Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart officially became a couple this past January and since then, they’ve been enjoying a whirlwind of a romance. The actor, who was first linked to the Snow White actress in 2013, proposed to Stewart during the Venice Film Festival in September 2016. Six months later, on the evening of New Year’s Day, they were officially married in a small civil ceremony in France. The newlyweds celebrated their special day with close friends and family and then flew to Los Angeles for a short break before heading off on a long honeymoon trip to Italy and France. During their time apart, the pair filmed the critically acclaimed crime drama Nocturnal, in which they co-starred as a married couple dealing with a home invasion. On the heels of its premiere, the series was picked up for a second season, which will air in late March.

The Proposal

It’s fair to say that Stewart’s acceptance of Pattinson’s proposal was less than unexpected. The 35-year-old actress first confirmed their relationship in an interview with Vanity Fair in July 2013 and then reportedly went on to propose to the Twilight actor in Venice. “It was beautiful,” Stewart said at the time. “It’s funny, I’ve been going to Venice for like five years and never thought I’d propose there. But it happened, and I’m thrilled.”

The proposal wasn’t the only special moment of the film. The story of love, loss and redemption that connects the characters is heightened by the fact that it takes place during Italy’s famed carnival season. While many couples were posed for photos outside the famed Piazza San Marco, Stewart and Pattinson managed to find a quiet spot at the top of the square to ask each other’s opinion about the relative merits of Leonardo Da Vinci’s The Last Supper. According to Vanity Fair, they first discussed art while posing for the camera and then moved to the nearby Trevi Fountain for a private chat. There, the pair held hands as they contemplated their future together as a married couple. “He’s such a romantic, for someone so talented and gorgeous,” Stewart said to Vanity Fair in July 2013. “He’s so patient and understanding — not just with me but with other people as well. No one is ever really satisfied with what they get. But he makes me feel like everything is going to be perfect.”

The Wedding

More than a year later, Stewart and Pattinson wed in a small ceremony in Paris on January 1, 2017. The couple chose to wed at a registry office near their home in Saint-Tropez because, as Stewart explained to Entertainment Tonight a few months before the wedding, it was the only location nearby that also served as a venue for civil ceremonies. She added that they wanted to keep the wedding as private as possible and avoid any unnecessary media scrutiny. While the pair were first pictured together at a festival in Saint-Tropez in August 2016, their engagement and wedding were heavily guarded secrets. Fans weren’t the only ones kept in the dark — even members of their respective families weren’t invited to the wedding. (The Daily Mail reported in January 2017 that Stewart’s half-sister Nikki had been asked to attend the ceremony but she declined the invitation.)

The pair’s secrecy surrounding their engagement and wedding made for some awkward social media moments for Stewart. As the wedding approached, she was mocked on social media for being photographed wearing a fake engagement ring. “I’ve never been good at social media,” Stewart confessed in January. “I don’t like thinking about the past and looking at my engagement ring, so I don’t want to look at other people’s photos of me with my engagement ring. It’ll make me have images of an engagement ring in my head for the rest of the day. That’s why I always say, don’t show up my family and friends on social media, because I don’t want them to see these things.”

Despite her best efforts to avoid it, the wedding season was a challenging one for Stewart. When the cameras weren’t rolling, the actress was bombarded with requests for selfies, which she had to decline because, you know, to respect their privacy. Even when cameras weren’t rolling, the paparazzi would still follow them around and invade their space. “They have a job to do, and I have a job to do, so it’s not like we’re competing for the same thing,” Stewart said at the time. “People want to work hard in this world, and so do I. But I want to do it my way. I don’t want to be the person everyone is staring at. That’s not how I want to live my life.”

Nocturnal

Stewart and Pattinson’s first major collaboration came in the form of the critically acclaimed thriller-drama series Nocturnal. The eight-episode first season premiered in February 2017 and focuses on the married couple’s attempt to co-exist as a dysfunctional family burdened by the unsolved murder of their family friend and housemate. While many people may not know what else the actress does, everyone knows her work as a filmmaker. The show marks her directorial debut and it’s become her passion project. She started working on it in 2014 and spent a year and a half refining it, with the final cut taking her nearly three years to complete.

Nocturnal is an intimate look into the private lives of the Stewart family, which is something the actress has said she wanted to explore with her work as a filmmaker. The series is based on the real-life events that occurred during the making of the 2012 film Cloud Atlas. According to Vanity Fair, the project will explore “the disintegration of a family under the weight of tragedy and a patriarch’s untimely death.” To create a more personal connection to the series, Stewart used a variety of filmmaking techniques, including archival footage, on-set improvisation and intimate interviews with family members. She’s also said to have incorporated pieces of her own DNA into the show through the use of genetics-testing software. The first season of Nocturnal is now available on Netflix.

The Honeymoon

Stewart and Pattinson went on an intimate honeymoon in Italy in March 2017 and then split their time between Paris and New York City, where they continue to work. The pair are clearly enjoying a comfortable married life and they’ve taken the time to share the love on social media. The actress recently shared an Instagram picture of herself in an orange bikini lying on a beach in Saint-Tropez. “One of the best days of my life,” she captioned the photo, adding the hashtags #honeymoonswipelover #sainttropez and #marvelousmarriagetoast,” along with a heart-shaped balloon emoji.

Pattinson has also been busy sharing pictures and videos of the couple’s new country home, Pod 4, located in the French Alps. The location was chosen because, as Stewart put it, “it has amazing light throughout the year.” The property features a pool table, a spa, a fully equipped gym and a vast array of outdoor activities, including skiing and mountain biking. The pair took two weeks to travel to France and check out the property, which is owned by luxury real estate firm Sotheby’s. They also visited Milan during the trip and spent a day shopping for clothes and accessories. In one of the couple’s most recent Instagram posts, Stewart shared an intimate video of herself and Pattinson as they cook dinner together at the newlywed couple’s home in Saint-Tropez. In the video, Stewart can be seen putting a romantic spin on classic Italian dishes, while Pattinson grills some seafood.

The actor has also been active on Twitter, where he’s shared a series of intimate videos of himself and Stewart, as well as behind-the-scenes images from the set of Nocturnal. For her part, Stewart has also been busy posting a series of behind-the-scenes images from the set of the HBO show, as well as snaps of herself posing with famous friends including Kate Winslet and Reese Witherspoon. In one of her most recent Instagram posts, Stewart shared an image of herself and Winslet, both fully clothed, as they pose for a selfie. Along with the image, Stewart wrote: “Two of the most beautiful women I’ve ever known.”

It’s fair to say that Stewart is thriving professionally and personally; she’s been nominated for an Emmy, has a movie coming out in November and is happy with her life. On that front, she told Vanity Fair earlier this year that she wouldn’t change a thing about the way things turned out. “I had the most amazing experience last year and it was everything I ever wanted,” she said. “I wouldn’t change a thing.”
