and the American actress is renowned for her role as Bella Swan in the blockbuster series. As a result, the pair have amassed a laundry list of A-list credits, including big-screen appearances in The Hobbit, Snow White and the Huntsman, and the upcoming On the Road.
The pair have also had an incredibly visible and public romance. They dated for nearly a year before announcing their engagement in March 2010, and since then the celebrity couple have frequently been spotted celebrating their love in New York City and on vacation with their families. In the years since their engagement, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart have become the toast of the media world — they’ve graced the covers of a number of Vogue and Elle publications and been featured on the covers of numerous magazines. Most notably, they were the faces of Chanel’s 2011 and 2012 ready-to-wear campaigns.
Hotel du Soleil
It seems only fitting that the most iconic image from On The Road is that of the star-crossed lovers. Director Sebastian Lelio’s epic film opens with a breathtaking, sun-soaked shot of the pair as they arrive at a hotel in Acapulco, Mexico. The stunning visuals are the perfect prelude to a rousing romance that will have audiences swooning. The hotel’s name? Hotel des Soles, which translates to the “Hotel of the Sun.”
The Mexican getaway is ostensibly a romantic vacation for the stars, but it’s clear from their playful interactions that their real agenda is to getaway together — and that’s exactly what they want to do when they order room service and linger in bed, discussing their future. “I think we need to have a real talk,” Kristen admits at one point. “I want to be with you forever,” Robert replies. “Me too,” she whispers, before they finally give in to temptation and share a passionate kiss.
New York City
It’s fair to say that the first installment of the On The Road series — and the overall franchise — explores the appeal of New York City. The filmmakers visit iconic landmarks, hang out with famous friends, and indulge in some decadent luxuries. The plot even takes an excursion to the City That Never Sleeps to follow the adventures of the titular character, played by Robert Pattinson. Interspersed between this excursion and the plot of the film itself are cameos by some of New York City’s most recognizable figures. Among those who make cameo appearances are Amy Winehouse, Barbara Hutton, Bill Campbell, and Andy Warhol.
Australia
The second instalment of the On The Road franchise, Australia, focuses on the stars’escapades in the Outback. The setting is beautiful, and so is the scenery. Whether on foot or by vehicle, the camera captures the spirit of the Australian bush and its breathtaking sky. The romantic undertones are also present. One scene in particular stands out — it finds the couple lying in the sand, fully clothed, as a blinding light shines down on them. It’s an intimate moment, one that reveals a lot about their partnership. Just ahead of the film’s international release, we got the chance to speak with the English-born actor and the Canadian-American actress about their favorite places in Australia and the country’s rich cultural heritage. (The film is set to premiere on May 19th.)
Lavender And Bay Trees
The third installment in the On The Road series, Lavender and Bay Trees, finds the couple in the French countryside. They check into an enchanting hotel and meet with a publisher who has intriguing plans for them. It’s not long before they’re sharing a passionate kiss and exploring each other’s bodies. The hotel’s owner even catches them in the act and offers to let them film the illicit act. (The movie premieres in France on June 8th and in the U.S. on June 16th.)
The Future
The fourth installment in the On The Road franchise, The Future, finds the couple in an era that has been described as “Blade Runner-meets-The Wizard of Oz.” The film, once again directed by Sebastian Lelio, opens with a mesmerizing shot of the city — a vibrant mix of steel, neon, and people — as well as an evocative score by Max Richter. We then flash back to a village in New York’s upstate, where a group of scientists are frantically trying to avert a global catastrophe. Their solution? Send the famous stars back in time to set things right.
Whether through genetic engineering or some other science fiction device, the scientists create a time machine and send the lovers of the 20th century back in time to ensure that their romance will be consummated and their world will avoid ruin. It’s a clever premise, one that draws on the magic of Hollywood’s most iconic power couple.
The Future is the first installment in the On The Road series, and it’s one of the most audacious adaptations of all time. It features an all-star cast, including Harrison Ford, Michael Caine, Olivia de Havilland, and Theresa Reichle. The film draws on the couple’s incredible charm and charisma to cast a spell over viewers. Most importantly, it spotlights their undeniable chemistry on-screen. In one scene, the stars play a chess game and it’s clear that they’re completely devoted to each other. It’s a joy to behold — one that makes this already fascinating film even more compelling.
TikTok
As the final installment in the On The Road franchise, TikTok — which stands for “Technology and Internet Search Engine,” — finds the famous lovers in Amsterdam. It’s been a long time since we last saw them, and they’re looking remarkably fresh considering the fact that it’s been so long since the events of the previous films. They check into the Grand Hotel Amrå and make their way to the rooftop pool, where they meet with a producer who has a proposition for them. What is it? To star in a reality show about themselves — specifically, a cooking show.
The premise is certainly unique. We’re not sure quite what the catch is, but we’re intrigued. And, as usual, the stars’ incredible charm and charisma are on full display. What’s so fascinating about this series of interviews is the candor with which the stars speak about their work and their lives. Interspersed between these interviews are appearances by some of cinema’s most recognizable faces — among them, Helen Mirren, Morgan Freeman, and Alan Cumming. This week’s installment also marks the return of Michael Caine, who provides yet another cameo appearance. It’s safe to say that we’ll be seeing a lot more of the legendary actor as the countdown to the much-anticipated On The Road continues…
