While we’re on the topic of actors playing fictional characters, let’s discuss the ever-controversial topic of Robert Pattinson playing the piano. For those of you who don’t know, Robert Pattinson is a famous English actor who rose to fame playing the character of Edward Cullen in the Twilight movies. The series became one of the most beloved movie franchises of all time. Since then, Pattinson has acted in a variety of movies and TV shows. In general, he tends to play quirky, eccentric characters that the average Joe Moviegoer can relate to (think: eccentric best friend, eccentric coworker, etc.).

As the title asks, can Robert Pattinson actually play the piano? Let’s take a look. For those of you who are more into classical music, you’ll be pleased to know that he does play the piano quite well (though not perfectly). In fact, according to his IMDb page, he’s played the piano onscreen in nine movies and TV shows. In a 2011 interview with Elle, Pattinson revealed that his love for classical music stems from his desire to play the piano as a child:

“I’ve always wanted to play the piano since I was a little girl. My parents had a piano in the house, and I would watch them play and try to copy what they did. It’s the one thing I actually learned how to do properly. Now that I’m an adult, I get to play the piano for fun…It’s exciting when it’s something you’ve always wanted to do as a child and can finally make it happen.”

If you take a look at some of his movies, you’ll see that he doesn’t simply play the piano. He practices frequently and plays with passion. In fact, it’s quite obvious that he’s actually enjoying himself while playing. To give you an idea of just how good he is, here are five videos you can check out:

Five Video Clips Of Robert Pattinson Playing The Piano

The first video is from the 2010 comedy-drama, Moving Day. In this clip, you’ll see Pattinson playing the piano (not for long, however) while one of his characters, Roy, chats with Emily. This is a short scene in which they discuss Roy’s new house and its various quirks. Notice how his hands are completely relaxed as he plays. This suggests that he has played the piano for a while and is quite experienced at it. Take a look:

Four Video Clips Of Robert Pattinson Singing

The following clips are from the 2011 movie, Water for Elephants. In the first clip, we see Pattinson playing the piano with passion while singing along with his character, Jacob, in the rain. This is a beautiful, simple yet effective scene in which Jacob expresses his sadness over his failed marriage. Notice how he plays with both hands and how his body language changes while he’s singing. This is a great example of how playing the piano can bring a character’s emotional story to life:

Three Video Clips Of Robert Pattinson Dancing

In the 2012 film, Promised Land, we see Pattinson playing the piano while dancing with his co-star, Joel Edgerton. This is a very funny scene in which they argue over whether or not a farmer can be a successful psychologist. Anyway, this is another example of how playing the piano can be the epitome of cool. Plus, it’s great to see one of Hollywood’s hottest actors actually getting some exercise! Take a look:

Two Video Clips Of Robert Pattinson Playing The Barrio Rhythm

The next two clips are from the 2014 film, The Lost City. In the first, we see Pattinson playing the piano and singing with excitement. He lives in a beautiful, old house with his wife, Kate Winslet, and their two children, Mia and Alexander. When Kate arrives home from work, she finds him playing the piano and immediately joins in. So, here we have a real-life “Wedding Crashers.” It’s beautiful to see them both enjoying themselves so much while playing together. You’ll also notice that he plays with both hands in these clips. This suggests that he has extensive classical music training. Finally, this is one of Kate Winslet’s best performances. She’s absolutely amazing here and makes the scene completely work. One Video Clip Of Robert Pattinson Playing The Blues

The last clip is from the 2015 film, The Guest. In this scene, we see Pattinson playing the blues while wearing an Indian headdress. This is for a very funny reason. For those of you who don’t know, black blues are commonly associated with the KKK. So, apparently, Pattinson decided to play the blues as a commentary on racism. Either way, it’s a cool scene and definitely worth a look. Take a look:
