He said it was over, they said it was on, but is Robert Pattinson still engaged to Twigs?
The actor, whose real name is Bex Taylor-Wood, is best known for playing the character of Bella Swan in the blockbuster movie Twilight, and for being the ex-boyfriend of Kate Middleton.
Taylor-Wood confirmed that she and Pattinson split up in 2015, and though they remain on good terms, they haven’t dated or been in contact since.
But in an interview with Vogue in May 2018, the actor hinted that he and Twigs remain close, and that they may one day get back together.
He said:
“I think it’s flattering that people still care about me and my personal life almost six years after we broke up. It means a lot. It means a lot to know that you’re still admired and that your life is still relevant even after you stopped caring about what people thought about you. It makes you feel less vulnerable as an actor.”
The pair dated for two years, and were engaged to be married prior to Taylor-Wood confirming that she was no longer interested in getting back together with her ex.
“It’s funny, because at the time [of the engagement], I never really thought of him as a serious boyfriend. I knew he was interested, and I know he was sweet, and kind, and thoughtful, and all those things. But I never really saw him as a long-term boyfriend,” she told Vogue. “I think it was more that he saw me as a son. As someone to look after. And that was lovely.”
On the subject of their breakup, she added: “I think that for both of us, it was a really natural evolution. We’d been together for two years, and the last year of my engagement, we just didn’t see each other very much. We were apart a lot. We were busy with our careers.
“But I think that being away from each other and working hard was really good for both of us. It made us appreciate our time apart, and what we had, and allowed us to grow and to change as people. I think that being apart made us stronger. I think that we really needed to experience that to believe it. And I think it’s important to believe in the strength of your exes. Because as romantic as it might sound, sometimes you need to grow up and be independent of each other.”
Why Did They Split Up?
Pattinson has largely kept quiet on the subject of Taylor-Wood and the break up, only briefly referring to it in an interview with Red Magazine, but the reasons were largely due to the fact that she didn’t want to talk about it.
“We’ve both moved on,” she said at the time. “We’re both doing really well; we’re both happy. And we don’t really want to speak about it all the time. We have our own lives, and we lead our own private lives, and we’re okay with that.”
For his part, the actor has been vocal about his disappointment in the lack of attention paid to his personal life, particularly after he and Taylor-Wood split up.
“The truth is, I’ve been in a lot of relationships and a lot of breakups in the past six years, and they’ve all been very different to this one,” he told Red Magazine. “I guess, in a way, what happened with Twigs was a culmination of everything that’s happened to me in the past. It was as if all of those relationships had worked as a kind of preparation. Maybe they had. Maybe it was all about having the right experience, and meeting the right person, at the right time. I don’t know.
“I think that, in terms of my acting, there’s a sense that people have seen me as this really charming, funny, doting young man who’s sort of available and happy to be around,” he continued. “But there’s so much more to me than that. And I think that people are starting to see that now. They’re starting to see that I’m not that same, innocent person that they knew in high school, or even before that. I think that people are seeing that, even if they didn’t see it at the time, what happened with Twigs was inevitable.
Will They Get Back Together?
Pattinson has hinted that he and Taylor-Wood may yet get back together, telling The Sun that, although he loves his new partner, he’s found it challenging to lead a private life.
“It’s been a strange experience,” he said. “I’ve been in a very public domain for so long, and it’s been quite an adjustment to hide away, even though I’ve been incredibly grateful for the time that I’ve been given. In terms of my personal life, it’s been a real test. But it’s also been a real gift, I think.”
There have been rumors of a reconciliation for some time, with Taylor-Wood seemingly warming to the idea of a reunion.
“It would be very cool to work together again,” she told Vogue. “I loved working with Rob. We’ve had a lot of fun.
“I think it would be good for both of us. We have a lot to offer as a team, and I think it would be a good challenge working together again. What we had was really special. It was different to anything I’ve felt before. I don’t know if it was just because we were both waiting for the other to say ‘I do’, but I think it was more that we both really cared. I still care a lot for him, and it would be nice to work together again.
Will They Wed?
Pattinson and Taylor-Wood have yet to set a date for their wedding, though they have confirmed that they are planning on getting hitched.
“We’re getting married in the summer,” she told Vogue. “And we’re very happy about it.”
The actress went on to say that although she couldn’t disclose many details about the wedding, she did confirm that it would be a “small and intimate ceremony.”
“I’ll be wearing a white dress,” she said. “And I think that Rob will look dashing in a dark suit. I can’t wait to walk down the aisle toward the person I love most in the world.”
