Kristen Stewart has been a part of the Twilight family for years, playing the dorky but lovable redhead, Bella Swan. But it was recently revealed that the 22-year-old actress is signed on to play a different character entirely in the next installment of the Twilight franchise, Eclipse.

Eclipse

No official title or plot description has been released for the highly-anticipated third film in the Twilight series, but it’s been rumored that Kristen will play the lead female character, a 17-year-old named Renée. The film will be directed by David Slade (50/50, Game of Thrones).

Renée is described as a “free-spirited” teen who is “dazzled” by the dark and mysterious Jacob (Taylor Lautner). While Bella is now a grown woman, Kristen stated in a press release that she sees Renée as a chance to be “more vulnerable and emotional.” She continued:

“There’s a lot of darkness in the story, but it’s a chance to have some fun with it as well… When you play a character that’s a little more vulnerable, it’s interesting to see how the fans react. It’ll be interesting to find out how they feel about Renée.”

While Eclipse is a chance for Kristen to explore new aspects of her character, it will also mark the final installment of the Twilight franchise. The actress recently shared:

“I think it’s important to have a satisfying conclusion to a story. At the same time, I’ve always wanted to try and tell more nuanced, interesting stories. So I think that both of those things are going to happen within this movie.”

Bella’s Pregnancy

Aside from the fact that Renée will be playing a very different character in Eclipse than Bella, there’s another major storyline that will be explored in this third film. Bella is finally going to be given the happy ending that she’s been waiting for since the beginning of the series. But it’s going to come at a price.

As we know from the previous two movies, Bella is pregnant in the Twilight universe. And in true Hollywood fashion, the actress has decided to make the most of her situation by playing the role of pregnant woman. The new trailer for Eclipse shows us just how talented and gorgeous Kristen Stewart is when she’s not behind the camera. But it also highlights how much she’s gained since her first appearance in Twilight. You can almost see the baby bulge beneath her black dress.

“I think that the fans will be really excited that we’ve addressed this issue from the beginning,” said director David Slade in a press release. “Bella has been waiting a long time to be able to explore this part of her life, so we’re really excited to give her that chance.”

A ‘Twilight’ Reunion

While this may be the last movie in the Twilight franchise, it doesn’t mean that the fans are bereft of hope for a reunion. Despite the fact that they’ve been living their entire lives in a make-believe world, Edward Cullen and Bella Swan have remained the closest of friends. And it looks like they’re finally going to get the chance to explore what their future holds together. Details are still fairly scarce, but it was revealed at CinemaCon that a ‘twilight’ reunion would be one of the highlights of Eclipse. Director David Slade even went so far as to say:

“I can’t think of a better way to finish the story than to have these two wonderful characters be able to share one final moment together, to say goodbye and to embrace what their lives would be like as a family,” said the filmmaker. “And that’s such an important message to leave the audience with, that even though they may be apart of this crazy, magical world, they can still find love and happiness together.”
