You might know Robert Pattinson as the adorable and eccentric English actor who plays the character Edward Cullen in the Twilight films. Since its premiere, Twilight has become a cultural phenomenon, inspiring a devoted fan base and spawning countless imitators. Along with the success of Twilight, Pattinson has starred in several other big-budgeted Hollywood blockbusters in recent years, including the upcoming Death of Stalin. Now, with a new decade behind him, Pattinson is set to embark on a fresh round of movie projects.
Here’s a rundown of the key films set to hit theaters in the next year.
The Escape
Yes, The Escape is another trip to England for you. This time, Scarlett Johansson and Michael Fassbender head to London to bring us a new action-thriller about a heist that goes wrong. The film is based on the novel Fake It Till You Make It by John A. Williams, and shares its title with the short story that the book is based on. Both The Escape and Death of Stalin feature prominently in our list of upcoming English-language films because they’re two of the most exciting projects that Pattinson will be appearing in in the next year.
Joker
Yes, the Batman villain returns! Joaquin Phoenix stars as the titular character in the latest outing for DC’s most famous vigilante. The film also stars Robert Pattinson and Shia LaBeouf, and is directed by Todd Phillips. It’s been a while since we’ve seen a Joker movie, and this one promises to bring the rascal back with a bang! Joker is set for release in October.
Deadpool 2
Yes, the first Deadpool was pretty crazy, but the sequel promises to top it. Ryan Reynolds’ antihero returns with a whole new array of deadly weapons (and devices), as well as old friends. The film also stars Josh Brolin, Morena Baccarin, and Julian Dennison, and is followed by a third installment, Death Cure, which will arrive in theaters on January 18, 2022.
Stuck in Traffic
Traffic doesn’t sound like your typical Hollywood movie, but the movie that Steven Soderbergh has directed certainly is. The film stars George Clooney, Cate Blanchett, and Roberto Duran, with an ensemble cast that includes Benicio del Toro, Gabriel Macht, and Anna Friel. Soderbergh also wrote the script for this dark comedy, which will be released in theaters on April 10, 2022. If you’re looking for a change of pace from all the superhero blockbusters, consider giving Traffic a try.
The Lighthouse
Robert Pattinson will star in another World War II drama, this time based on the true story of a heroic stowaway whose daring act of espionage resulted in him being awarded the British Empire Medal. He’ll be joined in the cast by Kirsten Dunst, playing the key role of Billie. The film’s director, Robert Zemeckis, has also given the film a virtual reality experience, which you can dive into with a Google Cardboard or Samsung VR device. The Lighthouse opens in theaters on March 5, 2022.
Black Widow
Scarlett Johnsing is yet another face in the increasingly influential MCU, and yet another international star who will be appearing in an English-language production. This time, the famed actress plays the lead role in James Gunn’s upcoming Marvel film, Black Widow. The film will be released on April 23, 2022, and will serve as the much-anticipated introduction to the Avengers in the MCU. We cannot wait to finally see more of Johnsing, who has been a popular figure in movies for years. She’ll be accompanied by a stellar supporting cast that includes Anna Kendrick, Adrianne Palicki, and Lewis Macque.
The Last Tycoon
Speaking of popular figures in movies, Gary Oldman will be appearing in a large ensemble cast as titular character Elia James’s grandfather in Cecil B. DeMille’s epic 1923 film, The Last Tycoon. The film is based on the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel The Great Gatsby, and marks the English actor’s first appearance in an English-language film since his iconic role as Darth Vader in Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017). As you may have guessed, this is one English-language film that you don’t want to miss.
Star Wars
Yes, George Lucas’s magnificent space opera is back! Last year, we were treated to a whole new round of adventures for our favorite galactic heroes, as well as some iconic images that will remain engraved in our collective memories.
The latest adventure in the hugely popular series will be released on December 26, 2022, and will be followed by a sequel in 23-27 years. The year 2022 will mark the 70th anniversary of the Star Wars saga, and fans are in for a real treat as the franchise celebrates its rich history with several exciting projects. Although we won’t get to see the famous lightsaber battles in theaters, at least we’ll get to watch them on TV. The first new live-action Star Wars installment to air on a major American television network in over ten years will be shown this December, so stay tuned.
The Rumor
Another year, another English-language thriller for Robert Pattinson. This time, he plays the lead role in the movie adaptation of John le Carré’s 1974 novel The Devil in the White City. The story revolves around a legendary and sadistic serial killer who stalks the streets of Chicago in the early years of the 20th century. The Darkest Hour star was apparently very pleased to work on a non-superhero project, and he’ll be joined by Olivia Coleman and Aaron Paul, who both starred in the Game of Thrones TV adaptation. Directed by Tarsem Singh, The Rumor hits theaters on January 8, 2023.
There are a number of other interesting projects that Robert Pattinson will be appearing in in the coming year, including the Joe and Anthony Russo-directed Captain America: Civil War (based on the comic book by Joe and Anthony Russo). He’ll also be starring in the upcoming sci-fi thriller The Witness, and the fantasy drama The King, which is currently in post-production. The year 2022 will be an exciting one for Pattinson, and we can’t wait to see what projects the acclaimed English actor will be appearing in in the future.
