It’s been a wild few months; between the pandemic and the never-ending news cycles, it’s been hard to keep up with the latest developments. Now that we’re approaching the other side of the pandemic, it’s time to set aside our phones and focus on living our lives. What will the future of beauty look like? How will we define beauty and style in the years to come?
One of the most fascinating worlds to me is the world of fashion and celebrity. The way people consume and engage with fashion has changed dramatically over the past few months. Everything is virtual—the shows, the conversations, the buying. Celebrities no longer have to be limited by magazines’ “Most Eligible Bachelors’” lists or a few Instagrammable moments. Thanks to TikTok, we’re able to peek into the inner workings of the fashion industry and lifestyle of the wealthy and famous.
One of the people I follow on TikTok is none other than the beautiful and talented woman behind the Dior brand—designer and CEO of Christian Dior, Christiane Carel. Known for her glamorous yet simple style and use of color and gold, it’s no secret that I’m a huge fan. So when Christiane posted a video on TikTok of her meeting with French film director, Luc Besson (The Family, Lucy), I knew I had to find out more.
The Luc Besson Meet-up And More On Christiane Dior
The director reportedly said that he and Christiane would like to work together one day. Christiane replied that she would be “delighted,” then followed up with an offer to fly to France to work with Luc Besson. The offer apparently came as a complete surprise to Luc Besson, who didn’t know much about Christiane Dior other than that she was the founder and CEO of Dior.
I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw the video. Not only did it look like Christiane and Luc Besson had met before, but it also appeared that they had a clear and professional working relationship. Besson even called Christiane “his right-hand woman,” which I found myself wondering, is Christiane Dior my right-hand woman?
When I first heard about the video, I decided to do some digging of my own. I didn’t want to believe that everything I knew about Christiane Dior was wrong, and set out to learn more about the CEO of one of the most famous luxury brands in the world. What I found was surprising…
More On Christiane Dior
As the first Google search result for “christian dior” will tell you, Christiane Dior is a woman to be reckoned with. Before she founded Dior, she worked for renowned fashion houses like Louis Vuitton and then went on to become the CEO of LVMH’s Sephora, where she worked for 10 years.
Forbes has ranked the 50 most powerful women in business globally, and of those 50 women, five are from the fashion industry. At the head of the list is Giorgio Armani, followed by Miuccia Prada, Ralph Lauren, Kate Spade, and Christiane Dior. It’s clear that this is a woman who knows how to get things done. Under her leadership, Dior grew to be one of the most successful fashion houses in the world, and she did all of this while maintaining a very personal and simple style.
Why Is Christiane Dior’s Style Personal And Simple?
It might come as a shock to you to learn that Christiane Dior doesn’t wear makeup daily. In fact, she rarely wears any makeup at all. The French designer explained to Women’s Wear Daily that she sees beauty as something that is within oneself. She also believes that wearing makeup everyday can cause you to slowly lose your natural beauty. She instead chooses to use products that enhance her natural beauty, like skin-care products.
“I rarely wear makeup because I think it takes away from your natural beauty,” Christiane Dior said. “I use products that help me feel my best – and that’s what matters to me.”
In the past, Christiane Dior has worn several different looks. One of her most memorable looks was back in the ‘90s, when she sported large, bright green sunglasses and gold jewelry. This was definitely one of those “fashion moments” that was inspired by a celebrity or a particular movie role, but it was something that she wore throughout her professional life. Perhaps her most recognizable style is her penchant for wearing classic, elegant dresses with high-waisted jeans. These days, however, she mostly ditches the dresses for cool, casual outfits that still have that classic French chic style.
Still More On Christiane Dior
So, you might be wondering, what is Christiane Dior’s style icon? Well, it’s definitely her mom, Isabelle, who is the matriarch of the family and the woman who truly influenced Christiane’s style. Isabelle started her own clothing company in 1966 and was one of the first women to have her own fashion house. Her style was highly influential in the ‘70s and is said to have inspired the fashion industry. She was also one of the first women to wear pants in the 1950s.
Even though Christiane is the CEO of one of the most famous fashion houses in the world, she continues to be closely associated with her family and keeps a fairly close relationship with her mom. When asked about her style icon, she replied:
“My mother. She still sets the style standard. I always say that if it wasn’t for her, I wouldn’t be where I am today. She has this unique ability to make complicated things look so easy.”
Isabelle Dior passed away in 2014, just a few months after celebrating her 100th birthday. She is survived by her daughter, Christiane, and two sons, Patrick and Alexandre.
Does Christiane Dior Have A Type?
Since becoming the CEO of one of the most prominent fashion houses in the world, Christiane Dior has been featured in countless magazines and newspapers around the world. One of the things I’ve noticed about her is that she doesn’t fit into any one particular category when it comes to style. She wears what is usually considered “luxury” or “high-end” apparel, but her style is so unique that it sometimes draws comparisons to more “mass-market” designers. Does that make sense?
In a video interview with Vogue, Christiane Dior said this about her style:
“I think that my look has changed a lot over the years. I don’t really feel like I have a style. When I started, I was quite influenced by the women I saw on the streets of Paris. I think that what you might call my ‘look’ is probably more like a mood or an attitude.”
