Robert Pattinson and Paul Dano are teaming up for a new adaptation of the classic novel, Pride and Prejudice. This new interpretation will be a co-production between BBC Films, Working Title Films and Focus Features.

Pride and Prejudice, written by Jane Austen in 1813, tells the story of the five Bennett sisters in 19th century England who are trying to find suitable husbands with limited financial and social status. The novel has been adapted into film, theatre and television multiple times, most famously in the 1995 BBC TV series starring Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy.

The new adaptation of Pride and Prejudice will be directed by Nick Hornby, who is best known for his work on the Oscar-nominated films An Education and Brooklyn. Hornby will also write the screenplay for the film, which will be set in the present day.

Robert Pattinson and Paul Dano Lead the Cast

Robert Pattinson, who is no stranger to period films with his roles in Bel Ami and The Lost City of Z, will play Mr. Darcy. Paul Dano, known for his roles in films like Little Miss Sunshine, There Will Be Blood and 12 Years a Slave, will play his arch nemesis, Wickham. Lily James, who most recently starred in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, will play Lizzie Bennet and Johnny Flynn, who portrays Bowie in the upcoming film Stardust, will play Mr. Bennet.

The cast also includes Jena Malone, who will play Mary Bennet, Suki Waterhouse as Lydia Bennet and newcomer Millicent Simmonds as Jane Bennet. Emma Thompson, who previously scored an Oscar nomination for her adaptation of Sense and Sensibility, will serve as executive producer.

What to Expect from the Film

The film is expected to be shot in the United Kingdom, with production kicking off in late 2020. Hornby has stated that he wants to remain faithful to the source material while making the film accessible to modern audiences. “I’m very excited to be bringing a fresh take on Jane Austen’s beloved classic to a new audience,” Hornby said. “The themes of Pride and Prejudice are timeless, – the importance of home and family, love, and marriage in a world dictated by social class. I’m honored to have such a talented cast to help me bring this story to life.”

The film is slated to hit theatres in 2021, so fans of Robert Pattinson and Paul Dano will have to wait a bit to see the duo in action. Until then, fans can look forward to other upcoming projects from both actors.
