If you are unfamiliar, the Academy Awards are an annual Oscar ceremony that recognises the best in cinema. This year’s ceremony was held on March 4th and Rob Pattinson’s portrayal of Edward Cullen in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 won the coveted Best Actor award. As usual, the ceremony was hosted by a funny man, Jimmy Kimmel, and it was watched by a record-breaking number of people.
While Rob’s performance was phenomenal, the fact that he is a relative unknown internationally is perhaps what made the difference. It’s not often that Hollywood’s biggest stars venture beyond the big screen and into the world of comedy, and even fewer actually shine in the role.
Who is Rob Pattinson?
Rob Pattinson is a British actor and filmmaker. He was born in London and raised in Brighton. He briefly attended college in Leeds, England, and then headed off to Los Angeles to pursue his acting career. After landing bit parts in a couple of films, he got his big break when he was chosen to star in The Twilight Saga as one of the most popular fictional characters of all time (the others being Nicholas Hoult and Taylor Lautner).
Since The Twilight Saga, Rob has continued to act in a variety of films, including the Ocean’s Eleven trilogy, which began in 2012. In 2014 he released his directorial debut, the comedy The Divergent Series: Insurgent, which was well received by both audiences and critics alike. He also stars in the upcoming horror-thriller, Watchers, alongside Julianne Moore and Cara Delevingne – another high-profile role for the actor. Aside from being an accomplished actor, he is also a published author. In 2012 he released his debut book, Room on the Broom, which was a children’s book that dealt with a young boy’s experience of moving into a new home. In 2014 his second children’s book, Lola’s Lucky Day, was released to great reviews and has become a worldwide bestseller. He also recently published his first adult book, The Price of Pleasure, about a married couple’s yearlong holiday to Italy. He has one child with his first wife, Rosie, and another child with his current wife, Talulah. He also has a pet pig called Wigwam and a Maltese dog called Mowgli.
Why Is Edward Cullen So Popular?
While it’s true that Rob’s portrayal of Edward Cullen in The Twilight Saga was superb, it is the sheer volume of work that he has starred in that has made him so popular. From a supporting role in the first film to a lead in the fourth, Rob has somehow managed to avoid playing the same character for more than a decade. Fans of the franchise will remember that he originally played the role of the reserved ‘good guy’ in Twilight and the sequels – a role that was essentially identical to that of his character in the upcoming film, The Divergent Series: Insurgent. In the first two games of the series, Edward is the only character to remain relatively unchanged throughout the entire story – aside from the weapons he has at his disposal. The fact that Edward is one of the few film characters who has developed his own unique personality and story arc is what makes fans love him so much.
Why Are The Ocean’s Eleven Characters So Popular?
The fact that the original Ocean’s Eleven film crew reunited for the 40th anniversary remake only adds to the popularity of this film. Aside from the usual suspects, the remake featured Woody Harrelson and Bernie MacLeman, who were both members of the original cast, along with Harry Connick Jr. and John Cleese. Harrelson played the part of the professional thief, Georges – while Connick Jr. portrayed his nemesis, Miles. Connick Jr. went on to become a regular on the series, appearing in all but one of its films and hosting the award-winning ‘Harry Connick Jr’s One-Man-Show’ at the New York Comedy Festival. Cleese, meanwhile, has become a bit of an institution as the always-smiling ‘Mr. Bean’ character. He even went on to star in his own series, How Does He Do That? which centres around his attempts to do magical tricks – some of which involve cooking. Cleese’s character eventually gets fed up with his inability to cook and turns to a professional chef for help. It’s safe to say that no other fictional character has ever been portrayed as well as these guys have.
Why Do Fans Love Taylor Lautner’s Jacob Black?
Taylor Lautner, star of the Twilight Saga films, has gone on to have a successful acting career, appearing in major films like The Maze Runner and Jurassic World and securing guest spots on hit television series like Bones and The Handmaid’s Tale. In 2014 he played the lead role in the Divergent Series: Allegiant and was able to show a different side to his character, Jacob, who was previously seen as a child in Twilight. He grew up to be more mature and responsible, and while he still enjoys a good joke, he can also be a very serious character when necessary. His appeal, however, still comes from his ‘awesome’ looks and the fact that he is a relatively unknown quantity to international audiences is what makes him so attractive to fans – as much as the depth of his characterisation and the fact that he has played a child and a teenager with equal success. In his latest film, The Oath, which was released last month, Jacob is faced with his biggest challenge yet – saving the human race after a global catastrophe.
Why Do Fans Love Nicholas Hoult’s Alistair Crowley?
While it’s true that Nicholas Hoult has appeared in a variety of films, including the 2006 drama, Millions, it was his portrayal of Alistair Crowley in Netflix’s popular series, The Handmaid’s Tale, that has made him famous. Hoult plays the part of the headmaster of a finishing school for young women, where he trains and moulds young ladies into sophisticated members of society – for their husbands’ friends and families. He does this by offering them ‘braided happiness’ – a catchphrase that has become somewhat of a motto for the character. While Hoult clearly has a talent for playing authority figures, it’s his comedic timing that makes his characters so much fun to watch – especially when he is playing someone who is supposed to be serious, like the headmaster. Hoult’s comedic timing is actually something that he was born with – his father is the renowned comedian, Tim Hoult, and his uncle is the actor, Richard Hoult.
Even though he has appeared in a wide array of films, it is his role as the mysterious and elusive Mr. Jingles in Paddington that stands out for fans. The popular English novelist, Michael Bond, based his 2007 children’s book, Mr. Jingles, on a real-life case of mistaken identity. When Bond’s character discovers that someone else has been using his identity, he sets out to prove his identity by tracking down the ‘imposter’ and forcing him to admit that he is Mr. Jingles to the whole town. What makes Bond’s take on the character special is that he gives us a glimpse into the world of an old gentleman, who is a bit of a character in his own right. After being tricked by a stranger into travelling across country to help settle a bet, Bond is thrust into a new adventure with his trusty sidekick, Threepio – a giant robot bear. The two of them begin to unravel the mystery of who this Mr. Jingles is and why he is wanted by the police, resulting in a slapstick struggle that is both exciting and laugh-out-loud funny.
What Will Happen In The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 3?
After Twilight, the success of The Twilight Saga was unprecedented and fans were eagerly awaiting the next instalment in what has become one of the biggest franchises of all time. The fourth film in the series will see the return of many of the original cast – including Kellan Lutz, as charismatic werewolf, Billy, and the charmingly dorky James Marsden as John Cullen, Bella Swan’s dad. What makes these two fantastic actors even more popular, however, is the fact that they are relative unknowns outside of North America – having never before played major roles in international productions. While the film will be released in several different formats – some for television and others for cinema – international audiences will have to wait until at least 2019 to see these two great British actors on the big screen again. The film will be released in America in November 2018 (with UK release a little later).
