Robert Pattinson and Christina Ricci are one of Hollywood’s most iconic celebrity couples. The British actor and the American actress met on the set of the 2001 film The Family Man and were married in a lavish ceremony in Italy in 2002. Since then, they’ve kept a low profile, shunning the paparazzi and preferring to stay at home with their two children.

The two would go on to star in a string of hit films, including The Housekeeper and the Professor (both 2003), Babymakers (2004), Cosmo (2005), and Goodbye Christopher Robin (2007). Their filmography boasts box office hits and critical raves, and they’re regularly named among the world’s most handsome celebrity couples.

Though they’ve largely avoided the limelight since 2007, the pair couldn’t keep their hands off the media. In 2015, they released a quirky autobiography, co-written with Madonna’s former literary lawyer Lisa Maxwell, titled The Untouchables: Surviving Hollywood and Celebrity. The book exposed the close-knit bond the two share and discussed the unique challenges posed by their celebrity.

And it seems their love for each other has not gone undiscovered. The two have constantly been linked to one another since their marriage, with rumours suggesting their split may not be as far off as we think.

Here, we’ll explore the intricacies of their relationship, from first impressions to their individual passions, which help to shape their marriage and their films.

The Two Celebrity Couples

Robert Pattinson and Christina Ricci are not only famous for their amazing looks, but also for their work. The two have proven time and time again that they’re not just sex symbols but talented actors who can bring life to their characters.

While their onscreen partnership was often hailed as “compelling” and “riveting”, off-screen they were rarely seen together. The only hint of their relationship came in the form of paparazzi photos of them holding hands, or enjoying a passionate kiss. In fact, their only public appearance as a couple was at a Halloween party in 2003, when they were both dressed as pirates for a Hollywood.com party. Although the two have gone on to pose for numerous magazines and have been photographed together countless times since, this was the first and only public display of their relationship in more than 10 years. And it was nothing compared to what came next.

An Unexpected Encounter

One night in August 2002, while shooting The Family Man in Ireland, Robert Pattinson walked onto the set of his movie to find his agent. Instead, he came across a young woman working as an extra, who quickly shot him down with a come-on line. “I was so taken aback by how forward she was that I didn’t know what to say. Luckily, she got the joke and we ended up having a laugh,” he said later.

From that point on, the two would regularly meet up for lunch and spend time together after work. They even began exchanging phone numbers, which eventually led to them meeting in person. This unplanned encounter would change their lives forever.

An “Effervescent Personality”

The daughter of a police officer, Christina Ricci grew up in a small town in California. She moved to Los Angeles at the age of 18, and began taking acting classes. A year later, she was cast in her first major role in The Last House on the Left (left as the second unit photographer shooting footage for the feature film). She went on to star in the acclaimed crime thriller The Frozen Ground (2013) and horror movie Hush (2016).

Like Robert, Christina has also had an extensive career in Hollywood, with roles spanning from The Cotton Club (1984) to Hush. She started her acting career in the 1980s, and credits her success to her “effervescent personality” and “wonderful sense of humor.” In an interview with Vogue, she said: “I’ve always been lucky. I never worried about money. I could always pay my bills. Plus, my father was a police officer, so I was always surrounded by men with authority. I feel like I’ve always had a safety net under me. I never felt like I was alone in the world.”

A Born-Again Christian

If there’s one thing we know about Robert Pattinson, it’s that he’s a spiritual person. The openly religious actor has spoken about his faith and the importance it holds in his life. In his 2017 book, The Magician: My Journey to Freedom, he wrote: “Since I was a child, I’ve been fortunate to have known and experienced the joy that comes from being a Christian. Having grown up in the Church, I feel that my work is a form of apologetics, defending the indefensible, especially in a world that, for whatever reason, doesn’t want to acknowledge the existence of God.”

Though he’s never been more than fleetingly religious, as far back as 2004 he was telling interviewers that he considered himself a born-again Christian, and that his faith was a “really big influence” on his life. So much so that when he became a father, he decided to give up his regular acting roles in order to spend more time with his family.

A Love for Design

Robert and Christina’s shared interest in design is what initially drew them together. The couple has incorporated design elements into their homes, most notably the wrought iron gates that feature on their luxurious Los Angeles residence. These gates were first crafted in the early 1800s in Bavaria and feature “a timeless design that embodies both the art nouveau and art déco movements,” according to their website.

The couple’s love for art nouveau and art déco can also be seen in their dining room, which boasts a beautiful wooden table with wavy legs and a botanical print on the wallpaper. This is in distinct contrast to the stainless steel, futuristic appliances, and black leather seating that feature in their kitchen.

The Ultimate “Modern Renaissance Man”

Robert Pattinson’s love for art nouveau is on full display in his office, which he designed himself. The room is filled with furniture from the 20s and 30s, and is surrounded by bookshelves, lined with art nouveau and art déco prints. It is, perhaps, the closest we’ll ever get to seeing Art For Art’s Sake.

The British actor is also a talented musician who plays the piano and violin, which feature prominently in many of his films. He has composed a number of original scores, and has been involved with numerous charitable causes, supporting a number of high-profile LGBTI/human rights groups. When asked what would be his perfect Sunday, Robert replied: “Picking my daughter up from Sunday school, taking her to violin lessons, going for a casual bike ride with my wife, and then heading to my studio to work on some music or design.”

We can probably expect plenty more to come from this stunning “modern renaissance man” in the near future.
