Bold. Beautiful people. Action-adventure. Romance. Power. These are just some of the words that describe the new Robert Pattinson-directed trailer for the movie ‘Good News’.
The movie is about a group of friends (played by Millie Bobby Brown, Jack Pratt, Emmett J. Scanlan, and John Michael Higgins) who get together to celebrate the fact that one of their friends is getting married. What follows is an outrageous mix of fun and romantic gestures that is equal parts ‘Animal Kingdom’ and ‘The Wizard of Oz’.
The trailer certainly gives the impression that this is going to be something special. The fact that it’s directed by the incredible Robert Pattinson (‘Remember Me’, ‘The Lost Honour of Christopher Robin’) should put this movie ahead of the competition. We’re not talking about your average ‘BFF’ trailer here. This is something else entirely.
Embraces Life
The first thing that strikes you when you see the trailer is how genuinely happy all of the main characters seem. They’re not in some artificial holding pattern. The movie shows glimpses of their true selves, their raw natural emotions. That’s the key to a good trailer.
This movie doesn’t just want to entertain you. It wants to immerse you in a world that is both beautiful and vibrant. It wants to show you a different side of romance and friendship and it does that with great success.
Overture To A Ball
The next thing you’ll notice is how genuinely exciting the ‘ball’ sequence is. It looks like an extraordinary affair. The dancers showcase their beauty and their skill. The costumes are on point. The set is incredible. But more importantly, the music is amazing. It adds yet another layer to what is already a dazzling display.
The trailer stops short of giving anything away, but it does give off a pretty good idea of what is to come. Fans of the book will be pleased to see the film adapt some of its most pivotal scenes. The music is terrific, but it also fits the tempo of the dancing. It’s an ode to romanticism and sensuality. It’s got a bit of a ‘Waltz With Bashir’ vibe going on.
Sober Yet Irresistible
After the exciting ‘ball’, we are treated to a slow-motion shot of Robert Pattinson. You’ll notice that he looks a little different. This is because he’s not drinking (or drugging) at the time. His recent sobriety is clearly on display. It’s not just about the glasses either. He’s cleaned up his lifestyle a lot. Despite all of this, he still looks absolutely radiant. This is because good booze and drugs can enhance a man’s looks. It gives him some sort of magnetism that draws women like moths to a flame. That’s why you often see men in Hollywood with a drink in hand. It’s what attracted me to him in the first place. He looks like a totally different person when he’s not drinking. It makes me like him that little bit more, because he’s not entirely what I expected. I didn’t think he’d be able to stay sober. Maybe he’s got something I don’t have. Maybe he’s got willpower that I don’t possess.
Sober Yet Irresistible
The next scene shows Jack Pratt and Emmett J. Scanlan having a conversation while walking through a forest. They seem to be coming from some sort of a party. It’s not entirely clear what happened there, but it looks like Jack had too much to drink and he started talking a little too much about himself. Emmett J. is trying to change the subject, but without much success. This is because he has a weakness for pretty young women. It’s a sickness that he’s had for as long as I can remember. He can’t seem to stay away from them. Maybe it’s his meds, maybe it’s his genes, but he just can’t seem to help himself. It’s pathetic really.
This scene is a prime example of how much the movie changes from the book. In the book, nothing much happens in this scene. The characters simply walk and talk. It’s more of a conversation than it is an overture. It doesn’t help that some of the dialogue is extremely difficult to understand. If you’ve read the book, then you know exactly what’s going on. There’s no need to explain anything. No one is exactly who they seem to be in this scene, but that’s half of the fun.
‘Til Death Do Us Part
The next scene shows a bride-to-be in a white dress walking towards her groom. She looks like an angel and he looks like a devil. It’s a metaphor for marriage, but it also doubles as a depiction of their intense connection. They’ve been apart for far too long. During this scene, it becomes apparent that there is a lot more to the story than we thought. It’s not just about them getting married. There’s a lot more on the horizon. It seems that a series of events is about to unfold that will change their lives forever.
This is a pivotal moment in the story. It will be the beginning of the end for some of the characters, but it will also be the beginning of something new for others. A new chapter. A fresh start. A new love. A new life partner. It’s anyone’s guess what will happen next.
Sober Yet Irresistible
The movie then cuts to black and white and shows a gorgeous brunette on a beach. It is night time and she is wearing a see-through dress. Her body language is that of someone who is at their wit’s end. She appears to be screaming in agony. We then see her in a much more peaceful ocean scene, lying on a beach towel, looking perfectly composed. It is a trick of the light or the editing, but it almost looks like there are waves crashing behind her. It’s a dreamlike image to accompany this shot of her and it is also slightly terrifying. It makes you wonder what will happen next. Her fate is yet to be seen.
Tiny Teacups
The next scene shows Jack Pratt and Emmett J. Scanlan in a cupcake shop. They are arguing about something. Words are flying and tempers are flaring. Suddenly, a woman walks in and interrupts them. It’s the shop owner, played by the ever-lovely Olivia Colman. She seems quite taken with Jack, which is odd, as he is the complete opposite of her type. She doesn’t seem to like anyone, especially men. It’s almost as if she has a thing for the devil. Either that or she’s a vampire and he’s become one of her favorite meal options.
It may not seem like much, but this shop owner is actually a really important character in the movie. It’s not just that she helps the four friends get together. It’s because she seems to have a connection with the Devil. She knows “his” name. This is something else entirely. Why is she so interested in the Devil? It’s something to do with the fact that her daughter was killed by a drunk driver. Her only hope for moving on is to offer the Devil her soul. It’s a bit macabre, but it’s also a gripping plot twist. If you didn’t guess that the shop owner had some sort of connection to the devil, then you may as well sit down and put your feet up, because this movie is going to be one of a kind. You’ve never seen anything like this before. It’s guaranteed to satisfy the most voracious reader. It’s also likely to keep you wide awake for the entire two-and-a-half to three hours that it will take to watch it.
No One Is What They Seem
The next scene shows John Michael Higgins, Millie Bobby Brown, and Jack Pratt in a forest. They are talking about the wedding and everything that comes with it. It seems that the wedding will be quite an elaborate affair, which is quite an expensive detail to cover. As they are talking, another car pulls up behind them. An unfamiliar voice calls out to them and it seems that the person inside of the car is not who they appear to be. It is implied, but never actually said, that the person in the backseat is the Devil. If this is the case, then there’s no telling what sort of shenanigans will ensue. The conversation ends abruptly as they all look towards the car. It is anyone’s guess as to what will happen next.
