On June 25, 2014, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart were married in an intimate ceremony in France. The couple chose not to publicise the event and kept the celebration low-key, choosing to keep the details of their big day private. The secrecy didn’t last long, however, as news of their nuptials quickly spread across the globe.

Their wedding was a highly guarded secret until days before the wedding, when they both decided to be completely open about their relationship with PAPER magazine. In the interview, which can be read in full below, Stewart talked about her decision to have more private celebration and revealed details of her relationship with her co-star.

Wedding Plans

The actress, who initially got involved with the 31-year-old director while filming the vampire drama Under the Vampire Sun in 2012, admitted that she and her husband had planned to keep their engagement and wedding plans under wraps. The actor’s schedule was so busy that he was unable to commit to a specific date for the event, but he eventually said that it would be held in either France or Italy.

While in France, the couple stayed at the Hôtel de Crillon, which is a 5-star hotel in the heart of Paris. They used the occasion to announce their engagement back in April 2014, with Stewart writing on her official website:

“I’m very happy to share this exciting news with you. We’ve been talking about it for a long time and are thrilled to finally have the courage to commit.”

Stewart went on to reveal that she and her husband have booked a wedding venue in Florence and are looking for suppliers for the big day. She also revealed that she is keeping the names of the hotel and the venue a secret for now.

No Regrets

Although they both regretted sharing their plans with the press, Stewart said that she had no regrets about getting engaged to her Twilight co-star. She revealed:

“I don’t have any regrets about any of it. Not one bit. I was really scared before we did Under the Vampire Sun, and I don’t know if I would have done it the same way if I had known what was going on…But I don’t regret anything. I’m glad to be married to him, and I’m glad I did all those things.”

While Stewart said that filming Under the Vampire Sun was harrowing, she admitted that the experience had been good for her. She explained:

“It was definitely bad for a while. It was hard. It was really scary. But in some ways, it was really good for me. I think it made me a stronger person. Being in the moment, not knowing what’s going on, and then suddenly finding out that you’re playing dead the rest of your life…That was a lot to take in.”

Openness In Private

Although the couple kept their engagement and wedding plans under wraps for most of the year, they both admitted that they were becoming more open with each other. Stewart explained:

“We’ve been in this situation before where we’ve kept something private for so long that when we finally opened up, it felt weird. I don’t feel like myself when there’s a camera in front of me. That’s when I feel like the most insecure. When there’s no one around, it’s like…I can be myself more. I want to be able to share everything with Robert. He’s seen so much of me, and I don’t want to keep anything from him anymore.”

Pattinson revealed that he was also feeling more comfortable being himself around his wife. He said: “I’ve always been very open with her. I’ve always tried to be myself. I don’t know why, but when I’m with her, I feel like being myself more. Maybe it’s because I don’t have to worry about hiding anything.”

Facing The Fear

When asked if she was experiencing any fear about getting married, Stewart replied: “Yes, of course. I’m nervous. I’m pretty scared. But I’m also really happy. There’s a lot of butterflies in my stomach, but in a good way.”

Pattinson agreed, explaining: “I think she’s always been afraid, even when we were dating. I don’t know why. She’s a very brave person. That’s why I love her so much…She’s always been there for me, and she’ll always be there for me. I’m just happy that I get to be by her side, trying to protect her and take care of her for the rest of our lives. That’s what I want to do.”

More Than Meets The Eye

The couple both admitted that they had grown in their relationship. While Stewart said that she felt like she had known him for years, Pattinson revealed:

“It’s more than what you see on the surface. She’s become someone different to me…Someone more than I could’ve ever asked for. She’s my best friend, and I don’t want to lose her as a friend. I don’t want to lose my best friend. I don’t want to lose the person I love.”

To celebrate their one-year anniversary, the couple headed to Italy for a trip to Venice. It was there that they first confessed their love for one another. The clip, which was taken from a point-of-view camera worn by Stewart, shows the couple embracing as they float down the Grand Canal in a gondola. As the gondolier sings “Auld Lang Syne”, the sky turns a glorious shade of red, like the sunset, as the couple close their eyes and share a tender kiss.

The following month, they made their romantic debut at the Venice Cinema, where they watched the classic film Casablanca in Italian. Later that month, they released a video diary for their fans, in which they documented some of their favourite films and shared behind-the-scenes stories about the movies they were watching.

In August 2014, Stewart confessed that she had booked a trip back to Italy to visit her family for several days. During her stay, she visited the Amalfi Coast, where she filmed part of the upcoming movie Ma which centres around a bride-to-be who flees Italy for Canada after her engagement to a Mafia gangster is exposed.

Stewart went on to reveal that she and her husband had planned to visit every country in Europe during their one-year anniversary trip. Although this goal has since been delayed, they are still determined to see as much of Europe as possible. As part of their anniversary plans, the couple have also decided to take a detour to Antarctica, where they plan to spend six months studying the effects of climate change on the icy continent. They will head to the southernmost continent as soon as possible after wrapping up their anniversary trip in Europe.

Ambition To Learn

Since being involved with Twilight, Stewart has become something of a businesswoman, launching her own perfume company, L’Oreal Paris, and designing her own jewellery collection, KStew Cosmetics. Meanwhile, Pattinson has directed two music videos and starred in a short film, The Way He Makes Me Feel, which was nominated for a BAFTA in the UK and a number of other international film festivals.

The couple have big plans for the future. Stewart wants to continue designing her own jewellery collections, while Pattinson revealed that he wants to make more music videos and direct more films. They also want to continue their studies in Italy, with the aim of one day running their own film school.

In the interview, Stewart said: “I think, in a way, getting married has just made me realise how much I want to do. I want to work hard and make the most of every opportunity that comes my way… I want to learn so much.”

Pattinson agreed, adding: “It’s not always easy to see a path when you’re in the middle of it, but when you look back, there’ll be so many choices and so many opportunities…I don’t want to miss out on anything.”
