Kristen Stewart cheated on Robert Pattinson? It seems like a bizarre question, but considering all the drama that went down this year, it’s not totally out of line.
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 is officially out and, based on the first reviews, it seems like audiences and critics alike really liked it.
The film surprised everyone by becoming the highest-grossing Twilight film yet, and it even made Forbes’ 2016 List of The World’s Most Powerful Celebrities for the third consecutive year.
The drama behind the scenes of the Twilight films is well-documented, and 2017 was no exception. In June, Vanity Fair published an in-depth article about Kristen Stewart’s tumultuous year, which she dubbed ‘The Year of Tricky Ted.’
The article detailed how Stewart had to deal with her ex-boyfriend, director Rupert Sanders, and how their on-and-off-again romance influenced her career. The pair had a messy on-again, off-again romance that lasted for over a decade, and they got back together in 2014 just as Stewart was finding her feet in Hollywood again. They split in 2016, and throughout the year Sanders had been pressuring her to rekindle their romance. She finally did in December, and they were spotted enjoying a romantic dinner the very next day.
The stress of keeping their relationship a secret probably fueled Stewart’s dramatic weight loss in 2017 — she dropped seven pounds in a week — and she definitely looked the part of a grieving widow as she grieved the untimely passing of her husband. In addition to losing a ton of weight, she also changed her hair and makeup style, and she opted for more casual outfits as she showed her sympathy for Pattinson in the press.
It wasn’t just Vanity Fair that was interested in Kristen Stewart’s personal life this year. The actress was also in the middle of a major controversy surrounding a cheating allegation. In January, a woman named Summer Scott filed a lawsuit claiming that Stewart was the “mastermind” behind a multimillion-dollar theft of her identity and that she was the victim of financial and psychological exploitation. Stewart has repeatedly denied the allegations.
The lawsuit was eventually thrown out, but not before the court granted Scott unmonitored access to Stewart’s phone and email accounts. The decision was made in light of the serious nature of the accusations and given Scott’s past experience as a kidnap and ransoming victim, but it still raised concerns about judicial oversight in the case.
While Kristen Stewart was battling personal demons, her acting career was flourishing. She won numerous awards for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy for her role in Coffee With Coffee (2016), and she was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her role in Woman in Gold (2015).
She also became the first woman in history to direct a movie — a documentary called Marjorie Merriweather Post, the First American Lady of Broadcast — and she started her own production company, SpringSky Entertainment, to develop and produce her own films. Finally, Stewart won the BAFTA Rising Star Award in 2017.
It’s no secret that Stewart and Sanders had a fascination with each other and that their relationship carried over into their professional lives. In October, Daily Mail published an interview with Stewart in which she discussed the influence of Sanders on her acting career. “I think it’s fair to say that when I first started in this industry, I was a little insecure,” she said. “And it wasn’t until I started working with [director] Rupert [Sanders] that I felt like I knew what I was doing.”
Sanders even directed three of Stewart’s films: the horror romance Dead by Daylight (2014), the legal thriller The Night Before He Remarried (2016) and the comedy-drama Summerween (2017).
In June, Vanity Fair published an article detailing the repercussions that arose from Stewart’s decision to reconcile with Sanders. The article revealed how both Hollywood insiders and everyday people questioned the wisdom of the couple’s sudden and dramatic reconciliation, especially since Stewart had previously dated actor Johnny Depp and had been in a committed relationship with musician Charlie Peacock for over a decade.
The story also discussed how Stewart and Sanders were forced to make numerous appearances in the press to quell rumors that their reconciliation was a sham. Stewart and Peacock, however, both publicly refuted the notion that their relationship was a publicity stunt.
Then there was the lawsuit brought against Stewart by an aspiring actress who claimed that she was inspired by Stewart’s cheating scandal to start her own acting company. The actress, Summer Scott, claimed in January that Stewart was the “mastermind” behind a multimillion-dollar theft of her identity and that she was the victim of financial and psychological exploitation. Stewart has denied the allegations.
Finally, in November, Vanity Fair published another piece detailing the after-effects of Kristen Stewart’s year and how her personal and professional life were forever altered by the scandal.
Where Does This Leave Us?
Whether or not you believe the cheating rumors surrounding Kristen Stewart, there’s no denying that 2017 was a year of dramatic twists and turns. While the actress was focused on her personal life, she nevertheless performed excellently in front of the camera. Perhaps her most memorable role was that of the adult-film star Domina in Lucid, which was released in April. Fans of the Twilight films may recognize Domina as the prostitute whom Alice (Sarah Jessica Parker) pays to help her cope with the loss of her unborn child in Breaking Dawn – Part 1.
This was a huge year for female empowerment in Hollywood, and it was exciting to see so many strong, independent women leading the way. We can only hope that next year promises to be just as eventful.
