You’ve probably heard of the Met Gala. It stands for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s annual Costume Gala, which took place on May 5th. Celebrities, socialites, and fashion folk from all over the world come together for this exclusive event, held in New York City. The theme for the 2019 Gala was “Pantsuit Parade,” which is a play on words that pays homage to the 1960s and the fashion trends that inspired it.

One of the highlights of the evening was the presentation of the Diamond Awards, which honor extraordinary achievement in cutting-edge creative work. One of the five awards given out that night is for Excellence in Costume Design, and it was presented to none other than the superstar behind the fashion phenomenon that is “Pattinson.”

The designer took the stage in a mesmerizing display of opulence that would make even the most fashion-forward ballerina swoon, and then made an immediate impact by dropping the mic and racing across the stage for a private chat with Twilight icon Bella. The two shared a brief moment in front of the audience, before Pattinson returned to his seat and the ceremony continued.

Excellence in Costume Design

The award for Excellence in Costume Design was handed out at the 2019 Met Gala and went to none other than the stylish Rob Pattinson. It was the first time that this prestigious award was presented at the event, which celebrates the best of American and European arts and crafts traditions. This year’s winner was chosen due to his innovative approach to designing outerwear that is inspired by art and music. We’re referring, of course, to Pattinson’s monumental 2018 fall/winter collection.

The designer took the stage in a majestic ensemble that included a floor-length cape, an embroidered cape, and matching pantaloons. This is a first for a designer at the Met Gala: a designer who is not a member of the American aristocracy. Pattinson continued his speech by paying tribute to Isadora Duncan, an early 20th century dancer, choreographer, and educator, who encouraged creativity and originality among her students. “In her honour, let’s bring our creativity and originality to this collection and to this event,” he declared.

Pattinson’s mainstay designer, Salvatore Ferragamo, was on hand to present the award and to share a few words about the designer’s illustrious career. The Ferragamo family is one of the most successful and renowned families in the history of the luxury shoe brand. The company was founded in 1874 and is headquartered in Florence, Italy. While Salvatore Ferragamo is arguably the most famous face of the brand, it is his son, Stefano, who has taken over the company’s artistic direction. He is responsible for all of the company’s creations and has been cited as one of the world’s best fashion designers. In 2018, Stefano was named the creative director of the Met Gala. One of his previous achievements was creating the Spring 2018 collection for Ferragamo. It included floral print dresses and colorful print pants, paired with printed and embroidered dupatta and stole.

Bella And The Ballerina

You may know that we are infatuated with the iconic fashion couple Bella and Rob, so it should come as no great surprise that we were especially happy to see them meet and interact at such a prestigious and fun event. The famous fashion couple has been together for almost 15 years and have three children together. Their eldest daughter, Alice, has been involved in the family’s design career from an early age, and even walked the ramp with her mom at the Met Gala. Bella has been an integral part of the famous Twilight franchise since the first installment of the saga was released in 2012. Rob appeared in all of the Twilight films, and the audience always gave him a standing ovation upon his entrance. He most recently directed and starred in the erotic thriller, Good Time, which was based on the Belgian novel, Les Liaisons Dangereuses. He is known for his flamboyant style, which often involves sequins and bold prints. We also love his spontaneous dance moves and the way he expresses himself through his clothes. (We can do a whole blog post on his fashion style if you’d like.)

Beside The Magnificent Seven, There Were Seven More

There were many more winners, including outstanding work by:

  • Helmut Lang
  • Monique Lhuillier
  • Jovani McAfee
  • Michael B. Mckenzie
  • Issey Miyake
  • Prada
  • Chanel
  • Dior
  • Valentino

These people are fantastic craftsmen and women, and their work is impeccable. It’s not every day that we get to see such an extraordinary display of creative genius, and it makes us incredibly proud to be Americans.

It’s safe to say that you’ll never get bored of seeing fashionable stars at the Met Gala. The famous museum has assembled a magnificent seven, and it was quite an amazing display.

One of the more interesting tidbits about this year’s Met Gala is that, for the first time in its history, it did not have a single woman in attendance. The absence of “ladies’ wear” was noticed, and it was somewhat of a letdown for the fashion folk who were longing to see the day when the event would include at least a few female icons. There have been calls to make the Met Gala an all-inclusive event, which would include women’s wear. Hopefully, this will not be the last time that we see such a magnificent display of style at the museum.
