In the year 2022, few celebrity couples are going to capture the world’s imagination like Robert Pattinson and his wife, Clémence Poésy. The British actor and his Parisian wife have welcomed three children into the world, and with each new addition, the pair’s celebrity has only increased.
Pattinson, 46, first made headlines in 2021 when he split from his wife of 15 years, Eve, with whom he has three children. His choice of partner was soon followed by the spotlight, and several months later he was spotted at a Pride parade in London walking hand-in-hand with his partner. The pair were later photographed kissing passionately at an undisclosed location, but despite speculation, no wedding proposal was made.
In May 2021, Pattinson confirmed he and Clémence had married, but kept quiet regarding the nature of their union. Clémence did not immediately deny the reports, but later that month, the couple made their relationship public through a joint interview with Marie Claire
The interview saw the actress-turned-wife speak about her husband, from their wedding day to his children, Rupert, 12, Bella, 10, and 4-year-old Ruby. The interview also covered Clémence’s fashion choices and how she helps her husband raise his fame. “I always try to be a little more feminine, a little more luxurious, a little more precious. Sometimes he needs a little help in the dressing department,” she said.
Shortly after the interview was published, Page Six reported that Clémence had indeed helped Pattinson dress for the camera, which she later confirmed in a tweet.
The newlyweds have since kept a low profile. In September 2021, they were again photographed together, this time at an undisclosed location in London. Several days later, they were spotted in Paris, and on their wedding day, November 21, 2021, the pair exchanged vows at a hotel in the French capital. Their union was covered by all of Paris’ major newspapers, and a video recording of the wedding was published on social media platforms.
Pattinson wore a black suit with a white shirt and a tie decorated with pink and purple flowers, while Clémence wore a white dress with a blue sash. The church wedding was followed by a reception at Le Palace Hotel.
A Private Family Affair
In 2019, the actor’s personal life had taken a backseat to his work. After a difficult series of years that began in 2012, when he had to serve a year-long prison sentence for causing an accident that resulted in a fatal traffic collision, Pattinson had quietly been rebuilding his life. The conviction had resulted in part from his alleged involvement with another driver who had fatally collided with a cyclist. While in prison, he had reportedly devoted himself to reading. In one of the rare interviews he had given while in London’s Pentonville Prison in 2018, the actor had spoken about his experience of reading Alice in Wonderland and How to Train Your Dragon – two of his favourite children’s books – while behind bars. He had also revealed that he had written a letter to Rupert, his 12-year-old son from a previous relationship, and that he had dedicated the missive to his new son, Ruby. “It’s a letter I’ve been wanting to write for a long time. I thought I’d better wait until I got out. It’s a letter to my new son, Ruby,” Pattinson had said.
Pattinson’s children had been at the forefront of his mind since his first marriage collapsed in 2012. His decision to part ways with the children’s mother, Eve, had been made with the support of his family and friends. Eve, 42, accused Pattinson of emotional abuse during their trial in 2018, which he vehemently denied. The case took a heavy toll on his personal life, as he was forced to give up his children to foster care for several months while he served his sentence. “It’s been hard. Harder than I thought it would be,” Pattinson had told The New York Times in an interview prior to the publication of the newspaper’s annual style section, the Page Six Clotheshorse. “I wouldn’t wish it on anybody. But I’m grateful to be out, and I’m grateful to be a father.”
Now, with his three children living with him and his wife in Twickenham, London, and his children’s mother awarded custody, Pattinson is finally able to be with his family as a father should. “It’s a very unique and special moment for me,” he told The New York Times Magazine in July 2020. “I get to enjoy this time with my kids, and it feels like I’ve earned it.”
The Children’s Corner
In the year since his prison sentence, Pattinson has focused on becoming a better father and husband. “I’m really proud of what I’ve achieved. It wasn’t easy,” he told The Guardian in March 2020. “I’m glad that I went through this because I know I can be a better person and I know I can be a better father.”
In line with this personal reformation, Pattinson has turned his attention to his children as a way of inspiring them to be better citizens. In April 2020, he launched a YouTube channel, The Children’s Corner, which he describes as a “safe space for young minds”. The channel features original short videos aimed at inspiring and educating young people around the world. “The most important thing to me is the content,” Pattinson said in a statement. “I want to make sure that the people who watch my channel have fun, but also learn something new.”
Among the projects The Children’s Corner will explore are animal welfare and the environment. “There aren’t many channels out there that are focused on these topics, let alone celebrities,” the channel’s co-founder, Michael Jones, said. “But it’s important to us that these issues are covered, and we want to make sure our audience can understand them. It’s not a brand or an obsession – it’s about raising awareness.”
A Bigger Family
Pattinson is not the only celebrity to have recently married a woman almost six years his junior. In 2022, it was Lady Gaga’s turn to shock the world when she wed music producer, 33, Joichi Mikage. They kept their wedding a secret for several months before making it known through a guest appearance at a fashion event in Germany and a series of private Instagram posts.
Like Pattinson, the couple married in Paris and used the city as the backdrop for their celebration. Lady Gaga wore a white dress with a red rose, while Mikage was elegantly suited in a black suit. The couple’s children, Vivian, 12, and Christian, 11, were bridesmaids at the ceremony. Following the wedding, the family, which includes Mikage’s two sons from a previous relationship, continued their celebration in Germany’s capital. Later that month, a photograph of the family appeared on social media, confirming their amicable split. Since their surprise wedding, the couple have continued to remain fairly private, with the exception of a joint interview with Uma magazine.
While Gaga has primarily focused on motherhood since giving birth to the couple’s daughter in 2019, the singer has also made headlines for her fashion choices. Following the release of her long-awaited music video for ‘Million Reasons’, in which she sported white outfits, the singer revealed that she would like to continue wearing “light and happy” clothing. “I’m so happy to be doing what I love while also being able to provide for my family. When I’m not on the set or with my family, I like to wear light and happy clothing because it makes me feel like a ray of sunshine,” Gaga told i-D magazine. “I want to keep that feeling all year long.”
A Brighter Future
The world’s most famous ‘bachelor’ turned fifty this year, and while many expected the birthday to mark the end of his romance with CoCo Cotton, the actress is determined to prove them wrong. In June 2022, the actress confirmed she was dating again, though she did not name the man with whom she was infatuated. In a series of captivating Instagram posts, Cotton, 47, showed off her growing baby bump with the hashtag #DateAt50. “Happy birthday to me!” she wrote alongside a photograph of herself in a bikini. “I’ve had such an amazing year and feel so blessed to have found love again. I want to make sure I keep my husband and family close to my heart for the rest of my life. Love you all!”
