Robert Pattinson has played many iconic characters in films, but in Lost City of Z, he plays a much more dangerous role. As a ruthless businessman who lives by the motto ‘cash is king,’ he sets his sights on the wealthy Amos Decker (Christian Bale), whose family is on the verge of financial ruin. After killing several people in a staged accident, Pattinson forces Decker to work for him, on a trail to retrieve a legendary city that hides in the jungle.
The film was inspired by William Wallace’s poem ‘The Ruin of Ramadi,’ which was itself inspired by Alfred Lord Tennyson’s poem ‘The Kraken.'”
It’s a darker turn for Pattinson, who normally plays Romeo or other light-hearted characters. Even his character in The Magnificent Seven had a comedic element to it. But in Lost City of Z, he shows a glimpse of his darker, more dangerous side and he is phenomenal in the role.
The actor embodies the essence of a true capitalist: he is ruthless and dedicated to money, and he holds no respect for human life, as he proves when he commits several despicable acts, ranging from kidnapping to murder. As someone who admires both Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump, it is no surprise that he gravitates towards such complex characters.
