The Movie

Robert Pattinson 3D is the latest addition to the ever-growing 3D library. The film is based on the life of English model and actress, Sophie Hansen. It’s been described as a coming-of-age story that follows Sophie as she journeys from her late teens to early 30s.

Pattinson plays the role of Sophie’s father – a billionaire named Axel – who is one of the wealthiest people in the world. Having made his fortune in the fashion industry, he likes to live life to the full and does so in the most luxurious ways. He buys his daughter the best education and sets her up with mentors in the industry. He wants her to follow in his footsteps and be a powerful business woman one day.

When she reaches age 17, Axel, who is obsessed with looks, decides that Sophie should have plastic surgery to enhance her appearance. This results in some pretty humorous (and slightly confusing) scenes. Sophie then moves to Italy with her photographer husband, Luke, where she studies Italian culture and language. It’s here where we meet Luke’s family too, a nice touch that adds a bit more authenticity to the story.

After a few years in Italy, Sophie returns to London and buys a large house where she puts up a sign that says, “Welcome to my sanctuary. Come in, make yourself at home and feel free to roam about.” In the film’s climax, we see Sophie – now aged 32 – surrounded by the men in her life (her husband and father). She’s deciding what she’s going to do with the rest of her life and the last scene shows her choosing a cuckoo clock as the centerpiece for her living room.

The 3D Experience

If you’re one of the millions of people who enjoyed the spectacle that was The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, then you’ll want to see everything in 3D. And if you’re an even bigger fan of Peter Jackson, you’ll want to see every one of his movies – even the more recent ones – in 3D. Unfortunately, Peter Jackson hasn’t made a 3D movie yet, so there’s no rush to see them all.

To satisfy your 3D cravings, you have a couple of options. First, you can go see Robert Pattinson 3D, which will put you right back in the scene. In fact, the only real difference between this version and the regular version is that the sound has been added to the image (in the form of 5.1 surround sound). Essentially, 3D isn’t that different from 2D, it’s just a different way of looking at the same old film. It isn’t like you’re watching a TV show and you have to strain your eyes to see the screen. With 3D, everything is heightened and you’ll want to reach out and grab the things in front of you.

The Technology

The technology behind Robert Pattison 3D is actually quite impressive. The movie was shot using the ARRI Alexa camera, an all-new generation of digital cinema cameras that are completely interchangeable. This allows professionals to work seamlessly from one camera to the next, as they are brand new and have no wear and tear to consider.

The ARRI Alexa is a 23.8K resolution native 4K camera with an advanced image processing chip that can capture and playback high dynamic range (HDR) images – including exposure bracketing and LUTs (lookup tables) for gamma correction. Let’s not forget about the camera’s ability to capture and play back 100% of the audio range too. While this might not sound like a practical application to some, being able to record a concert in its entirety has many advantages. If you’re a music buff or a podcast lover, then you’ll want to see everything in high quality.

In layman’s terms, native 4K means the camera captures images at 4K by default, rather than having to be reduced to 2K during post-production. And since ARRI has made the chip that powers the camera fully compatible with the industry-standard SD card, there are no compatibility issues to consider. Simply insert the SD card and start shooting.

Along with the ARRI Alexa, the crew used the following cameras to shoot Robert Pattison 3D:

  • Canon T7i
  • Canon 5D MkII
  • Fuji X-T2
  • Panasonic GH4
  • Leica M Camera
  • Foster Lilly VISION 340B+

As you might imagine, this is a whole different ballgame from the gritty crime dramas for which he is best known. Let’s put it this way: Peter Jackson is going back to what he does best and the results are bound to be fantastic.
