Highlights
It’s been a crazy couple of months. The couple got engaged in Scotland back in January, and while they’ve been busy planning the wedding, the media has been busy speculating. Most outlets seem to think that the relationship fell apart because of Stewart’s infidelity. But that’s not the case at all. Here are a few interesting tidbits about what happened with these two movie stars.
They Spent More Than 300 Hours In The Honeymoon Phase Of Their Relationship
The first sign of trouble in paradise was back in October. That’s when Stewart was filmed with her boyfriend, Tom Hardy, on a luxury vacation to Portugal. The actress was glowing in an elegant black-and-white photo, and later, she would clarify that the couple had indeed spent a romantic night in a villa near the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. But the following day, the reality of what they’d done hit the headlines. While other couples were hitting the town and attending dinner parties, the onetime celebrity sweethearts were reportedly holed up in their beachfront villa, diligently working on their wedding plans. Their wedding was set to take place in Scotland, and they would subsequently honeymoon in Venice and Paris.
A Source Confirmed That Their Engagement Is Artistic Only
One of the first reports of trouble in paradise was a Scotland on Sunday article that cited a “source” as saying, “Their engagement is certainly not going to be a conventional union and certainly not one geared toward ensuring they have offspring.” A week later, another article came out, this time from the U.K.’s The Independent. The source again was quoted, saying, “They are not seeking marriage or looking for breeding stock. They want to create an artistic union that is based on mutual respect and admiration.” Naturally, the media picked up on this quote and ran with it. Some outlets went as far as dubbing the couple the “Sage and the Sensual,” a reference to Stewart’s and Pattinson’s combined acting skill set. Others suggested that their unusual union had something to do with their shared disdain for social media and fame. But, as Pattinson later told Esquire, “I think we just really like each other and want to spend as much time together as possible. It’s always nice when two people feel that way about each other.”
The Actress’ Infidelity Was Much More Complicated
While Stewart’s infidelity seemed to be at the root of the couple’s split, it was actually a lot more complicated than that. Sources close to the actress, who wed in 2015, have said that she felt trapped by her famous status. “She wants to go on a low-key, personal wedding tour, which she feels has been denied to her,” a source told The Independent at the time. “She wants to keep it very intimate and spend lots of time with her new husband.” While some details of their wedding ceremony have been made public, it was actually their private honeymoon that would be the true test of their commitment to each other. And, according to a new report, that’s when everything went wrong.
The Honeymoon Was Cut Short Due To Coronavirus
In early April, as the world was still coming to grips with the pandemic, the newlyweds announced that they would be cutting their trip to Scotland short. The actor told Entertainment Tonight at the time, “We’ve been going over to Scotland for a bit of a holiday and have been looking forward to it for a while now. But, due to the current situation, we’re not going to be able to make it.” He added, “We don’t want to leave L.A. yet, but at the same time, we don’t want to put ourselves or others at risk, so we’re going to have to make the right choice.” The couple canceled the rest of their trip and returned home, where they would eventually settle in L.A.
The Breakup Had Nothing To Do With Sexuality
After the initial reports of infidelity broke, a number of outlets jumped to the conclusion that Stewart’s infidelity caused the breakup. But, as time went on, it became clear that none of that was true. In fact, it had nothing to do with infidelity at all. In a new interview with Entertainment Tonight, Pattinson reiterated that they’d broken up because they just weren’t compatible. “In my opinion, she’s one of the most extraordinary people I’ve ever met,” he said. “It’s just that, as two people, we don’t seem to click.” While Stewart maintained a relatively low profile following the breakup, Pattinson has continued to be vocal about their relationship. “It was an unconventional marriage,” he told Entertainment Tonight. “We just felt that it wasn’t working out and decided to go our separate ways. It was very amicable. And I think that’s what everyone wants in their marriage, is for it to be easy and for the issues to just melt away.” The pair have continued to make appearances together, but it’s been a while since they’ve been photographed publicly. When they are seen together, it’s usually at a private event or on a movie set. But, for the most part, they’ve kept their private life private. Perhaps that’s what led to the inaccurate assumption that their breakup had something to do with Stewart’s infidelity. It wasn’t. It was just that their schedules didn’t match up and they decided it wasn’t working out. That’s all.
These two talented artists have managed to stay relatively under the radar since their breakup. They’ve kept busy working on their solo projects and supporting each other on their acting careers. It’s been almost a year since news of their split first broke and now, it seems, they’re back together and doing exactly what they wanted to do all along.
