Most of us know what a state park is and the type of activities that can be enjoyed there; however, not many of us know exactly where to stay when we arrive at a state park. This article will answer the questions of where to stay and what to do in Pattinson State Park, Wisconsin so that you can make the most of your time and visit the attractions that the park has to offer.

Pattinson State Park Accommodation

There are no hotels or motels at the park, so if you’re looking for a place to stay you’ll have to find accommodations elsewhere. Fortunately, there are plenty of options within a short driving distance of the park, so you won’t have far to search. There are also a number of campgrounds located within the park, so you can rest assured that you’ll have a place to stay every night that you visit.

The Must-Do’s

If you’re looking to make the most of your time at Pattinson State Park then you must do these things:

  • visit the park’s Welcome Center for maps and information about the area;
  • buy a Wisconsin Park pass, which covers entry to all state parks in the area (this can be purchased at the Welcome Center or at the park’s entrance) so that you can enjoy all the attractions at your leisure;
  • visit the Walker’s Point Lighthouse, which has a small museum attached and is open seasonally (this is a must for history buffs);
  • take a walk along the Beach Path, which is adjacent to the water and provides you with gorgeous views of Lake Michigan;
  • enjoy a beverage at one of the park’s many picnic areas; and
  • head to the park’s golf course for a round of golf, which is open to the public.

There are also a number of things that you might want to avoid while in Pattinson State Park:

  • don’t eat seafood unless you cook it yourself (seafood served at the park’s restaurants is usually frozen);
  • don’t go inside the water except in areas that have been specifically designed for swimming (most of the park’s beaches and shoreline are considered too dangerous for swimming due to their rocky and sandy nature); and
  • don’t bring cigarettes or illegal drugs to the park (you will be turned away at the gates if you try to enter with these items).

If you plan on visiting the beach then be sure to bring your bathing suit and towels with you. You will not be allowed to rent beach equipment nor will you find any at the park, so if you forget to pack it then you’ll have to buy it in the gift shop (this is fairly expensive considering that you have to pay for it individually anyway).

The Golden Rule

When visiting any state park, the golden rule is to follow the rules and regulations that have been established by the park’s management. If you read the rules and follow them then you won’t have any problems with the authorities (although you might get a bit annoyed by some of the rules, particularly those that prohibit pets and restrict how you can use your cellphone), and you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy your visit without any headaches.

If you break a rule or regulation in the park then you will receive a citation, which you have to pay for. The worst that could happen is that you’ll get a warning, which will remain on your record for a certain amount of time (this also depends on how serious the violation was and whether or not you had any prior warnings). In most cases, a citation will not be issued unless you blatantly ignore a rule or regulation – in other words, it’s better to obey than to get in trouble.

Some rules may seem obvious, while others may seem less obvious (but can be quite useful). For example, when visiting a state park it is polite to tip the park’s staff (gastropubs, coffee shops, and other businesses located within the park that serve alcohol can choose to be paid in cash or with a meal voucher – it is up to them which option they prefer).
