This isn’t the usual Harry Potter Hogwarts battle where you have the good guys versus the bad guys. This is the Dark Knight versus the Dark Knight.
It’s been almost a year since the last film in the Batman series, The Dark Knight Rises, but Christian Bale and director Christopher Nolan aren’t letting go of the Batman brand. Now that Warner Bros. owns all the Batman movies, they have the chance to continue telling stories about the Caped Crusader and his villains. The studio announced today that they have a new film lined up that will see Batman take on multiple other Batmen. The film will be directed by Bale and will star Armie Hammer, Jackie Earle Haley, Zachary Quinto, and Harvey Keitel.
Hammer plays the role of the son of a Gotham businessman who decides to take up the mask and become Gotham’s next great detective. It’s unclear if the film will tell the same story as the comic book series of the same name or go its own way, but the script is being written by Jon Watts, whose previous screenwriting credits include Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron and Warner Bros.’s Suicide Squad.
Franchise Or One-and-Done?
The Dark Knight is one of the most recognizable characters in pop culture. While many comic book fans may not know the full extent of his adventures, they know exactly what he looks like and are more than happy to shout out his famous catchphrase: “To be continued…”
Hiring Christian Bale as the star of the movie was a no-brainer for Warner Bros. He’s the living embodiment of the character. The studio is banking on the fact that most people have already seen the Dark Knight and know what he looks like. This is something that a lot of the other actors in the cast will have to work hard to make sure the audience doesn’t recognize them as the Caped Crusader.
It’s great to see the Batman franchise still going strong after all this time. It proves that there’s still demand for these stories. Even if this new film doesn’t live up to fans’ expectations, it’s unlikely that they’ll stop showing up to the theaters.
The question is, will this be the last we see of Christian Bale as Batman or will we see the character in the next generation?
More Than Meets The Eye
The Dark Knight isn’t the only Batman-related news this week. The Caped Crusader will also be appearing in the animated adaptation of All-New Batman this year. The film will be released on June 19th, 2019 and will serve as a sort of sequel to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice where Batman teams up with the Justice League to fight the Mad Hatter and his minions.
Not a lot is known about this project, but it’s great to see the Batman brand being represented in other media. It shows that the character isn’t going anywhere and is still having plenty of adventures beyond the big-budget blockbuster movies.
An Actor’s Actor?
While Christian Bale is undoubtedly better known as an actor than as Batman, he’s not the only one who can play the Dark Knight. Actor Kevin Nolan, the grandson of the directing cohort of the same name, has been featured in small parts in several Batman movies.
In the upcoming film, The Batman, Nolan will play a young Robert Bruce, who goes on to become Batman. It would seem that the family connection is paying off as well as the training and the beard.
Nolan is well-known for his portrayal of young Bruce in The Prestige. He also starred in the upcoming WWII drama, Overlord. It’s unclear how involved Christian Bale will be in the upcoming film, but it would seem that his connections to the Batman franchise won’t end with this new project.
Christopher Nolan has been one of the most influential directors in modern cinema. The Dark Knight opens tomorrow in theaters across the country. Let us know what you think about Christian Bale as Batman in the comments below.
