The Most Anticipated Movies Of 2022

The next year will mark the 100th anniversary of American cinema and, given Hollywood’s knack of naming movies after themselves, we could see a lot of special commemorative screenings. But beyond that, what will 2022 bring? The following list explores the most anticipated movies of 2022.

Black Widow

The year 2022 will mark the 10th anniversary of the character Black Widow and the breakout role played by Natalie Portman in the blockbuster movie Black Widow (2022). Now that the character has been established, sequels and spin-offs are inevitable and, while no details have been announced, fans can already begin to imagine what might come next.

Black Widow: Signature Red Dress

Of course, the most anticipated Black Widow movie isn’t the first one, but rather the upcoming sequel. While details are scarce, it was recently revealed that the sequel will star Scarlett Johansson as the iconic assassin Black Widow and will no doubt be playing a significant role in shaping the future of the character. It’s fair to say that Johansson’s casting marks the end of an era as the original Black Widow was played by an all-time great actress, Michelle Yeoh.

Black Widow (2020)

The first Black Widow movie (2020) was, in fact, the biggest hit of the year so far and has already broken several box office records. The film, which was directed by Cate Shortll and written by Sarah Ilene Stevens, follows the story of Natasha Romanoff, who after ten years in hiding decides to return to Moscow and find her brother. In a film career that began in 1998, Shortll’s previous work also included the 2011 hit Delivery Man, starring Dennis Quaid, and the popular Traveling Wilburys documentary series. In the first Black Widow movie, Portman’s portrayal of the character was arguably the strongest she’s ever had and her performance helped launch her into superstardom. While she didn’t appear in the sequel due to scheduling conflicts, it certainly won’t hurt her candidacy if she decides to reprise her role in the upcoming sequel.

Another highly anticipated movie is the live action version of the iconic characters from the Disney animated classic, Cats. Since the release of the original movie in 2019, social media has been abuzz with rumors regarding the casting and potential plot details for the much-anticipated sequel. On January 24th, Disney officially began teasing the upcoming cast and plot details for the film, setting the hearts of fans aflutter. The script, written by Brian Lynch and Jennifer Lee Carrell, is set for a June 10th, 2022 release. Actors like Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson have talked about playing some of the classic cat characters in a live action capacity and there are even rumors that some of the original voice cast could return for the movie.

J. Edgar

Another highly anticipated movie is J. Edgar, the story of the brilliant but obsessive FBI director who is determined to tame the American mafia. Since its original announcement in 2018, there have been several cast members and production details revealed about the film. The story is based on the 1961 novel, Lechery And Pride by Arthur Hailey and the film is currently in post-production. Edgar Hates Working With Children’s costume designer Maureen Hunter has created costumes for Michelle Pfeiffer, Emily Blunt, and Olivia Coleman and sets for the movie have been built on Santa Monica Pier. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Blunt said that she hopes her character “breaks some of the more typical gender stereotypes that we see in films.” With a release date scheduled for October 2nd, 2022, this looks to be one of the more surprising movies to hit theaters in a while.

Dollar Sign

Dollar Sign is a movie that has been on the radar screens of critics and audiences alike since its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival a few months ago, garnering positive reviews and becoming one of the festival’s highest-grossing premieres. In the movie, a down-on-his-luck handyman named Nick (Sterling K. Brown) befriends a rich socialite named Morgan (Rosanna Scott Thomas), who invites him to sit with her at a dinner party in order to help him gain some perspective on life. After talking about their mutual interests (including shoes and jewelry) and getting to know each other a little better, the two enter into a bargain: In exchange for helping her with her latest jewelry design, she will give him a job installing her jewelry collection. The movie is directed by Dan Lagana and is reportedly the first in a trilogy.

The Gold Coast

The Gold Coast is the fascinating story of an heiress (Caitlyn Lind) whose father (Christopher Plummer) suddenly leaves her an enormous fortune, which she must learn to navigate. Since the movie’s premiere at the Toronto Film Festival in September, it has won a number of awards and has drawn rave reviews, with audiences apparently feeling the same way, as early views indicate that it is a hit with theaters. The script was written by William Nicholson and Pete Holmes and is the first film for both directors, who previously worked together on the 2013 movie Red Sparrow. While a number of projects have been announced for 2021 and 2022, it would be a real shame if The Gold Coast is not released in theaters, especially since it looks like such a fun movie.

At this point, it’s clear that Hollywood’s most anticipated movies for 2022 are Black Widow, Cats, and J. Edgar, with The Gold Coast and Dollar Sign rounding out the top five. It will be interesting to see how accurate these predictions are and which one of these movies will become a major hit.
