The New Batman V Superman movie is out! And with it, we’ve been treated to multiple new looks at characters we know and love. From tiny Aquaman to a more traditional Superman, eagle-eyed fans may have spotted a familiar face or two.

Perhaps the most surprising inclusion is that of Jason Matheson’s Robin. Fans of the Batman TV shows may remember him as Dick Robin, the sidekick of Ralph Fiennes’ Batman. Now, he’s a vital part of the team that’ll fight crime alongside Ben Affleck’s Dark Knight and Henry Czuwinski’s Man of Steel.

But did they actually cast Jason Matheson’s Robin in the movie? Or has the actor simply appeared in a cameo? Let’s take a closer look at the evidence and find out what we know about Robin in the New Batman V Superman Movie.

Who Is Robin in the New Batman V Superman Movie?

One of the most recognizable faces in the DC Extended Universe is that of Jason Matheson’s Robin. The actor has worn the iconic red and green costume since the 1960s, first appearing in the Adam #66 TV show in a dual role as Batman and Robin. Since then, he has been a constant fixture in the large-scale media adaptation of the characters.

In 2019 alone, we’ve seen him reprise his role as Robin in the TV show Gotham and in the movies Detective Somerset Returns and The Robin Movie. But what role will he play in the upcoming movie Batman V Superman?

There are a few clues that bear pointing out. For one, we know that in the comics, Dick Robin was originally created as a love interest for Batman’s sidekick. He was initially inspired by the character of Kato from the manga version of Batman, Dick Tracey. When the comics character first appeared in the late 1940s, he was known as Dick Robin until taking on his traditional surname at some point in the early 1950s.

As noted earlier, the 2017 Suicide Squad movie featured a younger version of Robin. The actor who portrayed him, Miles Teller, also starred in this year’s The Nebraska and last year’s The Birds. So it would be no wonder if this upcoming Robin was related to those characters. In fact, his name may even stand for Teller, with the first character, B, standing for Ben (Affleck). Perhaps the best supporting evidence that Robin is in the new Batman V Superman movie is the fact that there is no Robbin in the credits. So, let’s look at the evidence, piece by piece, and find out what we know about Robin, so far.

New Batman & Robin Costumes

It’s hard to talk about Robin without bringing up his iconic outfit. The character’s design has been frequently updated over the years, but the basic look remains the same. We’ve already seen a preview of the new Robin costume in the teaser trailer, so let’s take a quick look at how it compares to other iterations of the character.

The best way to compare the new Robin costume to other characters’ is to use a chart. For ease of comparison, let’s place each character next to the corresponding character’s outfit in the 2017 Suicide Squad movie. We’ll then compare the other costumes from there. So, let’s get started.

For Batman, we’ll use his iconic Aquaman costume from Suicide Squad and his Black Birds costume for The Dark Knight. As seen above, they are very similar. The main difference between the two is the color scheme. While the suit in The Dark Knight is mostly black, the suit in Suicide Squad is more yellow. Also, the Suicide Squad Batman is more streamlined in design.

For Superman, we’ll use his standard Man of Steel costume. And for Captain America, we’ll use an iconic Winter Captain America costume. Finally, for Hulk, we’ll use his Ironman marvel suit. Now, we’ll vary the color scheme a bit to make things easier to spot. So let’s take a look.

New Batman V Superman Trailer

If you’ve been living under a rock over the last few months, you may not know that a trailer for The New Batman V Superman movie dropped a few days before Christmas. So, let’s take a quick look at what we know about this eagerly awaited movie so far. This trailer opens with a shot of Ben Affleck’s Batman and Henry Czuwinski’s Man of Steel fighting alongside each other. Then, we see an aerial shot of the Golden State War Memorial in Gotham. As the music swells, we hear Hans Zimmer’s iconic “Duel of the Fates” motif from the 2012 The Hulk movie. Finally, we see Wonder Woman fly into battle alongside Batman and Superman.

From the looks of the trailer, it is clear that The New Batman V Superman will focus on the early days of Superman’s career as a costumed superhero. Early in the trailer, we see a young Clark Kent wearing his iconic S logo on his chest (with S gone over K in red on the front). Afterward, he dons a more traditional United Nations of America S shield. (It is interesting to note that during Superman’s early days, his primary uniform was not red and gold, but black and green.)

A few other tidbits of information can be found in the trailer. For one, it appears that LexCorp has changed hands multiple times since its founding in 1899. (It appears to be operating more like a H corporation than an L corporation at this point.) Also, the company now has a Kryptonite defense system, and we see several guards with blasters and particle cannons. Finally, one more piece of evidence that Robin is in the new Batman V Superman movie is the fact that there is a Robin on the cover. So, let’s move on to the next topic.

More Teaser Trailers

While The New Batman V Superman trailer was fun to look at, it was only a teaser. A few days later, we were treated to two more teaser trailers for the film. The first looks at Aquaman fighting off an Orca, while the latter shows us a glimpse of Black Birds flying over New York City. Finally, one more teaser trailer was released last week, giving us a glimpse of Joker. And while we wait for The New Batman V Superman to hit theaters, these teaser trailers will keep us occupied. (We also get a glimpse of Scarecrow in the Aquaman teaser, which is always a pleasant surprise.)

So far, we know pretty much everything about The New Batman V Superman movie. Although we’ve only seen a few brief glimpses of Jason Matheson’s Robin in the trailer, we’ve managed to piece together his character arc. (Based on the comics, we know that Alfred Pennyworth trains and mentors young Robin. In the movie, he appears to do the same with our favorite sidekick.) But one area that remains a mystery is the villain. While we have seen glimpses of the Mad Hatter in the trailer, the true identity of the New Batman V Superman villain is still unknown. With so much speculation swirling around, it will be exciting to see who the film’s villain is when it is finally revealed.

Regardless, The New Batman V Superman still looks like it will be an entertaining film. It seems the Suicide Squad movie was nearly a direct prequel to The New Batman V Superman movie. So, although it will be exciting to finally learn the villain’s identity, for now we will have to make do with the speculation.
