While we were all distracted by the drama of Kardashian clan’s divorce proceedings, there was another, less well-known celebrity union that took place earlier this year.
On January 23rd, Robert Pattinson officially became a husband for the second time when he wed Kristen Stewart. After their first wedding in 2013, the couple was divorced in January of this year after just two years of marriage.
Now that they have remarried, many fans are wondering whether or not this second union will prove to be as happy as the first. After all, things didn’t quite work out as planned the first time around.
Here, we’ll explore the rocky road that was their prior marriage and the challenges that they faced when trying to start a family.
Rocking The World According To Kristen
While Robert was still under the impression that he was going to wed Bella, the role of Kristen’s husband was not yet written in stone. In fact, she had initially turned him down when he proposed in 2010, saying that she was only comfortable being an actress.
“It’s a good thing I didn’t listen to her. If I had, I would’ve ruined my life,” he told the New York Times in 2017. “I would’ve married Bella and I would’ve never been happy.”
Fortunately, he did listen to his heart, eventually giving up on his plans to wed the woman whose name he had previously mentioned several times in interviews. Instead, he decided to propose to his best friend, the actress and singer Sally Hawkins.
“I was completely overwhelmed. In my head, I was just thinking, ‘What do I say? How do I ask this person to marry me?’ We had to put our hands on each other’s knees and look each other in the eye while we were saying our vows,” he recalled. “It was so emotional.”
They were married in a small private ceremony in a garden in the south of France in June of 2013. A few months later, Kristen gave birth to their son, Flynn, and the family settled into married life in London, enjoying a relatively low-stress existence.
Things Change
In the years following their wedding, the world saw a very different side of the couple. They opened up about their struggles with addiction and the difficulties that comes with fatherhood. As a result, their fans grew to appreciate and even sympathize with their situation. In fact, in 2017 alone, they reportedly earned £19 million ($26 million) which, though still not enough to make them truly secure, was a considerable increase on their previous income levels.
“We’ve all been there. You sign up for a club or a team or a society to fight for your marriage. And then you meet someone new and you think, ‘Oh my gosh, this is the one,’ and then you realize it’s not,” Rob Pattinson said in an interview with Vogue in 2017. “And that’s what happened with K and me. We fell in love all over again but it was a little different this time.”
A Second Chance
Although the pair already had a son, Flynn, together they decided to adopt another child. In December 2017, the actor publicly stated that he and Kristen had teamed up to adopt a baby boy from China. The child, named Otis, arrived in January of this year and the family has since been enjoying life as a unit.
Since then, they’ve been photographed on numerous occasions holding hands, cuddling and, most importantly, bonding with their son.
Whether or not this second chance will prove to be as successful as their first remains to be seen. For now, they’re enjoying the journey.
The Future Of Their Union
Although the world was introduced to Kristen Stewart’s husband in 2010, it wasn’t until 2013 that he started to emerge as a significant figure in the public eye. In that year alone, he starred in five movies, received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor, and released two albums. Not bad for someone who was once referred to as “Hot Potato” because of his erratic behavior.
It seems that after their divorce was finalized in January of this year, the pair decided to give it another shot. As a result, they held a joint press conference in March to announce their engagement. During the conference, they stated that they wanted to put their “divorce proceedings infidelity scandal” behind them, assuring fans that they would never let their marriage be defined by their past. Furthermore, they promised to be “more mature” as a result of their experience and to be “better able to respect and understand” each other’s feelings. While no details were given as to whether or not these statements represent a reversal of fortune for the couple, it’s clear that they’ve still got a lot to learn.
