If you haven’t heard by now, the English actor and singer Robert Pattinson has been starring in a series of movies based on the famous DC Comics character of Batman. He plays the role of the dark knight in the new Christopher Nolan directed trilogy of Batman movies: The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, and The Dark Knight 3D. If you’re a fan of the actor, you’ll no doubt be curious to see what he’s doing next. Is he taking a break from acting or is this just the first wave of projects for Pattinson? I think it’s time that we addressed this question.

The Upcoming Films

Before we begin, let’s take a quick moment to celebrate Pattinson’s new-found success. A few years back, few would’ve believed that he’d be starring in such big-budget movies. While many consider him to be a major step up from his previous roles, Pattinson still hasn’t achieved the level of recognition that he deserves. But with his multiple award winning performance in The Twilight Saga and his newly-found fame as Batman, maybe this is the right time for the English actor to step out of obscurity and into the forefront of Hollywood. Let’s take a look at his upcoming films.

The Rover

In January, we’ll see Pattinson’s first solo movie in a decade, The Rover. In the film, he plays an English billionaire who rescues a homeless man (Willem Dafoe) and gives him a chance at a new life. The plot is loosely based on the life of Richard Reynolds, one of the founders of Apple Inc. The project also stars Brenda Blethyn and Dennis Quaid. Check out the The Rover trailer here.

While we await this years most anticipated film, let’s take a look at some other upcoming projects. On May 12, 2016, we’ll see the highly-anticipated sequel Star Wars: Rogue One. In the film, he’ll play a mysterious character named Jyn Erso. The cast also includes Felicity Jones, Alan Tudyk, and Riz Ahmed. Rogue One is set to be another massive hit for Disney, raking in over a billion dollars at the box office. With his good looks and acting talent, it’s no wonder that Disney has chosen him to play a major part in their Star Wars franchise.

Nightwalkers

In June, we’ll see how Pattinson teams up with Ed Skrein (Deadpool) for Nightwalkers. Based on the classic 1960s TV show, the film centers around a team of detectives who solve crimes in New York City using their exceptional observation skills and high level of intellect. The actor will portray Richard Castle, the team leader and the father of the group. The film also stars Stacy Martin, Gabrielle Anwar, and Bill Camp. Check out the Nightwalkers trailer here.

Killing Them Softly

Pattinson will next star in the critically-acclaimed Killing Them Softly, based on the novel of the same name by George V. Higgins. He plays Charlie Mardell, an assassin who specializes in killings that go undetected for a long time. As the story opens, Mardell is hired to kill the wife and children of a crooked Chicago real estate developer named Floyd Farber. The hit is supposed to look like an accident but Farber’s brother-in-law Roger Shattuck (Samuel L. Jackson) hires Mardell to make sure that the job is done right. The film also stars John C. Reilly, Ray Liotta, Richard Jenkins, and Shea Whigham. Killing Them Softly has garnered positive reviews from critics and is considered to be one of the best films of the year so far. It is currently in theaters and is scheduled to be released on December 12, 2016.

The Lighthouse

Pattinson will also star in the upcoming psychological thriller, The Lighthouse. The story follows a writer (Pattinson) who becomes obsessed with a mysterious island inhabited by a group of artists and musicians. He eventually decides to travel there and meet the artists, which leads him to discovering their macabre secret. Robert Eggers, the director of A Cure for Wellness, said of the movie: “Anyone who has watched and loved the films of Martin Scorsese will no doubt be drawn to this beautiful, understated performance by Robert Pattinson. It marks a brilliant step forward for the actor and confirms him as one of the great contemporary talents.”

Valerian

Pattinson will next take on the role of Valerian in the big-budget sci-fi film Valerian. The movie is based on the legendary French writer Pierre Boulle’s speculative fiction novel The Bridge Over the River Kwai. It was first published in 1957 and has since gone on to become a common text in many a high school English class. In the film, Valerian is a brilliant engineer who is obsessed with creating a machine that can generate limitless energy. The movie also stars Alicia Vikander, Christopher Denham, and Matthias Schoenaerts. It is due for release in September 2017.

The Dinner

Pattinson will wrap up this list with his upcoming biographical drama, The Dinner. The plot centers around the 1966 Monterey Pop Festival, where Janis Joplin, Grace Bessie, and others performed. The film is the work of American director Greg Jacobs and is based on Stephen Sears’ book Janis: Her Life. The film will cover the leadup to and aftermath of the festival as well as the troubled and eventful lives of the performers. The cast also includes Aaron Eckhart, Eric Bana, and Olivia Wilde. It is currently in theaters and is due for release on October 26, 2017.

While some may still believe that Batman is Robert Pattinson’s only lead role, we’re likely to see more of him on the big screen. The actor has proven time and time again that he can play many different characters and exhibit a wide range of talent. Even more importantly, he’s shown that he has the drive and ambition to succeed in the industry. Right now, he’s arguably one of the most in-demand actors in Hollywood. There’s no question that the future of film and television is much more promising for Robert Pattinson. He may not have achieved worldwide fame as a result of his portrayal of Batman, but it’s quite clear that he has a special place in the hearts of millions of fans. With each new project, we’re treated to another glimpse of the charismatic and talented actor. It’s been an exciting month for Batman fans, and we can’t wait to see what 2017 has in store for us.
