I liked Robert Pattinson before he was ever on our screens. I liked his music and followed his career from a young age. Now that he’s completed his four-year run on the big screen as Cedric, I can truly say that I like him even more. Let’s take a look back at some of the highlights from his acting career – both good and bad times – and try to understand why he became such a big-name actor in the first place.

The Good Times

For those of you who might be new to this blog, let me quickly introduce you to its namesake and star: Robert Pattinson. Yes, if you haven’t heard of him, that probably means you haven’t been living under a rock for the past four years. Let’s take a quick trip down memory lane and relive some of the best and the worst times from Robert’s career. This will help us to better understand why he is where he is today – and where he might be headed in the future.

The Best Of: Life On The Estate

I have to start this section off with one of his most iconic films and one of the biggest romantic comedies of all time, Life On The Estate. Released in 2013 and based on a book by Emma Bull, the film follows the adventures of Jane, a young woman who moves to a remote house in the English countryside with her brother Charlie. While there, she meets a group of characters who become her friends – including Mark, a photographer, and Oliver, a musician – and begins to enjoy a care-free life and quiet moments away from the hustle and bustle of the big city. What’s not to like?

I remember seeing this film for the first time and being absolutely charmed by it. From the opening moments – with Jane and her brother exploring the deserted house – to the ending – with the whole gang of friends gathering for one final dance – it’s always a pleasure to watch this film. And let’s be honest, being in Emma Bull’s company is always a delight. She’s witty, she’s sassy, and most importantly, she’s an amazing story teller. If you haven’t read any of her books, now is probably the right time to start. Just kidding.

Bad Times

On the other hand, let’s look at some of the darker moments – both good and bad – from Robert’s career. These are the times that might not necessarily make you want to jump on the bandwagon of his fans, but they’re essential for an in-depth understanding of his character. Take 2013’s The Road We Take for example. This was probably the most anticipated film of that year, and it did not disappoint. Set in present day New York City and following an epidemic that forces people to live in gas masks and isolation, the drama focuses on Alex (played by Robert), who is in a serious relationship with his college sweetheart Alice. However, their happy-go-lucky lifestyle doesn’t sit well with his family and friends, who begin to judge him and his future with Alice.

Yes, while certainly a romantic comedy, The Road We Take explores the gray areas of love and commitment. The dialogue is sharp, the performances are excellent, and the direction from Sean Baker is nothing short of amazing. If you have an hour and a half to spare, you should definitely check it out. It’s well worth the time. It’s also one of the few movies where Robert actually shows some emotion. He let’s his hair down and displays some anger for the first time in a while. It’s great to see. He’s played such a wide array of characters that it’s always nice to see a bit of a change in nuance.

Another example of a film that explores the darker sides of love and commitment is Two Mothers. This film was released in 2017 but is based on a true story that occurred in 2012. Set in contemporary Paris, the comedy focuses on Nathalie (played by French actress Anne Consigny) and her struggle to balance her career with motherhood. While attending a dinner party with her colleague Louis (Olivier Martinez), she meets Robert’s character Vincent and begins a secret relationship – unbeknownst to both of their spouses. What ensues is a hilarious tale of deception and adventure that provides glimpses of Paris at its most romantic. This is one of the best films of the year and a must-see for fans of romance and comedy. Again, if you’re looking for light-hearted entertainment, this probably isn’t the movie for you. But if you’re looking for something a little more serious, this is probably the one you’re looking for. And even if you don’t really like either of those genres, I’m sure you’ll enjoy the journey and the experience of watching these two great actors bring these characters to life on the big screen.

The Rise Of Robert Pattinson

Finally, let’s talk about the most recent entry in the list, Pattinson. I’m sure we’re all aware of how fast his career has risen since he last graced our screens as Cedric. It’s almost as if fans of a certain age and/or gender sensed that he was finally ready to show the world his talent and stepped up their game. As I mentioned before, I’ve been following his career for years and was excited to see what would happen next. And what happened next was incredible. He became one of the most in-demand actors of our time and is currently involved in several high-profile projects.

To start things off nicely, he revealed a few months ago that he would star in the fourth season of Stranger Things. This is arguably one of the most exciting developments in TV history. Not only will he be reunited with his Sesame Street co-star Elmo and Jimmy Kimmel Live creator Jimmy Kimmel, but he’ll be working with one of the most talented crews in the industry. It should be an incredible experience for fans of both worlds and for those who have followed along all these years. You can’t make this stuff up. The shooting starts next summer.

Then there’s his upcoming performance in Gucci’s new ad campaign. Set to premier later this year, the commercial will see Pattinson play the role of Italian fashion designer Gucci’s creative director. This will be his first appearance in a commercial and will no doubt be one of the biggest challenges of his career. Not only is it an important role to take on, but it will require him to embody both the creative director and Gucci itself. If this is something you’re looking for, don’t forget to keep your eyes open for this one. But, for the time being, his Instagram account is still overflowing with beautiful women.

The Future

Finally, let’s talk about the future. Where does Robert go from here? Looking back at his past, it’s pretty clear that he hasn’t really hit his stride yet. He’s still relatively new to acting and is probably only going to get better with more experience. If you were to bet on it, I’d put my money on him having a very successful future. And yes, it probably would require him to play some pretty ugly characters that may actually make you think twice about supporting him. But that’s what makes him so special. He can play whatever villain or anti-hero you want and still be the hero of the story. He knows how to sell a character and how to make you believe in them. It’s an actor’s actor, if you will.

It’s always nice to see a celebrity emerge from a small town and see how far their hard work and talent will take them. And, as an added bonus, he’s engaged to be married. So it looks like we’ll be getting another Harry and Colman McCarthy or Patrick and Sibel Kekilli soon. It’s going to be crowded around the corner…
