FKA Twigs & Robert Pattinson’s duet feels like a real-life fair isle. One of the most iconic and beloved couples of 2017, Twigs and Pattinson met on the New Year’s Eve of 2016 and have been inseparable ever since. It was reported that Twigs proposed to Pattinson in front of a fire at their luxury Lake Como home, with an engagement ring bought at Harrods. The wedding took place at St Mary’s Church in Battersea, South London, in the presence of family and friends in April 2017. A source told E! News at the time, “It was emotional. They both cried a lot. This is what they both wanted and they made each other very happy.”
While the pair are undoubtedly blessed with an enviable marriage, it’s important to remember that they are still just as in love as they were the day they wed. Indeed, their devotion to each other is arguably greater than ever. It’s been a joy to witness their blossoming romance and the depth of their love for each other. And, as always, Twigs’ unique beauty and personality shine through on any occasion.
Whether dressing up as a bunny for Easter or rocking up in high heels for Comic-Con, Twigs always manages to steal the show. From her debut album, I’ll Never Let You Go, to her recent collaborations with H&M and Saint Laurent, to her stunning solo career, we look back on the many ways Twigs has blessed us with her presence over the past year.
Comfortably Numb
The year 2017 was undoubtedly a massive one for Twigs. Not only did she celebrate reaching a landmark 1 million Instagram followers, but she also released her second album, Comfortably Numb. Boasting 12 tracks in total, the record is distinguished by its delicate blend of R&B and electronic influences. The critically acclaimed project was largely produced by a diverse group of producers, including Hit-Boy, T-Minus, Vinylz, and Flume. The result is an album that’s both timeless and futuristic at the same time.
While the album doesn’t chart new musical territory for Twigs, it does provide a refined palate for existing fans. With guest appearances from some of the biggest names in music, from Jay-Z and Frank Ocean, to Travis Scott and Bjorn Borg, it’s safe to say that Twigs’ Comfortably Numb is definitely an album you’ll get to know, and love, very well.
A Year Of Firsts
It was a big year for Twigs, starting with her first-ever solo UK tour, followed by a run of UK festival appearances in the summer. And then, of course, there was the album release party and concert series that followed in the autumn. One of the most exciting aspects of Twigs’ solo career has been the way in which she’s managed to carve out a space for herself in the ever-changing music landscape. While she’s always been known for her work with other artists, such as her former band, THE GIRLS, and Sia, she’s never truly been able to stand alone as a solo artist.
She made her long-awaited solo debut with the album, I’ll Never Let You Go, released in October 2016. The album saw Twigs step out of the shadows and into the spotlight as a solo artist, and she silenced critics, claiming Album of the Year at the 2017 Grammys for this project.
In an interview with The New York Times, Twigs said of ILLNEARYOUGHTYOUGO: “I wanted to make something that was just a bit more mature, a bit more interesting. Not something that was just made to sound good on the radio. I wanted to make something that spoke to people more.”
And she certainly did just that. Produced almost entirely by herself, aside from a few songs co-produced with Mattman & Martins, the album boasted a roster of high profile, established artists, including Sia, Mark Ronson, and several members of One Little Indian.
The album kicked off with the pop anthem, Change, which landed Twigs her first ever UK number one. The song, which also features Sia, was featured in several high-profile films, including Quentin Tarantulin’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Paramount’s Ghost in the Shell. In addition, the song has been used in numerous adverts, including a Bud Light beer advert, and a M&M chocolate campaign, amongst others.
An Inspirational Woman
In a year stacked with incredible album releases, Twigs managed to make a lasting impression upon the music world with her second solo album, Comfortably Numb. Packing a potent mixture of electronic and R&B influences, the Grammy-nominated record is both timeless and futuristic, as futuristic, in fact, as you could possibly get. While it may not chart new musical territory for Twigs, it does provide a refined palate for existing fans. As well as guest appearances from some of the biggest names in music, from Jay-Z and Frank Ocean to Travis Scott and Bjorn Borg, the record is also filled with personal stories and lyrics that are as enlightening as they are moving. One of the most powerful messages of the record comes from the penultimate track, Don’t Forget About Me: “I won’t give up. I’m strong, I’m determined, I won’t give in,” she sings. “Even if everyone around me does, I’ll stand my ground.”
The song, written in collaboration with hit-makers Jeff Bhasker and Khalil Bell, is a rallying cry for those struggling with addiction or feeling lost. The video, directed by Marc Klasfeld, sees Twigs walking the streets of New York City, surrounded by a group of men and women who share her same plight. The women in the video are played by real-life drug addicts and recovering alcoholics. We see Twigs, surrounded by the women, as she sings: “I won’t give up. I’m strong, I’m determined, I won’t give in.” In the end, it’s clear that the only way forward for Twigs is by keeping her head high and fighting her way back to the top.
A Queen
In 2017, Twigs’ name was synonymous with beauty. The singer/songwriter/model was named British Female Solo Artist – Icon at this year’s Brit Awards and was also nominated for Female Artist and Album of the Year at the 2017 Grammy Awards. The year also saw the singer become the brand ambassador for both Kia and Victoria Beckham.
The year started with the announcement that Twigs would be the face of the new Kia Seltzer commercial. The “Seltzer” is a brand new model of the popular sportscar, which was revealed to the public at the 2017 New York Auto Show. The “Seltzer” is named after singer and songwriter, Seltzer. In the commercial, Twigs drives a black Seltzer with grey interior around a bend, before bringing it to a stop.
The singer also became Victoria Beckham’s newest global face, joining the fashion designer’s roster of high profile, international faces. The 37-year-old singer has been named the face of the Victoria Beckham fragrance, “Dare to Breathe”. The new fragrance will be available in both limited edition and regular versions.
