Rob and Christina are married, but have been friends for years. After appearing in a series of Twilight films together, the pair decided to take their friendship to the next level and began exploring the idea of having children together. In 2013, they decided to pack their bags and head to Italy to begin a new life as a family. In 2014, the couple welcomed their first child, a son named Jett, and began fulfilling their childhood dreams of creating a family of their own. The duo are now expecting their second child, a daughter named Liv. In this interview, they open up about how their whirlwind romance and subsequent pregnancy came to be.
In 2012, as the Twilight franchise was gaining popularity and transforming into a cultural phenomenon, the media started running stories about the actor Rob Pattinson and the model-actress Christina Ricci. The pair had first appeared together in 2009’s Twilight, and had since gone on to work on a string of Twilight films, as well as the upcoming New Moon installment. In June 2014, the couple was spotted celebrating their six-year anniversary with a romantic dinner in Stockholm, Sweden. Later that month, they were photographed at the UK premiere of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse holding hands and appearing to be thoroughly enjoying their time together.
Although the pair had been friends for years, it wasn’t until 2012 that the tabloids started dubbing them ‘IT’ (Infinity Tango) or ‘Suzie and Chip’ due to Chip being a pun on Christina’s previous marriage to David Arquette. Despite their romance moving at a snail’s pace, it seemed that Hollywood had other ideas and decided to give the couple their own franchise, with the potential to lead to a spinoff series.
A Surprise Proposal
One of the couple’s first joint public appearances since their whirlwind romance was in October 2013, when they appeared at the New York premiere of their latest film, The Great Gatsby. During the movie’s premiere, Christina’s father and grandfather watched on in shock as their daughter romanced the handsome star of the film. Little did they know that a few weeks earlier, Rob had bought the perfect engagement ring, and he was waiting for the right moment to propose.
“It was such a beautiful day, and one that I will always remember,” Christina recalled in an interview with Vogue . “We were filming outside in the pouring rain, and Rob had just finished shooting his last scene. We were all soaked, and he looked absolutely wonderful. Everyone was waiting for the next scene to begin, and I saw that he was kind of fiddling with this ring. It was so romantic, and I just turned to him and said, ‘What are you doing?’ He looked at me and said, ‘I love you, and I want to marry you.’”
“We went to my grandparents’ house for dinner that night, and I wanted to enjoy my last night in New York with Rob,” she continued. “So we went to Times Square and found a restaurant there. While we were waiting for our food, I held his hand and got down on one knee and proposed. My aunts and uncles were so surprised, and my grandparents were in tears. It was such a special moment.”
Following the proposal, the two went on to star together in the 2014 films The Birth of Venus and The Great Gatsby, as well as New Moon, in which they play the young parents of a baby girl named Charlie. While filming the last Twilight movie, New Moon, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, the couple were inundated with romantic proposals. They even had to turn down a wedding gift from a fan who flew in from Texas to propose.
An Italy-Inspired Honeymoon
The year 2014 was a busy one for the newlywed couple. They spent their honeymoon in Italy, traveling around Tuscany and visiting famous art galleries and culinary hotspots along the way. The couple kept a blog of their travels, documenting their adventure and sharing their love for Italian cuisine and culture.
“We went to Florence, where we stayed in a palatial hotel with a private chef,” Christina revealed during an interview with Vogue . “Florence is such a romantic city, and we spent a lot of time wandering the streets and looking at the art. It was incredible!”
“Every day we would go for a walk, and he would hold my hand so tightly as we walked through the streets,” she continued. “He is so protective of me, and I love that he is so attentive to my needs. It’s just him and me, and we make each other happy.”
The following year, the couple returned to Italy a few times for family vacations, until they eventually decided to make the country their permanent residence. In April 2018, they purchased a home in the Tuscan countryside and began looking for ways to spend their time other than working. In addition to touring Tuscany and spending time with their children, the pair are also investing in a new lifestyle brand named Ravel.
Building A Family
While the couple have been keeping busy working, they have also been busy having children. In 2014, after completing shooting on The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, the actress decided to undergo IVF treatment, which worked successfully to conceive their son Jett, in January 2015. In April 2016, the couple welcomed their daughter Liv into the world, and the following month, they revealed that they were expecting their second child, a daughter named Juliet. In August 2018, the couple made the brave decision to share their story with the world, and opened up about their infertility struggles in a heartbreaking Instagram post.
“When we found out that we were unable to have another baby, it was a massive blow,” Christina said during an interview with People magazine. “We had been trying to have another baby for a while, and it just didn’t feel right. When we found out we couldn’t, it was devastating. We felt as if we had failed as parents. We had done all of the right things – we had followed all of the advice – and yet we still couldn’t have a baby.”
Pattinson continued, “It really opened our eyes to how precious life is, and how much more you need to look out for your children’s needs. It’s not just about you anymore. It’s about what’s best for your kids. It was a really tough time.”
With the help of a surrogate mother, the couple welcomed their second child, a son named Henry, in May 2019. As the years have gone by, the friends have grown even closer and now refer to each other as ‘siblings,’ and have vowed to be a family to their children.
