Ever since the first Twilight movie came out, Rob Pattinson has been in demand as Edward Cullen. The actor has gone on to play the iconic role of the Dark Knight in the upcoming movies The Batman, The Dark Knight Rises, and now The Dark Knight. With The Batman, the world is finally going to find out whether or not Pattinson is actually capable of playing the role. Although the movie is years away from release, fans are already speculating about what will happen in the third installment. Could this be the beginning of a new phase in Rob Pattinson’s career?
New Dawn For Pattinson
While many had hoped that Pattinson would move beyond playing romantic leads, the actor has continually returned to that role even after signing on to play The Bat. After Edward’s first two movies, New Moon and Eclipse, hit theaters in 2010 and 2012, respectively, the demand for more from the actor rose sharply. Not only did he land a role in the highest-grossing movie of all time, the fourth movie in the Twilight series, Breaking Dawn – Part 2, make over a billion dollars at the box office, but he also received critical acclaim for his performance in 2014’s The Hundred-Foot Journey, playing a real-life person in the flesh. The movie, based on the real-life account of Mila Jovovich’s trip to Europe to track down the models who inspired her book, paid tribute to Jovovich’s deceased husband, artist and fashion icon Yves St. Laurent. Despite the critical praise, it was the demand for romantic leads that once again proved profitable for Pattinson, as he signed on to play the role of a lifetime in The Batman.
Dark Knight Returns
With The Batman, it seems as though Pattinson has finally found the role he was born to play. For decades, filmgoers have known the actor as the golden-boy of British cinema. Now, at the age of 28, they will get the chance to see if he can bring the intensity of a psychotic vigilante to the big screen. In an interview with Vogue, Pattinson commented, “It’s been a long time coming…I want to do something really different with this character.” With The Batman, he could very well do just that. Pattinson has repeatedly gone on record as saying that this will be the last time he plays Batman, but who knows – maybe he’ll change his mind and have another crack at the role.
Rumored Casting Alert
As the years have gone by, so too has the buzz surrounding the possibility of Pattinson donning the cowl once more. Although he has publicly said he will never play the character again, fans are taking this seriously. On the heels of his stunning performance in The Batman, rumors have cropped up that Pattinson could be cast as the Joker in the upcoming Gotham City Sirens movie, directed by Anne Curtis. Not only would this reunite Pattinson with one of his Twilight co-stars, Gemma Arterton, but it would also allow the two to play the classic comic book villains, Catwoman and the Joker, respectively. It remains to be seen whether or not this will happen, but for those who love to read, it is yet another great opportunity to add to their collection.
A New Phase Of Romanticism
As we know, Pattinson has long shied away from playing the romantic lead. Since his breakout role as Edwart Cullen in Twilight, he has gone on to play a variety of complex characters, but he has never truly been given a chance to shine in the romantic arena. With The Batman, it will be interesting to see what type of stories Warner Bros. opts to tell with this iconic character, and whether or not Pattinson’s dramatic range will allow him to effectively play a larger than life villain or a more sensitive lover.
While it would be wonderful to see Pattinson take on another iconic character that is not based on a book or comic book, it is safe to say that he will find success in the romantic lead department for at least one more film.
As for The Batman, it is set to hit theaters on May 25, 2021. With a cast that boasts one of the greatest collectives of leading men and women in Hollywood, this must-see movie will prove to be a game-changer for Pattinson’s career.
