With the exception of a short break in January 2021, Robert Pattinson has been working non-stop since 2010. He started filming the new Twilight movie in October 2019 and has been working hard to make it as memorable as the first six installments of the Twilight franchise. However, before we get into details regarding the new film, let’s take a quick trip down memory lane to review some of the best films that feature Robert Pattinson.
Remember High School (2013)
After his breakout performances in the Harry Potter series, Robert Pattinson was eager to prove that he could carry a mature and nuanced filmography as an adult. Remember High School marked the beginning of a new era for Pattinson, as he played a college student who juggles his studies with his duties as the resident photographer for the school newspaper. While the movie was savaged by critics upon its release and only grossed $3.2 million worldwide, it established Pattinson as a leading man to watch out for.
Midnight in Paris (2015)
Following up on the heels of Remember High School, Midnight in Paris marked a significant step forward for Robert Pattinson. The year was 1922, and the young Englishman had traveled across Paris to meetamorphose in the 1920s. The movie turned out to be a romance set against the backdrop of one of the most glamorous cities in the world. Critics gushed over Pattinson’s performance and the movie went on to become one of the most successful films of all time, grossing a stunning $78.8 million worldwide. Many have cited it as one of the best films of the 21st century.
The Lost City of Z (2016)
While the above-mentioned films established Robert Pattinson as Hollywood’s leading man, it was Zygmunt Kapustka’s The Lost City of Z that truly broke him out of Hollywood’s shadow. The Polish production company that gave us such masterpieces as The Room and The Man Who Loves Chinais bringing their unique visual aesthetic to bear in this historical drama about the explorer Dr. John Hanning Speke. The movie details the perilous journey that Speke took to determine the source of the Nile River. While the movie received mixed reviews upon its initial release, it has since become one of the most beloved films among cinephiles. It recently became available on Blu-ray and DVD.
Sicario (2018)
Continuing our quest to spotlight Hollywood’s brightest new stars, let’s not forget about Joaquín Phoenix’s performance in Sicario. The film details the hunt for a serial killer named El Shafado, who turns out to be tied to Pablo Acosta’s (Eduardo Noriega) case. The movie is Netflix’s top-grossing Spanish-language film and was also selected for the 79th Annual Cannes Film Festival. Critics have hailed the performance, calling it one of the most compelling portrayals of a serial killer ever put on film. It’s worth noting that the script was originally written in Spanish, but Phoenix delivers a flawless English accent as he tells the story of a special agent who becomes entangled in a dangerous case.
When We Were Young (2019)
As previously mentioned, Pattinson has been working hard to make the new Twilight movie an all-time classic. When We Were Young is the first of two upcoming Twilight movies that Pattinson will star in (the other one being Twilight 8). The movie is set in the 1960s and follows Mason Turner (Pattinson), the younger brother of Alice (Kristen Stewart). The brooding actor plays a rising pop star who juggles his career with his familial responsibilities. While the movie received mixed reviews at the time of its release, it has since become a firm favorite among Twilight fans. It was also recently approved for home media release in the US, allowing us to look forward to watching it again.
Beautiful Thing (2020)
The final film on our list is also from director John Wick. The sequel to the 2019 hit John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum stars Ian McShane and Maika Monroe. The story picks up three years after the events of the first film, as the now-venerable Mr. McShane’s (McShane) gang is back, and this time they’re bringing their unique brand of violence to Mexico. The action-adventure movie also stars Tobey Macguire and Aksel Osment. While the first John Wick was an adaptation of the Chuck Palahniuk novel, Beautiful Thing is an original story by Palahniuk and David Martindale. The script was also co-written by Derek Haas and Steve Taylor, making Haas and Taylor the first screenwriters to adapt a Palahniuk story for the big screen.
With the exception of a short break in January 2021, Robert Pattinson will be busy promoting Twilight 8 as it hits theaters. He’ll also be working hard to make his next movie a best-seller and establish himself as Hollywood’s leading man.
