It’s been a while since the last Twilight movie came out, and since then, Robert Pattinson’s life has pretty much revolved around his acting career. The British actor has starred in a handful of films since breaking into the big screen in 2010, and many of them haven’t even come out yet! The latest project from the actor is Child of Nature, which hits theaters this week. The movie explores the complicated relationship between Pattinson and his two children with his wife, FKA Twigs. We take a look at some of the films that have fueled Pattinson’s career and lifestyle change since the twilight series ended.
Dangerous
Pattinson rose to fame playing the vampire Edward Cullen in the Twilight movies, but before the Twilight craze, he was already making a name for himself in indie films. One of Pattinson’s early gigs was a 2010 drama called Dangerous, which also featured Michael Shannon and Rosario Dawson. The film follows a man (Shannon) who goes on the run from the law after killing a man (Pattinson) for being in his girlfriend’s (Dawson) shadow. While not a huge box office success, the film won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Film in 2011. It also provided the actor with a platform to further showcase his talent and commitment to acting. The following year, Pattinson starred in Chris Eyre’s dark comedy The Zookeeper’s Wife, which was also nominated for an Independent Spirit Award. In 2018, he starred in and produced the indie horror movie The Farewell, which explores what happens when a family confronts their past and uncovers dark secrets. In the film, Pattinson plays a journalist who investigates the disappearance of a young boy and uncovers a decades-old mystery.
Bel Ami
One of the first movies to truly break out at the box office after the Twilight craze was Denis Villeneuve’s 2015 film, Arrival. The movie stars Jean-Marc Vallée as an alien from another planet who crash-lands near the Eiffel Tower and begins to make a living pretending to be a human. His fame begins to spread, and he becomes a target for humans and aliens alike who want to indulge in his company, especially since he’s such a good liar. The film took in $533 million worldwide, and it was one of the highest-grossing Canadian films of all time. It also helped put Villeneuve on the map, and made him a major contender for directing one of the future big-budget space epics.
Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 2
The final Twilight movie, Breaking Dawn — Part 2, was released in December 2016 and became the second highest-grossing installment in the series, taking in $632 million worldwide. The big-budget sequel picks up where the first movie left off, as Robert and Bella (Kristen Stewart) finally become parents and struggle with their new roles. The movie also stars Maisie Williams as a werewolf, Ashley Greene as a vampire, and Andy Serkis as a CGI werewolf. Also notable is the fact that it was the first time director Adam Shankman and editor William Goldenberg worked together on a Hollywood project. It was also the last installment of the Twilight series to be released in theaters, as midnight showings of the film were suspended a week before its premiere due to poor ticket sales.
Highly Strung
In October 2017, Netflix announced that they had picked up the rights to Charlize Theron’s film Highly Strung, with the streaming service ordering a season of the movie. The series is based on the 2014 memoir by the same name and tells the story of how Theron’s character, Celia, coped with the passing of her sister, Nina. Highly Strung is an emotional story, packed with heartache, but it’s definitely an entertaining look at how a high-powered woman handles tragedy. Netflix premiered the first season on February 20, 2018, and Theron has since become one of the biggest names in the industry, starring in a string of blockbusters, earning numerous awards, and creating memorable characters.
The King
In 2019, Netflix released a medieval-set drama called The King, starring Timothee Chalamet as a pretender to the throne who must fight to prove his legitimacy. The drama is based on the historic 18th century character King George III and originally aired on the streaming service in December. The series is part of Netflix’s expansive push into original programming and features an ensemble cast that includes Chalamet, Olivia Colman, Douglas Hodge, and Michael Caine. While not quite as acclaimed as Netflix’s other big-budget series, The Witcher (based on the novels by Andrzej Sapkowski), The King has managed to snag some pretty big names, with David Fincher attached to direct one of the first episodes and Rupert Sanders attached as producer. The Netflix drama airs on the streaming service in the UK and Ireland from January 8th to January 22nd, and in the U.S. on February 5th.
Mourning
Also in 2019, Netflix released the acclaimed murder mystery television series, Dark, which explores the murder of a young woman in present-day London. Starring Anna Friel as Camille, a forensic psychologist tasked with investigating the crime, the series is based on the 2006 novel of the same name by Val McDermid. Dark is the third-highest-rated original series on Netflix, just behind The Witcher and House of Gucci. The murder mystery revolves around a young designer named Tom whose assistant, Sadie, is kidnapped and held for ransom. When she is found murdered, Tom must overcome his grief and work with detective Kate Marsh to solve the case. Dark is currently streaming on Netflix.
Other Projects
The list of Robert Pattinson’s other projects goes on and on. In addition to appearing in many films, the actor has starred in several music videos. He also produced and co-starred in the 2016 indie drama, The Rover, and he will next be seen in the comedy-drama, The Midnight Demon. In the latter, he plays a fictionalized version of himself who is accidentally unleashed upon the world by scientists conducting illegal experiments. He then teams up with a team of scientists, monsters, and demons to save humanity. Finally, as we mentioned before, he has committed to acting in many big-budget movies, including Christopher Nolan’s upcoming Dark Waters, due out in April 2020. With so much to do, it’s no wonder that life hasn’t slowed down much for Pattinson since Twilight premiered in 2010. He still travels the world working and making appearances, and his schedule even looks like it’s about to take a sharp turn for the more intense as he starts production on Dark Waters in the near future.
