With the new Batman series on the horizon, fans of the caped crusader are wondering, who is Robert Pattinson going to play?

The 29-year-old actor, who recently starred in the hugely successful Twilight franchise, is being touted as the next big thing, and not without good reason. Not only has he managed to captivate audiences with his acting chops, but he’s also managed to charm the ladies with his good looks.

So, will Pattinson be taking on the role of Batman, or is he too busy chasing after Kristen Stewart and co? Let’s take a look.

Pattinson’s Resume

Pattinson started acting at the age of four, and has since gone on to star in blockbusters such as Good Will Hunting, Elizabeth, and most recently, Twilight.

The actor has been steadily climbing the Hollywood ranks, and in 2014 will be seen in the hugely anticipated sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy, featuring the original cast and director, James Gunn.

The Making Of A Modern-Day Classic

With a resume like that, it’s no surprise that Hollywood is once again turning to Pattinson to play a key role in an upcoming film adaptation of one of their classic stories.

Last year, it was announced that Warner Brothers were in the process of developing a new Batman series, with Pattinson reportedly being one of the leading contenders for the iconic role of Batman.

Based on the popular graphic novel series, Dark Knight, the film will once again be adapted for the big screen and will follow the events of billionaire Bruce Wayne’s last journey. Warner Brothers are yet to set a release date for the as-yet-untitled film adaptation, but it’s expected that Pattinson’s participation will be announced soon.

Pattinson’s Personality

We don’t know much about Pattinson’s personal life, but it would appear that he’s comfortable in his own company. The actor has very few current pictures publicly available from his Instagram, with most of his feed dedicated to behind-the-scenes shots from the sets of his movies.

There are some pictures from the set of Midnight in Paris, showing Pattinson having fun with co-star Owen Wilson, but for the most part it’s very reserved. However, this didn’t stop fans from speculating about the couple’s future, with many believing that they are an item. When Wilson was asked about the rumors last year, he replied: “I’m not going to comment on that … I mean, listen, you’re a celebrity, you’re in the spotlight, you’re on camera almost all of the time. I have a job, I have kids, I have a family. You want to keep things simple … I don’t want to complicate my life … I have a wife … We’re just being simple … A good friend of mine says [in an] interview [that] I’ll never have [a] serious relationship [because] I’ll never feel safe [with] anyone [as] long as Robert Pattinson is in the picture.”

The Biggest Competition

It’s no secret that Batman is one of the most popular and iconic characters in pop culture, and it’s created quite the buzz around Pattinson’s potential to don the caped crusader’s garb. But, it’s not just Batman that Pattinson will have to fight for the role. He will be joined by an impressive list of contenders, including Christian Bale, who starred in the first two Batman films and is again poised to reprise the role for the much anticipated sequel, Batman Vs. Superman.

Not only is Bale arguably the biggest name in the competition, but he’s also one of the most popular actors of all time. The Dark Knight star has played a key role in every major movie release in the last decade, and his status as one of the most recognizable faces in Hollywood is unquestioned. He also famously turned down the part of Batman three times before finally accepting it.

Other potential contenders include Tom Hardy and Mark Ruffalo, who starred in the 2006 movie, The Dark Knight, and will reprise their roles for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming Batman Vs. Superman.

But, if Bale’s name isn’t on the list of contenders for Batman, it’s probably because he doesn’t want to share the spotlight with another actor. The Dark Knight Rises star, Anne Hathaway, could become the next big thing, thanks to her recent string of critically and commercially successful movies, including the recent The Bride of Frankenstein, in which she starred alongside Ben Foster and Boris Kodjemon. Her status as a possible successor to the batgirl led some fans to speculate that she and Pattinson could be an item. However, despite rumors to the contrary, it’s a safe assumption to say that Hathaway doesn’t have her eye on the limelight, as she’s already indicated that she’s focused on her career.

Watching His Steps

One of the most amazing things about Pattinson is that he seems to be able to seamlessly transition from the spotlight to the background, with very little in-between. The only ones still able to grab his attention are those closest to him, as evidenced by the fact that he deleted former co-star and close friend, Elizabeth Taylor, from his Instagram account, after she put out a cryptic status update, writing: “We used to be very close. Now we’re just acquaintances.”

Other celebrities have been known to comment on Pattinson’s apparent inability to maintain friendships, with Gwyneth Paltrow once observing: “He’s very much alone, as you know. He keeps his circle small, and I think that’s what makes him interesting.”

What Do You Think?

As we await the announcement of which actor will be playing Batman, it’s fun to speculate on who else might be in the running. With so many talented actors out there, it will be interesting to see which one emerges victorious.

Who do you think will play Batman? Or, more importantly, who do you think is the rightful heir to the Caped Crusader’s cape and cowl?
