Things couldn’t have gone more spectacularly right for Edward Cullen and his friends. But what’s the future of the Twilight franchise? Will Stephenie Meyer’s favorite characters enter into a new era, or is this just the beginning? Let’s dive in.
New Characters, New Places, And New Directions
The most important point to make here is that the series doesn’t just focus on Edward and Bella’s love story. While it’s true that those are the stars that propelled the story to international fame, it’s also important to point out that this is a series that explores a wide array of different relationships. So while Bella’s love for Edward is at the heart of the story, there are other significant characters who play a crucial role in making the series unique. We got a sense of this in the last movie, when we learned that Jacob Black, Edward’s best friend, is actually alive and well. Despite previously being dead, the character still retained a significant role to play in the future of the Twilight saga. He may not have died, but he did something that changed the course of the story: He impregnated Bella before she got married, which resulted in her giving birth to a son, Benjamin, in 2022. For Jacob, this was a way of showing his love and devotion to Bella even after they were supposedly separated by death. The character got a small cameo in the final battle scene of the movie, when he helped Bella escape from the undead hands of Charlie. We then finally got to see the love between these two characters in full bloom, as Bella and Jacob share a passionate kiss while on the run. This was something that certainly didn’t happen in Stephenie Meyer’s original vision for the story, which came out in 2006.
But it’s important to remember that not all romantic pairings are created equal, and that not all of the characters who appear in the saga are destined to be together, even if they share a romantic interest in each other. Some will end up together, while others will end up in tragic and passionate love triangles. While it’s certainly exciting to see so many pairs of love interests in the spotlight, it’s also important to remember that these relationships are simply a part of the story. The aim of the series is to entertain, not to teach. So whenever the writers decide that a new character’s story is done, they will no longer be featured in future installments of the saga.
But Who Will Play Edward’s Partner In True Love?
When it comes to the question of whether or not Edward will end up with Bella, there are a few factors to consider. For one, we know that he already has a partner, Alice, with whom he shares an elaborate children’s Halloween costume. That being said, it’s not always easy for the heroes of romance novels to end up together, particularly since they usually don’t appear to be compatible at first glance. Take Daniel Day-Lewis and Susan Sarandon, for example. They played a married couple in the 1974 film version of Jane Eyre, but aside from their on-screen chemistry, they have almost nothing in common. In the 2015 reboot of Dracula, Dracula (Jackie Chan) is brought to life by the late great Hong Kong action star, Chan Woo-sang, but their on-screen pairing didn’t exactly spark joy in audiences. So while it would be wonderful to see Edward finally find love and happiness, it’s not necessarily guaranteed to happen. That being said, given how well Meyer’s original vision for the story turned out, it seems almost certain that Edward and Bella will end up together. At the very least, it’s clear that their love is something that the series will explore and not just a momentary whim to try something new.
One of the things that makes the Twilight saga so iconic is that it successfully weaves multiple love interests and interwoven story lines into a single narrative. It’s a feat that few adaptations can claim, and it certainly adds a unique complexity to the story. When all is said and done, this is truly an epic love story that deserves to be seen by anyone who finds romance novels entertaining, informative, or just plain fun to read. So while the future of the Twilight saga remains to be seen, for now, let’s take a look back at the past twelve months and remember the good old days.
