After months of delays and cast changes, Warner Bros.’ The Batman is finally almost here. The final trailer for the highly anticipated superhero flick dropped on Wednesday night, and it featured not one, but two of our favorite actors: Robert Pattinson and Ben Affleck. We’ve got the details on what the trailer had in store for us.
The Trailer Is Dark, but Has a Few Moments of Hilarity
The trailer opens darkly, with ominous music and images of nighttime streets. We see a shadowy figure with a glowing red mouth moving through the shadows, and it takes us a couple of moments to realize that it’s actually Robert Pattinson in full costume as The Batman. The scene is reminiscent of the teaser trailer that dropped a few months back, but this latest look promises a darker, more adult storyline. This isn’t your typical superhero movie, as Warner Bros. is billing it as a “noir-ish thriller.” It’s a pretty apt description.
If you’ve been following the Batman rumor mill, you might notice that there’s been a lot of talk about Ben Affleck not fitting into the movie. Though he’s playing a role in the film, Tony Stark’s former assistant, he reportedly doesn’t want to take over for Bale as the Dark Knight. However, it seems like Affleck is taking the opportunity to shine in what will undoubtedly be his break-out role.
One of the more amusing scenes in the trailer involves an over-eager fan trying to get a peek at Kristen Stewart as Katarina, Alfred’s granddaughter. You’ll have to watch the trailer to see what happens (and it just so happens to be the scene where Stewart’s character is least covered up), but the young fan is persistent, and just when you think he’s going to give up, he manages to get a glimpse of her bra and panties.
The trailer is packed with intense action scenes and plenty of on-screen violence. It teases us with a glimpse of both Robin and Azrael, the two heroes who are set to appear in the movie along with Batman. We also get a look at the Batsuit, which is being touted as the most powerful and flexible suit of armor yet.
The Music Is Awesome, and You’ll Want to Dance
When it comes to movie music, there are very few teams as strong as Hans Zimmer and his talented band, the London Symphony Orchestra. Their music is present throughout the trailer, and it consistently provides a heavy atmosphere for the action scenes. While some may argue that the trailer doesn’t give us too much, it’s still jam-packed with high-quality music.
The trailer closes with a haunting rendition of “Happy Days” by the Scottish band, The Fratellis, which also appears in the film. You can practically feel the drama and tension rising as the band’s somber lyrics come to life:
“Now that we’ve gotten the gruesome stuff out of the way, it’s time for some laughs. All the funny things we’ve never got a chance to tell each other over the years. So here’s to the crazy nights, the dumb jokes, and the crazy laughs. Because we’ve got a lot of living to do.”
Hopefully, this trailer will convince you that The Batman is worth seeing in theaters. It’s been a long time coming, but now that the wait is over, it’s time to celebrate. In addition to being one of the most anticipated superhero films of the year, it’s going to be great to see Bale’s final performance as The Dark Knight.
