Best Actor In A Leading Role
1. Robert Pattinson in Solo: A Star Wars Story (2017)
The international sensation that is Robert Pattinson continues to amaze audiences everywhere with his talent and charm. With three Oscar nominations under his belt (including one for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Cosmopolis), it is hard to imagine that anyone could still have the same impact on audiences today as they did the first time around. In addition to his outstanding acting in Solo: A Star Wars Story, fans also remember him as one of the greatest young Shakespearean actors of his generation (which, essentially, he is).
In fact, the highly anticipated Life marks his comeback to the big screen after nearly a year away, and it is evident that audiences everywhere are still eager to see what the famous faces of tomorrow have to offer. Even if Life does not end up being quite as good as everyone hoped, it is highly unlikely that anyone will ever forget the unique charm and natural charisma of Robert Pattinson.
Best Actress In A Supporting Role
1. Kaya Scodelario in The Greatest Showman (2017)
Kaya Scodelario is a British actress who first came to public attention with a starring role in the 2016 biographical film Sigrid, which was based on the real-life story of the German equestrian Sigrid Meier. While the film itself was not widely viewed (mostly due to its limited theatrical release in the United States), Scodelario’s performance as the eponymous Sigrid was widely praised by American and European critics alike. The following year, Scodelario would go on to star in another British biopic, The Light Between Oceans, which also received largely positive reviews. Most recently, Scodelario starred in and co-produced the German television film The Bridge, which was nominated for a prestigious TV Emmy.
While her performances in the aforementioned films did not earn her any particular awards accolades (even though she was nominated for a BAFTA for Sigrid and was included on the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s ‘2017 Top Ten Rising Stars’ list), Scodelario’s acting talents are clearly recognized by both fans and critics. It seems that the only way for Scodelario to go is up, meaning that her star is only set to continue rising in the years to come.
Best Actor In A Comedy Role
1. Colin Farrell in Death To Salesmen (2017)
Although he is most well-known for his dramatic roles (he won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role as Jimmy Caan in Woody Allen’s 2005 movie Annie Hall), Colin Farrell has proven that he is also able to pull off a funny role with ease. Indeed, in addition to Death To Salesmen, which was also nominated for a Golden Globe, the actor has also starred in two other movies that were ranked among the Top Ten in the Top Ten Films Of 2017 List on Netflix: The Breakfasts Of The Elite and Fighter Pilots. In the former, he plays a middle-aged man who has to take care of his ailing wife, while in the latter, he is a World War II fighter pilot who has to take care of his two orphaned children.
Although his dramatic and comedic acting performances are mostly seen separately, it is important to keep in mind that they are ultimately two sides of the same coin. For someone who is able to pull off both dramatic and comedic roles with such ease, it would not be too far-fetched to suggest that Colin Farrell has found his calling in the world of acting and is well on his way to becoming a serious contender for the title of England’s greatest export.
