It’s been a strange and traumatic year for the couple, whose relationship was at the centre of one of the biggest social media stories of the year. The Scottish actor was initially reluctant to confirm the relationship but eventually did so to much hilarity and publicity. Having previously dated French actress Clémence Poésy, the two were first spotted holding hands while on a coffee date in Paris in March 2017.
They announced their engagement in November and tied the knot in a private ceremony in Venice in the following month. In between the engagement and the wedding, they were constantly in the headlines for all the right reasons – attending glamorous events and looking dashing in their wedding photographs. The following month, the couple celebrated their one-year wedding anniversary with a trip to Bali.
But despite the celebrity and the Instagrammable snaps, 2017 was a tough year for the young couple – and not just because of the highs and lows in their personal life. The year started with heavy rains that damaged their wedding cake and continued throughout the year with flooding and mudslide tragedies in the UK. These tragedies left hundreds of families grieving and forced the government to introduce emergency legislation. The couple’s hometown of London also suffered its worst flooding in a century, causing widespread damage and leaving residents and visitors alike stranded.
In the circumstances, it’s perhaps not surprising that the couple didn’t publicise their relationship too much in 2017. As the year went on, they both appeared to retreat from social media – with Rob rarely posting on Instagram and Kristen deleting her account altogether. The couple went on their first official holiday as a married couple in October and have so far kept a low profile.
There’s a lot to look forward to for the couple in 2018. Not only do they have each other, but they are both also 27, which means they’re technically still young enough to enjoy a long and happy life together. After so much turmoil in 2017, the future looks fairly rosy for Rob and Kristen.
The next step for the newlyweds is to grow their family. Shortly after the ceremony, Kristen tweeted: “I couldn’t find the words to say how happy I am. I love you so much and are so grateful to have found each other.” It seems that the actress is already working on her baby’s first birthday party – something that couldn’t have happened without the couple’s parents’s blessing.
The following month, the Hollywood stars were back in the headlines when they were both awarded MBEs in the Queen’s Birthday Honours. The honour is an indication of how highly the British establishment respects the couple and their work, and Rob’s acceptance speech was met with roars from the audience. It seems that the whole world now loves the couple, and they have once again stolen the show.
With 2018 being a vintage year and the couple celebrating their 27th birthday in the New Year, it seems that it’s a very good time to be Rob and Kristen. As for the year ahead, it will be an interesting couple of years.
